Frowned upon by so called professional gamblers but you can get the first 6 losers yet still have chance of a winning treble

Peanuts stakes for relatively decent win, with an interest for the duration of the afternoon

One Christmas I was having a very lean time ( Charles Dickens type lean ). On the days leading up to Christmas the Sporting Life had articles on all the top trainers at the time, ending with their best hope of a winner on Boxing Day. I carefully noted all these good things and on the day I placed them in a Union Jack, not having enough to cover them in doubles and trebles. I think I had 1 winner at 1/3.
One good thing that came out of it is that I've never taken the slightest notice of trainers columns or articles since and wouldn't believe any one of them if they quoted from the Bible.

Only the greyhound pest could possibly put up a recommendation for a Union Jack bet

wtf is "an all day run for my money"

it's a mugs bet and the only person that doesn't realise that is you

Great bet, easy to work out ennit ?
Only need three winners in one row
3\9 ennit ? 3\1 chance of getting it up
Not a bad bet when you think about it !

You do the mafs.....

I suggest you are the one who needs to do the mafs...
After 20 years of settling in shops until 2003, I can confirm that the Union Jack is a complete mugs bet.

Not only have to got to pick winners but you have to put them in the right boxes unless you pick 9 winners and even then you going to be miffed because you only get trebles Cry

Lighten up Saxon FFS I was taking the p out of the dopey fecker that started the thread

Youre all missing the point

It's a coppers bet for all-day interest

Law of averages says youre not usually going to get 5 winners from 9 anyway, Penzance. Unless youre going odds-on selections which defeats the object

Do a placepot and you can crash first leg!

Horrible Flag - So ,outdated - and aesthetically entirely UNappealing. Cry

So is the Union that it represents, nowadays, too.  Cry

Surprised that the daft bet still exists.
Report TheGoddess August 12, 2020 8:01 PM BST
can actually get 6 winners and nowt back, the 6 either side of a diagonal treble
Report leif August 12, 2020 8:01 PM BST
A Union Jack Patent / 56 bets was often a more popular bet.

Loads more dosh to get flushed down the pan.
Report woodmanchester August 12, 2020 8:40 PM BST
Agree Goddess if youre getting six winners daily Union Jack no use Silly

The other way to play for basically an all-dayer other than Union Jack, do Placepot and if first two legs dont go in, try a Quadpot

Leif, 56 bets is a huge number. Wouldnt entertain it, cost a fortune for anything worthwhile. Rather get the 3 winners and just hope they line up

should be named Union Jack 'Patient',done

As a general rule - if "they" print a special pretty slip for it - it's a mug bet.

Possibly the only exception is a Luck 15 (if triple odds for one winner). hth.

will anyone go into a bookies every again , i certainly wouldnt ;  its been years since i last went in one and that wasnt for a bet , mind you it is a very pretty slip  and a reminder of the glorious union of n ireland walesand scotland , ruled with a benign hand by the english of course
Report Markyacard August 12, 2020 11:30 PM BST
Try a Liverpool Round The Clock or Alphabet. Mind you the last time i went into a betting shop i couldn't find the slips. You'd think the bookies would promote these far more to aspiring youngsters coming into the game.

Saxon Farm, for me you bring up a very good and salient point about gambling.  I knew phuck all about gambling up to the age of thirtyish, even though I'd been betting since I was twelve, when I went behind the counter of my mate's independent to help him out for a fortnight - just taking slips, helping out as asked etc:  What an eye-opener.  It certainly showed me so much about punting, and more importantly, bookmaking, odds,  etc; etc; than I had ever considered let alone known.  My point is this.  Every youth who gambles should, at the age of eighteen, be made to do the same.  Work in a bookies for a fortnight.  It would probably stop a high percentage of them ever becoming problem gamblers.  It certainly did me.

Alternatively you can try an up and down acca, if cash, stop at a winner or Round Robin but that's only 3 selections

Gus Demmy used to have some interesting bets! Laugh

You all take it far too seriously. Gambling should just be a bit of fun

Besides, those of you who say money down the drain (peanuts), what about the millions who do Lotto?

Furthermore, the law of averages says, if you back odds against (after any stoppages, deductions and bookies profit margins) youre going to lose more times than not anyway Tongue Out
