hello workrider

hope your well

chester is always expensive has been for years ,day members or county stand can cost more than royal ascot one you see ok racing one you see the best racing in the world, chester has a big open space in the middle where people could go and picnic for say a tenner and still be close to the action, but no they will just ram it up everybody, not just with entrance cost but the cost of everything else when you are there, chester bet takes 10%of the sp the punters who use them will not be aware as they do not need to display that fact,i have no doubt if asked why the course is not open they will blame covid as many other walks of life will for the rest of both our lives, its a real shame the way chester has gone i know its not every ones cup of tea but i do enjoy the up coming vase meeting, next week at york who cater for the same kind of racegoer is all round great value to suit everybodys pocket.

Report ItsMeSwaddle May 5, 2021 2:27 PM BST
There is surely no chance after Chelt the first time around that they will be first to commit to anything?

If the football is back and maskless to 1/2 capacity then surely racing will follow suit, dont see racing being first to do anything.

Jim a couple of questions, I have about 30 UK IRE tracks to do, you dont know which of the 30 are left ofc, but how far down the list would Chester be to visit? Ive been into the town and seen what thats like so dont overly need to see that part again!

And how many of the 50 odd courses we have do you feel are better off financially with no crowds in?

good morning swaddle

your first question about chester

i know i gave it some stick earlier on this thread and i do not like the way it is been run and to be honest can only see the company getting even greedier ,it is a great course to visit especially this fixture i accept not everyone likes chester and can understand that, however i would be pretty sure the current vase meeting would suit you, train station about a 20 minute walk through the town, the friday nights and saturdays like york and haydock are probably best avoided, they do have a friday afternoon fixture the day before the st leger which i sometimes go to and in all honesty its a bit to quiet in fact the last time i went i left after 5 races and went in the pub that overlooks the finishing straight, then popped out to watch from the wall,to answer how far down the list i would have chester in the top 20 of courses to visit in fact i could not split the vase meeting over the dante meeting.

2nd question

i could not put a number on how many would be better of without crowds as it beggars belief that some seem fine with it but whilst they are getting grants i would say 20 upwards, leicester a track i like do try but have always struggled to get crowds large asian population, miles out of the town and other big sporting teams in the city probably the reasons they would be better of just getting the tv/data money as would others as i say i like leicester and they do try there best ,here is a few examples when the public are meant to be allowed back on may 17th.

hexham may 18th no public just members and shareholders

huntingdon no public for the fixtures on may 18th and may 31st clearly getting to much help and thats a jcr course who where trying to sell kempton to raise money,so in fact on the 2nd day of the public been allowed back nobody can go night racing that date,we all saw the stampede to sit outside pubs in the cold for some reason racing does not fancy taking any of that money people want to spend.

newmarket may 22nd 4000 attendance but only 1500 public already sold out who are the other 2,500 ? i think they have around 1200 members so that would leave 1300 owners or perhaps the gravy train is been well looked after.

stratford first 3 fixtures only the centre course is open.

ponte only the 3rd ring open thats a large car park 2 furlongs out.

you say you dont see racing to be the first to do anything nor do i,sageform suggest cheltenham  in october as ridiculous as it is i would take that as been back to an unrestricted crowd ,even though its almost 6 months later than barry hearn got a full house in doors at the snooker.

to many in racing have become to comfortable with the situation no traffic nice and easy to wander around the racecourse itv racing seem to have more staff than mcdonalds they are fine and dandy with it in fact they struggle not to show how much they are enjoying been there ,i pay to go racing over 200 days a year and i know a few others from this forum who do the same yet these sort of loyal racegoers are been forgotten,2 tracks that race in the period from may 17th till june 21st are tracks i am an annual member at are making it very complicated to go racing even for a member who just wants to go racing again ,imagine those who are not as keen they will in the end just give up and find something else to do.

from june 21st as we stand social distancing ends however i fear many racecourses with dither around and chase many away from the sport its not just the uk ,the head of hri said the other day he hopes to get some crowds back for listowel which is in late september where on earth is the ambition from the people who run the sport ,50,000 turned up at the kentucky derby last weekend yet it seems like so long as the the industry insiders are ok over here sod the punters.
Report The Knight May 6, 2021 8:58 AM BST
I just don't understand people on here. Perpetual moaners.

Many seem to have made their minds up what racing will be like on course from May 17th without having even read the track's websites. Also, so many were so desperate to go back on track a year ago but now only want to do so on their own terms.

Of course things will not be the same to start with but we are, hopefully, going through the tail end of a global pandemic that could easily flare up again in the UK.

In the first week back, I am booked up to be at Notts x 2, Southwell, M Rasen and Haydock. Then the second week, Beverley, Ripon and so on.

I am a member at three tracks but whether a member or not, the booking procedures have not been that onerous, for god's sake! Filling out a track and trace from and returning it, basically.

