£708 stolen from my Unibet account

Something similar happened to a friend with another bookie.  Someone hacked into his account and lost the balance deliberately at poker to the hacker.  He requested all the data on his account under GDPR and it showed the IP where the money transfer was done.  He put the IP into a tracker and it was right by someone at the bookies Head Office, so it was an inside job and he got his money back eventually after 6 months

The GDPR  may also require them to give the bank details.

'Tyrannitar', I hope you get your money back with a sincere apology. It's despicable how one's money can go missing willy-nilly.

As such, rule no 1: Never trust bookies. Even their reps on air speak with forked-tongues. And, those behind the keyboard in plush buildings/offices are a law unto themselves.

It never happens that people give their log in details to someone else, lose the money and then claim it wasn't them.

After being at this for 20 years I still get to be shocked by the treatment of customers by bookies. I have had the full spectrum of **** customer services over the years but, fair play, Unibet have stolen the show here.

I had notified them as soon as I saw the email saying that "Your withdrawal is on it's way" (around 1 hour of receipt). Instead of simply stopping the withdrawal as I asked (via Bank transfer, obviously to an account that I have never deposited from) they went ahead and sent my entire account funds...

swiftynifty - Yes, I do normally get emails from Unibet when I withdraw money.

These were simply funds in my account. If I had gambled them away that would show on my history.

It's a sad reflection of the times we live in - but if you want any kind of customer service these days after you have been robbed/lied to/fobbed off or scammed by a corporation - you need to get on social media and do them some damage.

You can spend weeks/months getting nowhere with faceless minimum wage monkeys in some far flung foreign "contact" centre without any joy - but 10 minutes after you (accurately) do them some serious reputational damage on the interweb, miraculously some human being will get in touch with you and right all their wrongs.

It definitely could but I don't know any of them that you can withdraw to a new account, if you had a negative balance on any other card.

I would have realised when I signed in to my Unibet account - I keep track of my account balances (roughly)

Meanwhile, someone out there has opened an account of some kind in my name. Unibet have these details and are not passing them on to me so I can notify them that my identity has been stolen.

Tyrannitar - all you really need is an e-mail, the cc function and a bit of research to find some e-mail addresses for people with a bit of influence.

Have a look at all the crap they sponsor, start writing to some of the people they sponsor and copy them in. Explain what happened to you (keep it truthful and accurate) and enquire as to whether that is the kind of business they want their brand to be associated with. You might be surprised how quickly they get back to you!

What with all the account limits/closures, scams and useless customer service I feel that this fantastic journey that I have been on for 20 years - earning my money from betting - is truly coming to an end.

That was my email I sent them once I had found the withdrawal email. I had no response from this so I contacted them via live chat. I have kept the transcript of that chat.

I'm not saying it's not but it is the betfair forum.

I have a mate who has a personal best of 7 minutes as a response time -  He got the £280 that was stolen from him and £100 "goodwill" - that was a Covid testing business at the Airport. He copied in half of the cabinet, the head of the BMA, BBC Watchdog, Martin Lewis and the Mayor of London. They were 100% in the wrong and having spent 3 weeks previously getting fobbed off and lied to (hours on hold, plus getting repeatedly cut off after hours on hold) - the director of customer care called him on a number that he wasn't even aware he had given them, 7 minutes after he pressed the send button!

^ That's a bit OTT - but you get the picture - don't get mad, get even! GL.

Social media and email the head honcho of Unibet and naming the individuals you've been dealing with. Very soon the manager of the department concerned will swiftly and courteously respond.

With bookies one's to hit back hard and swift. They are the vermin, scumbags the majority of them.

I hope the eagerly awaited Affordability Check and new Betting and Gaming Act will eradicate the sharp practices and wanton abuse of punters by bookies.

The final pishtake for me was, when I reported this to the Police via Action fraud their reply was

"You have indicated within your report that the misuse of your personal details or that of a company trading style played a part in the matter you are reporting. The use of another person’s identity, often referred to as identity theft, is not a police recordable crime."

WTF !!!

One way of keeping the crime rate down for Govt figures I suppose - don't count crimes as crimes.

If this is true as you've laid it out, and no reason to think it isn't, Unibet won't necessarily be at fault, if someone has successfully managed to impersonate you.

Your challenge is to be able to get into touch with someone who knows what they are talking about.

I wouldn't bother on a Sunday evening, raise it as a complaint tomorrow in office hours.

Hey up Jamie sorry to hear you've had this hassle. But if you look back thru this thread you will see that you have revealed your full name, the fact that you are a long term gambler, so we can presume you've got a few bookies accs & your debit card ends in 7440. Just saying....

I dont really understand how this can happen after the banks changed it last year so the account numbers had to match up with your name. So someone has made a seperate bank account in your name, and given these details to unibet for the withdrawal?

How can 'Somebody' Open a Bank Account - in 'Your (or any other person's name) - without providing PROOF of WHO you claim you are?

