Sir Edwin Landseer out of Galileo, trained originally by APOB

It's a fake!

19th century copy(a good one)

Bought at Ascot racecourse in 1990 for £720. Current valuation £3k-4k

At least they got a free restoration and cleaning thanks to the BBC.
Report GLASGOWCALLING August 12, 2021 6:59 AM BST
Strange one if it's just a very good copy,to get that detailed work
and to fake the water damage, on a canvas the exact size as the " original". CrySad
Report hunt lunt and cunningham August 12, 2021 8:27 AM BST
Think the small kink in the left hand frame as had the original and the exact size was interesting. Thought it had more going for it than not. Would of liked the result to have been decided by more than just one persons reasoning.
Report Storm Alert August 12, 2021 9:03 AM BST
Always liked this program although thought some of the investigations in recent series have been a bit contrived. My fav episode form way back was when they sent a painting to the The Courtauld institute and the French barstewards decided it was a copy and decreed it had to be destroyed, despite having a reasonable residue value.

Is this a new series?
Report Ramruma August 12, 2021 10:26 AM BST
This is a new series, and we are three episodes in. Head ye to BBC iplayer.

Not sure if I need to wash my ears out but every time the lady owner said Landseer, it sounded like Lancia, the Italian cars.
Report elise August 12, 2021 11:54 AM BST

Kink= genuine imo
Report Pilsudski August 12, 2021 3:12 PM BST
Way too middle class.
Report suffolkpunch August 12, 2021 3:44 PM BST
I agree about the kink in the canvas. I thought this was the strongest piece of evidence proving the picture was genuine. It would not surprise me that at a later date, and considered by another 'expert' the picture is confirmed as being the original.
Report .Marksman. August 12, 2021 3:59 PM BST
Fascinating programme.  I did see "Monarch of the Glenn" in that gallery nearly 30 years ago and I'd forgotton how beautiful it is.
This painting ("War") looks fake as the detail in the black and white photograph just isn't there in this one (especially the dagger handle, which is away from the supposed "damage").  There would have been no reason to embelish detail in the handle by retuoching the photographic plate when there is no such detail there originally.  And the white shiny parts look like fast brush strokes with a fairly thick brush which would have been difficult to reproduce on a glass negative.
I accept that someone has gone to a lot to trouble to fake this, but this is what people do.  It is listed as destroyed ...and then turns up in the silver ring at Ascot, with no explanation as to where it was inbetween.
Report elise August 12, 2021 4:07 PM BST
alistair down used to turn up in the silver ring at ascot having been missing for long periods with no explanation as to how he looked water damaged
Report elise August 12, 2021 4:09 PM BST
he'd probably have been listed as destroyed a few times too

Yes so did I in a restaurant in the square next to the Sacré-Cœur Arc weekend when Dalakhani won. He was there with his wife and both were quite happy to chat for a while, we were all listening to a French The Cure tribute band. I really liked the guy as like me he was well into NH racing.

Ridiculous decision, that kink is as good as a finger print imo.

The monet episode was my fav, went to the wildensteins and was rejected, Bendor was on the programme back then and was 100% convinced it was right.

Report Ramruma August 13, 2021 7:59 PM BST
Probably the wrong verdict on the Landseer although if it was heavily and ham-fistedly restored after the flood that might explain part of it.

The most outrageous wrong verdict was the Churchill one when Bendor turned up an old BBC documentary showing the old man painting the bloody thing. Part of the reason for the expert verdict was that the painting was too good to be by Churchill. Laugh

But at least the owners can keep their painting and enjoy it (or one of them can) as there is no pressure to sell it for buttons.

Interestingly, and without wishing to leave too many spoilers, earlier in the series a painting that had been called a fake by the original expert was now accepted as genuine, partly through the programme's research but probably also because the new expert was not already publicly committed to their original position.

Well done fella!
Report Ramruma August 19, 2021 9:32 AM BST
Sounded like the owner had to pay for the restoration but the rest of the investigation would probably be the hard part.

Thoughts:-
1 The Welsh tourist board would have loved the opening with Philip on the beach.
2 Considering Covid stopped them going anywhere, they dragged the owner round the country far more than was necessary or even interesting to the viewer
3 Philip's house looks cool; hope PB's burglar-forumites so not find this thread
4 Fiona's extensive research seemed to comprise her opening books where the actual expert had placed ribbon bookmarks
5 Bring back Bendor
6 How much does the BBC have to pay to use Philip's Mayfair showroom as a studio?

fell asleep for 10 mins, what did the family say about their dad paying £58,000 for a fake can they get the money back/sue whoever sold it to him ?
Report Storm Alert July 29, 2025 8:18 AM BST
Had to take it on the chin. Buyer beware I assume if the painting came with no compelling providence, I guess. Sort of knew the chances of a new Renoir being unearthed was very unlikely. The unfinished painting of the girl was superb and there was some hope (but no from the Wildenstein Institute, who seem to be right bunch of bastewards) ; valuation of 5k vs 500k incredible really.
Report 1st time poster July 29, 2025 10:37 AM BST
did they prove that the 58 grand fake was sold through a gallery or private sale, you,d have thought your purchase is covered if its proved theyve sold a fake through a gallery,at 58 grand you assume it wasnt catol as a fake