I do not dispute that some tracks probably like the idea of no spectators for small, midweek meetings but let's not bl**dy well encourage them by not turning up and then giving them good reason to go behind closed doors!

Racing still loves to be a 'club' but those of us not in the club must try to stop that by still going.

But, to be fair, racing has not pushed for spectators because it has not wanted to blot its copybook over the sport returning on June 1st last year - which I somewhat understand.

To end, though, last September I went to the one day pilot at Donny. I was pleased at how close to normal it was, just the pre-parade ring off limits and I wasn't able to get around the whole of the paddock. But viewing was as normal.

So, for the 'racegoers' out there intent on moaning, why not just give it a chance during the first few weeks and then if you don't like it stay at home! But complaining without really knowing what it will be like is not on.
Report jimnast May 6, 2021 9:21 AM BST

Yes, this mask wearing is tiresome and outdoors it is just about being politically correct. But, better to be able to go and have to wear a mask than not be able to go at all.

I am booked to go racing at least 4 times a week now until end of year all over the midlands and the North, but the only track I have not bothered with yet is Ponte. Either it is Norman's legal background, or it is picky local authority, but what on earth the track is doing I cannot fathom.

Either the third stand nearer the M62 than the finish line (well, nearly) or a Premier Enclosure where you have a bit of grass to watch the races from plus a bit of paddock viewing. No grandstand steps even, if the website is correct. No, Ponte can await my return to a bit more sense prevails.

Lastly, to Jimnast. Yes, sorry mate I am 61 and had a long IT career with some major banks, so I do have an advantage. But, too many of us older generation imagine it is all harder online than it actually is. If you do have any issues or questions with booking racing tickets etc online and have nobody else to ask, message me via this site. I would do anything to assist other genuine racegoers.

UPDATED 7:25PM, MAY 8 2021

Owners returning to the paddock and the removal of the need to wear a facemask outside are among the relaxations racecourses are seeking to bring in for racing after May 17 provided government coronavirus restrictions are eased a week on Monday.

It is understood from multiple sources that the strict demarcation between trainers and owners, which has been in force since racing returned in June last year, is likely to end and enable those owning the horses to interact more freely with professionals on racedays.

It is not yet clear how the move will impact the zoning arrangement at the tracks with the likes of trainers, jockeys, staff and media so far operating in a 'green zone' and owners distanced from the action in an 'amber zone' where spectators will return to from May 17.

The separation of owners and professionals on racedays has increasingly led to irritability within the sport with trainer Tom Dascombe last week saying it "makes no sense" he could not have a drink with his winning owners at Chester but could do so at a pub.

Mandatory masks: but after May 17 new protocols may mean owners will no longer have to wear them outside
Mandatory masks: but after May 17 new protocols may mean owners will no longer have to wear them outside
Pool
In response, Racecourse Association chief executive David Armstrong outlined that racing was beholden to government rules, but added: "If racing could make its own changes to how things are now then it might look different."

Racing figures are nervously awaiting an announcement from prime minister Boris Johnson in the coming days as to whether conditions have been met to unlock England further from May 17 which would enable crowds of up to 4,000 to attend racecourses, including paying spectators for the first time since the end of last year.

While there is no expectation that larger attendances will be permitted on racecourses until June 21, the date scheduled for the lifting of all lockdown restrictions in England, those at the course from next Monday are likely to no longer need to wear a facemask when not inside, with a source outlining that and greater contact for owners "will form part of" the changes.

Next month is a key one for racing in Britain with the Cazoo Derby meeting at Epsom and Royal Ascot taking place, and owners and spectators are eager to return to the racecourse after months of participating in the action remotely.

Officials at Ascot stated this month that they were "hopeful" of being able to get up to 10,000 people on the course for the royal meeting.

The fixture is understood to be being considered as a pilot event for the next round of tests being conducted by the Events Research Programme, which is testing different scenarios involving getting people to, from and around venues in a safe way ahead of the phased reopening of society following lockdown.

Was at Plumpton this afternoon. 157 owners booked. Mask police were very active unlike Fontwell on Wednesday.

I would have thought the mask would be light touch today as it is going out of fashion on Monday week.

Not really -Track and trace, muzzles, covid marshalls. As the Anorak said, a day out at Porton Down would be less bothersome.

I've also seen one item on the website for Salisbury that any sane person would assume was a spoof:

"There will be limited seating available, therefore it is highly recommended that you bring your own portable/folding chair."

But it's for real!

As a member at Kelso I got a letter regarding attendance at the May 30th meeting which will be Members only. There was a fair list of "thou shalt nots", and an indication that all the best viewing places will be out of bounds, at which point I had decided that it's probably best to wait until the September meeting before returning, assuming we aren't on the the 4th/5th/6th (delete as appropriate) wave by then.