Thought that would be practically impossible - given Bank's (so-called) New Account Rules - be it just a run of the mill Bank Account.

I think credit rating agencies could furnish one with info regarding any loan or hp in process or taken out. But, never trust bookies. They pedal crack cocaine of betting and promote offers to the hilt for losers, problem gamblers and addicts. Bookies have no scruples, end of!

I had similar odd transaction balance gambled and lost on poker like at 3am, got money back after a week think inside job.Keep chasing it up.

think you can always withdraw via bank transfer regardless of the net deposits rule. they couldn't have tried this with a random card. my guess is the hacker simply gave his own bank account details and used the OPs name when filling in the details. keep calm when messaging them OP and hopefully unibet will sort this in a timely manner

the problem is, that when you put through a bank transfer, if the account number you are sending the money to doesnt match the name then it pops up with a warning that the account name doesnt match the account number. if Unibet have continued with the transaction after that then thats pretty shocking really on their part

I had my account with Coral reduced from about forty pound to pence without me using it. The bets were losing casino ones and I have never ever been a casino user. Still trying to get my money back.

I think once the OP received the email it was already too late and the money had left unibet's end. if you can find the time of withdrawal request in your account you will probably see it was made about 2-3 hrs before your email which explains why they were so unhelpful as the money was already gone

CALL THE POLICE. By OP's account, the money was stolen, not accidentally sent to the wrong account. This is what the police are for. We should not rely on social media shaming to counter theft.

If your bookmaker doesnt have TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (everyone reading this turn it on now everywhere )  I would close my account down immediately.

Obviously I did not request a withdrawal but at least the money is back now - is it pure coincidence that, as of this morning, my local Police (Glos) are treating this as a crime and are investigating...?

Good to hear this.  Also good to know the intermediary payment processors are doing their due diligence.   Assuming you are staying with them, I would suggest you consider opening a brand new account with them i.e. dis-associate yourself from any account numbers / names you currently use. It's not fool-proof because obviously you still have to use some of your info, but is a sensible step nonetheless.

A good result. Am I right in thinking that the money was bounced around and then returned, rather than Unibet actually listening to you and recovering it?

I'm glad the money is back in your account; £708 is a large sum for a bookie account to go awol. Now, bite the bullet and open one with another bookie with a history of representation on the high street. Something incredibly dodgy had happened no doubt someone was trying it on.

Yes, the money just bounced back - Unibet did nothing to stop this. Really useless Customer Services. They said that they were investigating this yet they didn't even know that the money had been returned to my account until I told them.

...and I wish I could more prominent bookmakers but my accounts are limited to incredibly small, if any, bets - ie pennies.
Bet365, BetVictor, Betfred, Ladbrokes, Corals, ****, William Hill all closed my accounts completely

It's when you've been effectively barred by all the names on that list, and you find yourself clicking on outfits with names like Unibet, that you know the game is up. Just walk away. At some point you're going to be ripped off or welshed on by one of these online jokers, and that will cancel out whatever profit you might make by getting 20/1 about 14/1 shots.

Yeah, I think you're right. I have been trading on Betfair since the noughties (we all remember how easy it was to earn on Betfair in those days) and at one stage was invited up to their Manchester offices for a bit of fine tuning as I had been picked by them to become an area representative - helping new customers to learn how to use Betfair. It was supposed to be a 'big thing' and I would be earning a percentage of the LIFETIME spend of each new customer that I trained. I became the Gloucestershire trainer for Betfair. All was rosy. Then the Betfair structure changed somehow and the whole idea was scrapped.
These days I can't get more than a few quid on with any bookie (bar one) and once I get restricted on that one the game is pretty much up. It has been an amazing time though - I was a (fairly) young man when I started, living in a rented house with my 4 sons and wife and labouring on building sites. Due to going full-time on Betfair I own my own home and live a really comfortable life with a share of a couple of small businesses.
Ups and downs yes but TFF Betfair.
Just about time to concentrate on other things though.

Once again, many thanks to all the forumites who have added advice and support over my Unibet issue. I shan't be leaving money in accounts from now on.

Glad you got your money back. May I strongly suggest( if you havent done already) You change all your passwords everywhere to unique long passwords. And turn on Two Step Authencation everywhere you can. ( and everyone who has followed this thread)

Betfair have had Two Factor as an option for years now- You would be amazed how many dont turn it on.( Google are doing the correct thing and turning on two factor for users as default.

If the problem was someone inside Unibet, who knows what other information and personal details they have collected.

Hopefully passwords are coming to an end with, FIDO2 Passwordless Authentication. But this is maybe 10 years off.........

And they (The Racing Post) wonder why people are turning to the "the black market" - when you can't have a bet with any of the established high street names (accounts closed or restricted) and all the peripheral scum that have sprung up (just to cash-in on slots and casino games) are of the same ilk as Unibet!
