He has RUN or

I think this has arrived in the UK from Ireland and has rapidly spread through the jockeys, ex-jockey presenters, pundits, then on to the supposedly educated presenters until there'll be nobody left to infect. Once I hear Nick Luck say it I think the disease has won.

Jason Weaver has an allergy to adverbs, “ He came through strong “ or ,” he started slow”. They have an ,”ly” , on the end Jason. See if you can learn this quick.

Had to laugh at Hoiles the other day, I backed  a horse called Vandad, which hoiles insisted on calling Vondodd,LaughGrin He reminded of the policeman in Hello Hello.

I think dropping the -ly came from americans.
Report swiftynifty December 21, 2020 10:46 AM GMT
Gaze, I think you are correct. The Americans started using and then trashed our language and unfortunately our teachers and their students have grown up with American TV.

Two more that irritate and have spread through racing.

The horse is HEADED to post.  WRONG.  The horse is HEADING to post or HAS headed to post.

The horse got BEAT.   WRONG.  The horse got BEATEN.

I think I heard Nick Luck say got BEAT so I think the US virus has won, but then again he appears more on their TV than ours now.

Absolutely correct,Swifty.Grammar has gone in this world of retards.

Two more..

The horse is coming off OF a good run. WRONG. For what purpose have you added in the OF?

The horse is reverting back to a mile. WRONG. So the horse is going back back to a mile. OK, I guess if it's dropping back to a shorter distance that it has run at previously you could maybe accept it but I don't think this is what the abusers actually mean.

reg, and the common 'You know...', well I don't know that's why I've asked you the question.

My pet hate is another Americanism "kind of" or even worse "kinda". People no longer think they just "kind of" think etc. Some cannot get through a sentence witout using those two words.
Report swiftynifty December 23, 2020 12:17 PM GMT
reg, I agree I find that a particularly rude one, I know it's not meant like that and many Irish racing people say it but I always think when I hear it, 'Now listen to me, I'm so important..' !
Report workrider December 23, 2020 12:29 PM GMT
Yet the poor ENGLISH can't even say the word Southwell properly, Suttell  etc....Laugh
Report workrider December 23, 2020 12:35 PM GMT
I do agree with most on here us Irish have a tendency to miss out our last two letters , what has really got up my nose is this Furlin instead of Furlong by our Irish commentators ,but you must remember Irish maybe our First language and English our second , so please forgive our little mistakes...
Report swiftynifty December 23, 2020 12:45 PM GMT
workrider, you are forgiven, anyhow it's the English now who are the worst at trashing their own language.

on pronunciation of certain English words by some Irish people why do they say turd for third? Is there a similar word in Gaelic?
Report workrider December 23, 2020 12:49 PM GMT
we also say tree for 3...I stayed in Thirsk recently and kept saying Thursk when people asked me were I was staying...Laugh

Leonna Mayor tells us that Hayley Turner may not be riding today as 'She'd RODE in France last week'

Serious question, did some of these ex-jockeys not go to school?
Report steerforth December 27, 2020 3:04 PM GMT
Darren Owen with his "xyz being rode along in rear". OK so some have suggested he might be saying "rowed". But I can only hear it as bad grammar, and at best it's ambiguous, so just avoid saying it at all. Rant over.
Report steerforth December 27, 2020 3:07 PM GMT
And another which is unique to racing as far as I can tell. "The ground was plenty soft enough for him" - aside from the car crash of grammatical structure, what is actually meant is "The ground was too soft" - you just have to know that for it to make any sense at all.
