Closing the market makes them money - punters can't offset their commission.

Betfair know exactly what they're doing.

They think they know what they're doing but the liquidity is far lower in the specials markets so new players cba.

I take your point, but not only do betfair keep all the commission from the original market, but they get a whole new lot from punters like Virgin, laying off. They'd lose all of that if they kept the original market open.
