Well done acey. One of the all time greats I was lucky enough to grow up watching and idolising. Fasted and wasted his body to make the weight for 45 years, existing largely on coffee and cigars, and still going strong at 86. His "five a day" weren't fruit and veg. they were winners around the likes of Lingfield Park and then somewhere else at night, often six days a week. Many more of them Sir Lester.

I have a rather large piece of artwork of him in Ardross colours, wishing me a happy birthday and signed all the best Lester Piggott, pride of place, without doubt the best of all time, many happy returns sir.

Nice pics, particularly with Sir Henry. I first saw him live in around 1964 at Newmarket riding for Murless and again at Ascot winning the Kings Stand on Goldhill. Lester and Ardross were poetry. Rodrigo de Triano another I remember well.

I only had a few rides as an apprentice and the biggest thrill of my whole life bar none was being drawn next to Lester at Windsor.....I though if i die now i will die a happy man.

It`s a nice close up photo Acey. To refresh your memory it is Hokusai going to post for the 1991 Derby. The top hats on the crowd was the giveaway. tbh can`t remember much about the horse.
Acey to ride in a race against "The Long Fellow" is a great achievement.

Lester always said that Sir Ivor (pictured above Chocolate with sky blue hoops) was the best he ever rode.

Lester asked Brian Rouse for a lift to Brighton races from Newmarket.
It was a scorching day and on the way home Lester said to Brian, "Take the second left, then first right 100 yards down the road. There is a wee shop there that sells the best ice cream in the world".
Brian does this. Lester returns to the car with a huge double cone with two flakes covered with raspberry sauce.
Brian is fuming, "Ffs Lester. I drive you all the way to Brighton and back and I said I didn`t want any petrol money and you go and buy a big ice cream cone and don`t even get me one!".
"Sorry Brian", replies Lester, "I didn`t know you liked Ice Cream!".

The only time I spoke to the great man was outside an Ice Cream shop at Hampton Court bridge. I had watched the last race at Sandown from the car park, got what I thought was first run on most others there. Lester, having won the last, had managed to use the road along the back of Sandown ( he had a driver), beat me to the ice cream shop but was willing to sign my race card before heading to Heathrow to ride in Paris the next day. I still had to drive back to Gloucestershire.

As stated above, Pat Glennon rode Sea Bird, not Lester.
Crowned was a decent 2-y-o that beat Rheingold twice but he didn`t live up to expectations at three.

Had a soft palate at three and therefore didn't live up to expectations. Trained by Bernard van custem who had High Top also as a 2-y-o and Crowned Prince massively superior. High Top won the 2000 Guineas the following year! Should have been Crowned Prince.

Lester was invited to go pheasant shooting by Harry Carr, a prominent English horseman, on his property at Wickhambrook, near Newmarket.
From BloodHorse:
'Lester was standing in a line of guns between two well-known jockeys of yesteryear, Jimmy Lindley and Joe Mercer. Quite a few birds had come Lester's way, and none thus far had suffered any ill effects.
Toward the end of the drive when the beaters and their dogs had approached to within 50 to 60 yards, a large **** pheasant came running down the fence line.
To Carr's absolute horror, Piggott quickly threw his shotgun to his shoulder and took aim.
Harry shouted, "No, no, Lester! You cannot shoot it when it is running!"
"The bugger won't stand still!" Lester replied and quickly followed this with a blast that practically blew the bird in half.'
