He said he didn't mistake the path for the finishing line, and that he knew the horse had enough left in him to win despite not pushing him out to the actual line.
And he managed not to laugh whilst he was spouting this drivel...

Why did he start riding again when he realised his mistake? Just be honest you screwed and were very lucky not to be caught out. Bang average jockeys like him, can't afford to be honest I suppose.

Mitch must have a very low opinion of the racing public if he thinks anyone bar Alex believes he didn't stop riding by mistake. get a lot more credit if he just admitted it.

given the choice between an explanation which criticises a jockey and an alternative (yet implausible) explanation which blows smoke up him, it is unsurprising which one the saccharine one would choose.

Mitchell Bastyan, the rider of the winner, KING’S PROCTOR (IRE), had appeared to ease his horse prematurely. After being interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, the Stewards noted Bastyan’s explanation that he felt he had the race won but after viewing recordings of the race acknowledged that this was an overly confident assumption. The Stewards reminded him of his responsibility to always ride out to the line and drew his attention to the risks involved when failing to do so.

Took keen hold, midfield, headway and close up before 2 out, not fluent 2 out, soon led, ridden and hard pressed last, edged left and hampered rivals run-in, soon eased, just did enough, rider mistook winning post (tchd 4/1)
over to you Stewards ....
