I'd have a lumpy evens bet when there is more data regarding calculating a good estimate for the IFR for Covid it is significantly higher than the widely accepted estimate of 0.1 for seasonal flu. The double whammy is then that more of the population are vulnerable so although in general the IFR is still low it's the weight of numbers in the population that makes it more dangerous than seasonal flu.

I think another fear was that once hospitalised with Covid the recovery times are on average much longer than for seasonal flu with patients in for weeks. The beds taken are taken for longer.

Look at the faces of these commuters. Do they look local to you? Or are they mainly economic migrants? How many of these are still on furlough or government Covid-19 financial aid package? Do they care if they contribute to a 2nd Covid-19 spike in the UK?

A classic example of common sense void.

Is China fighting a second wave of coronavirus? Beijing shuts gyms and a city of 10million people is put in lockdown
China has shut downs gyms and swimming pools in Beijing amid fears the country is vulnerable to a second wave of coronavirus.
It comes just days after the communist regime quarantined a city of 10million people in its north west region near Russia
And on Saturday China's northwestern province of Shaanxi reported seven new imported cases coronavirus, all in citizens returning home from Russia.

Amazing the fact that charities want money to save the unfortunates in India and Pakistan when their death rate is mega lower than the UK and US just as an example?

One of the most remote towns in the country has suffered the highest coronavirus infection rate in the UK, according to the latest data. At least 552 people in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, have caught Covid-19 since the start of the outbreak, say government figures. The town, which has a population of 67,000 people, has a rate of 882 cases per 100,000 people, reports Mailonline. Barrow’s infection rate is therefore more than double that of Wales (365), triple England’s (244) and Scotland’s (251) and quadruple the rate recorded in Northern Ireland (220).    Experts have struggled to explain why the industrial town on the Furness peninsula in the North West has turned into a hotspot for the virus, but local public health officials say it may be skewed by higher testing figures. Visit our live blog for the latest updates: Coronavirus news live Colin Cox, the director of public health for Cumbria, claims the NHS trust in the area began mass-testing its employees and patients at the end of February and has conducted ‘three times’ more swabs on average, which ‘may explain a fair chunk of it’. A total 61 people in Barrow have fallen victim to coronavirus, giving it a death rate of 91 for every 100,000 – one of the worst outside of London. Figures show that Cumbria is also home to the area with the third highest infection rate. South Lakeland – east of Barrow-in-Furness – has a rate of 488 cases per 100,000 people.

honcho do you think the govt have chosen "herd mentality" as a policy?
Report truehoncho May 14, 2020 9:26 AM BST
I think the government is just totally reactive at the moment. I think they are out of their depth and the way they (and everyone else in fairness) has allowed the country to sink into hysteria is limiting their options. I am convinced the NHS has told them they over reacted and the Bank of England has told them that they are looking at the worst recession ever (since 1706). They still have Brexit and the other economies that matter are further forward than us. I think between a rock and a hard place doesn't get anywhere near describing their situation. I have no clue if they even have a policy other than wait and see.

It seems insane that covering/masks are not mandatory on the public transport system..is every other country wrong?
Report truehoncho May 14, 2020 9:48 AM BST
I think arguing about masks is a bit mute. A bit like moving the deckchairs on the Titanic. You shouldn't be anywhere near public transport if you are vulnerable or in contact with vulnerable people.
Report sofiakenny May 14, 2020 9:50 AM BST
Fully agree with that honcho..however we both know that will not be the case in reality.
Report truehoncho May 14, 2020 10:01 AM BST
Well that is just the point. We have been locked down for 6/7 weeks. Whats been happening in that time, nothing. They should have been planning for the end of lock down. We have a crazy situation that we are extending the furlough at its full 80% for everyone. That's madness. We should be putting our resources towards the vulnerable and those that are not at risk should be back at work earning their money. Pubs hotels and restaurants not to mention sporting facilities should all be fully open. If you are not at risk it isn't going hurt you. The vulnerable shouldn't feel the need to get on public transport or anywhere else that is risky for that matter. We have this stupid senseless argument about a second peak. Who cares about a second peak if we are protecting the ones that are hurt by it? Not me anyway.
Report 1st time poster May 14, 2020 10:35 AM BST
the so called vulnerable has gone from 2 million to probably 20 million as more is known a 3rd of the population, their on about hielding bame people at work, men twice as likely as women, obese, how do you shield a 3rd of the country
Report 1st time poster May 14, 2020 10:40 AM BST
even if your a so called young braveheart who needs hospitalising with virus but no bame nhs worker is allowed to transport you to hospital, treat you whilst there, etc, getting a non bame, obese nhs worker to treat 1000,s of people is like winning the lottery
Report truehoncho May 14, 2020 10:41 AM BST
I think that's nonsense personally. If that was the case the death rate would be massive, it just isn't. Every day another scare story with no evidence to back it up. The evidence is clear 85% are old and have underlying conditions. Who cares men are twice as likely as women, the important factor is how likely are women. Twice as likely as very unlikely is still not very likely.
Report 1st time poster May 14, 2020 10:49 AM BST
so you think bame people on frontline who are over 4 times more likely to die should be told just to get on with it, imagine your job where nearly 400 have died and your over 4 times more likely to be one of them and your told to jog on
Report truehoncho May 14, 2020 11:01 AM BST
I was responding to your first post. I am not interested in silly twisting word games with you or anyone else. Everyone working on the front line is more at risk because they are treating people with symptoms and if you are are symptomatic you shed more virus. If you have been identified as vulnerable you need to be made aware of the risks and make a decision accordingly. Are you telling me that if you have been identified as being significantly more vulnerable you can then say 'I want to continue to go to work so lock everyone else down and stop them going to work'. Total nonesense.

So 1sttimeposter, what if the government said something like this ' The economy is crashing, we need to get back to work. Everyone other than the vulnerable go back to work. Everything open up. This will cause pressure on NHS so for the next 6 months all front NHS staff that go to work have their wages doubled tax free' I worked this out to costing the country about £10 billion at the most. I think everyone would go to work.

With respect to wearing masks there is a different philosophy in Bavaria (i'm in München). It's compulsory to wear them on all forms of public transport and you will not get served in a shop/restaurant (take-away) without wearing one, in fact others in the queue will chastise you.

Shocked who would have thought.........

The number of people becoming infected with coronavirus each day in London has fallen to 24,

The rate of infections in England also appears to be slowing, according to modelling by Public Health England and the University of Cambridge's MRC Biostatistics Unit.

Data shows that the R value across England is 0.75, firmly under 1.0 - which the prime minister specified as a requirement for the continued easing of lockdown measures in the coming months.

The R value is shorthand for the reproductive rate of the virus.

The North East and Yorkshire are 0.8, the South West is 0.76, the North West is 0.73, the South East and East of England are 0.71 and the Midlands is 0.68, according to the research.

London's average rate has fallen to 0.4, meaning that for every 10 people who are infected, they are likely to pass it onto four people.

The figure also means the capital has gone from being the epicentre of the UK outbreak to having the lowest rate of infection in England.
