After such a torrid year of bad luck and chasing I sat long and hard about what to do for the future. I’ve been gambling 20 years solid now and it’s taken it’s toll to be honest on my health. I decided this week to give it one last try & see if I can make some decent money in the next 12 months. 1st bet & I Decided to put a grand on the John Best horse in the last. Smashed off the boards & gets chinned by the outsider of the race. I’m almost certain now that has confirmed to me that by continuing with this game is going to add further turmoil for as long as I do it.

If you’re betting in grands then you aren’t doing it for fun.
Try picking out some big priced horses and betting tenners on them. You won’t go skint very quickly and you’ll enjoy it when you do get a winner. Chasing on shorties will only get you out the sh1t every now and then.

day to day betting on 3 grand races is the way to the poor house in these times imo, could be done years ago i did it but not now thats just win betting not laying or trading, ive given up a while ago and far happyier on the big meetings and big days its very rare you complain about horses not off and fiddled with and more time on your hands to enjoy life i spend hours 3-4 hours now crypto trading and share dealing, better than horses and you use the same methods but its gambling just the same nothing different really but far more profitable, but not for everyone

saddo - He mentions chasing, hulk. No matter what your strategy is, chasing will destroy you.
Yes, the difference between entertainment and compulsion is quite easy to identify. Chasing losses and turning a loss into a bigger loss is compulsion and probably time to stop for a while.

Christ man if gambling is affecting your health then just walk away and walk now.
Nothing, absolutely nothing is more important than your good health and looking after it.
Believe me, I know that more than most.

Walk away. If nothing else, 14 posts in 13 years suggests you don't enjoy punting - if you enjoyed it, you'd talk about it?
For myself, I don't pretend to be one of the big players on here - I bet one or two races a day, £2 win, £8 place, enjoy reading the form and coming to an opinion and having some 'skin in the game' to make it fun when I watch the race.

Rambo, if you're genuine I would say it's obvious looking in from outside that you need to quit cold turkey. It's hard to comment on these sort of things without sounding smug or a know it all, some of the light hearted comments on here are fine, but if you're are suffering which I believe you are, a bit more understanding is nice.
The solution is simple, doing it is the hard bit and ultimately no one but yourself can do it.
Maybe I'm off the mark, but I get the feeling you're in a really bad place and whilst not wanting to sound "soft" by sympathising with a stranger, I'd rather do that and get it wrong rather than acting like a tw@t with a smarmy comment.
Talk is cheap as they say, maybe finding something else you love doing and putting you're energy into that may help, who knows but although I don't know you from Adam, I'm wishing you all the best buddy.

Rambo. I guess the fact that 110 others beat you to your nicknane says it all
Take three months off dont drink or do drugs then put all that money into a tank. Divide that tank by forty to set you standard bet size then start again. Enjoy the game. Its fab.
In these lean months i would focus on race replays

you are right though, unless we're talikng about specific and very select markets, if you can't win in the win market you sure as hell won't win backing place only

I think you should use stewy as your inspiration to carry on Rambo….his last winning run was in 2007,his mental health is in bits,he’s got an imaginary girlfriend,he couldn’t get a winner in a 1 horse race and yet he still keeps on going.
So there is hope mate.

Just lay a few odds on football teams playing away from home.Start with a couple of hundred in your bank balance and lay small bets for a few weeks until your bank balance reaches 2 or 3 grand .Then have a blast at horses,if the horses lose go back to the football odds on away teams and spend another couple of weeks building up your bank ,then try another blast at the horses in the hope you get a winner.but if you are really struggling to win money stick to the odds on away football teams .it will get you 20 or 30 grand a year if play the (block martingale=lay 6 teams to lose £20,6 teams to lose £40 ,6 teams to lose £80 going back to start of system after every winner) when you hit 15 grand increase stakes.its a fool proof system for winning money.Good luck Rambo, and don't forget it was Brass that told you the secret to success.now let this thread drop or everyone will be laying the odds on away teams.

I'm sure you've asked yourself "and then what"? In the last 20 years have you also been living without gambling and could your other life replace gambling long term more interestingly (and healthily)? Or will it be a case of "out of the frying pan" if you replace gambling with (say) more time at the pub? Have you a number of other interests that will keep you occupied going forward? I hope you have an old classic car project in your garage that you were always going to start, golfing, running, dancing, cycling, gardening, walking the dog etc then the sedentary pursuits like bridge, watching TV, listening to music, making models, art etc through to learning, forms of voluntary work - but will the turmoil be left behind in the new life you are starting? Only you know the answer but for your health it sounds like you know that a change is needed.
It will be a long journey but as with stopping any addiction it's one day at a time. Good luck on whatever you decide but if you have your health you're already off to a flying start - anyway enough of this I'm off to do my voluntary job now, stay lucky LHF

This game is not for anyone who needs to make money over time. The odds roundup and commission means you can't beat the maths. If there was a system after 200 years of racing , someone would have found it. Betting is a pastime, like golf or photography. Each time you do it you pay for your entertainment and thats it. I treat each race like a crossword, its a puzzle to solve , but I only stake £2 a race or less. Over time I expect to lose but its fun when you do solve the puzzle occasionally. If you can't see it like this then you should and must walk away or your health will suffer, there is a thin line between excitement and anxiety. The joy of winning and the fear of losing have just a horses nose distance between them. Good luck and thanks for sharing, which will help others I believe.

I agree with the puzzle analogy. Some races are so clear that I'm 100% sure I've cracked that particular puzzle, and then the result is exactly as expected. E.g. lay the fav at 2.6, back the second fav at 5.0, back an e/w saver poke at 15/1. The second fav wins, EW poke 2nd, fav unplaced.

i did like brians post to be honest, the thing is we all and i do mean all have had that feeling and still do, one minute it is oh noooo after bad day fter day and feel useless and sad , then that feeling of asking wife would you love cup of tea darling knowing every thing is sweet just won at horses and now have football on and golf later to night isnt life fantasic. but none of it lasts thats a sure fact so it is one day at a time and slow fun.i would say to poster that having grand on the first bet running to get money back was what gave you the sinking feeling. the only way to have fun bets is having a system that you follow and stick to it, it could be anything like in handicapps bet the top weight but only if second fav and put them in line so you always have some fun to look forward to, tweak the system to suit prices yo like to have fun with. the amount of people i have here say the only way to bet is singles they need stop saying it as most people only bet for fun and chasing with single bet after single bet is one way to loss everything. betting small stake bookie lines is one way to enjoy the fun of racing but stick to your plan system. change the system if you dont like that one you will have lost few pounds but nothing to make you feel lost.get that feeling back of fun no matter what you do as its all we have every day is do what we can some cant do sports now or cant walk or cant go sociallizing all anyof us can do is live one day at time and hopefully as peacefull as we can.
