At the back end of last year they were offering 4/6 about the Euro and Pound reaching parity before Dec 31 when there was absolutely no chance of that happening. Now they're offering 4/1 about the inventor of the vaccine against covid 19 receiving the Nobel Prize in 2020. In neither case has the lay been available. I doubt whether anyone in the World, apart from the American Chump, has suggested that a vaccine will be available before the middle to end of 2021, so Betfair want us to bet on something that can't happen.
At the bottom of the same page as their wonderful offer are the immortal words: PLEASE GAMBLE RESPONSIBLY! ARE THEY EFFIN JOKING? This kind of BS makes my blood boil. Take the bet down Betfair and refund anyone that you've laid, or are you really just a bunch of parasites?

Ok then...with every will something happen YES...there should be a NO...

If something is 4/1 to happen an offer of NO at around 1/6 is more than fair to everyone.

They are taking a cut with an overround, and in the process giving the punters what they deserve, a CHOICE to whether something will or wont occur.

The nobel prizes are issued on the 10th December this year.   Although a covid-19 vaccine is some time away from being "generally available", it is feasible that a cure could be found very quickly and limited testing proves positive.   That in itself would be a breakthrough.  No need for the month of mandatory testing and manufacturing to award the prize.

Not saying it is a good bed but perhaps not impossible?

Scientists at the University of Oxford say they should have at least a million doses of a coronavirus vaccine by September this year.

The UK government, which is backing the project, said there were "no guarantees" and it was not possible to put a date on a vaccine.

The first patients are expected to take part in the Oxford trials next week.

However, it is still too soon to know whether it will be either safe or effective.

It isn't just a case of get a million doses in September and then rolled out - now it may well be fast tracked and ready for October, but with the lack of all the health and safety testing and long term effects would they want to be giving out the Nobel in December for it? Ummmmmm - they offer the other horses or greyhounds in the race don't they...So you can bet on every outcome.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........The bookmaker determines what he wants to lay not you and if you don't like that way of betting then just bet on the exchanges.
Report Magic__Daps April 21, 2020 10:23 AM BST
You asked why they don't offer prices on horses not to win, I answered that perfectly (they do by pricing up the rest of the field). If it was a 2 horse race then they would both be priced up wouldn't they (unsure the last time there was a no offers race). Imagine there wouldn't be any uproar at all if a 2 horse race was priced up as 4/1 the outsider (who in theory should be 100/1 chance), and no betting on the other.

Ps - the market isn't on the exchanges is it, which shows exactly what a carve up it is.
Report sparrow April 21, 2020 10:36 AM BST
It isn't on the exchanges because it's not a proper or serious bet. You are wanting to bet on something not happening that is a lay and bookmakers will tell you that is their domain not yours. If you're wanting to offer odds then you do it on an exchange that's the way it is whether you like it or not.
Report Magic__Daps April 21, 2020 11:15 AM BST
It has nothing to do with the exchange. You mentioned the exchanges where there isn't a market, pretty much proving the point that is a complete con job as it would probably show the true price.

The point is they are offering a one way market which is so underpriced it is unbelievable. Yet you seem happy enough that they can do that basically because it is up to them what they lay and if we don't like it then tough. As I said you don't get a 2 horse race like that as per your example - so what is the difference?

For example would you be happy if it was say a 2 horse race with Frankel v Bullet train and Bullet train was offered at 4/1 only (with no exchanges)?
Report sparrow April 21, 2020 12:29 PM BST

Seriously WTF.

1. I hardly bet with bookies as I cannot get on so it is generally pointless trying to in the first place (but well done on so say knowing exactly how I bet), I generally stick up for punters who cannot get on with them because of their "mugs only" policy. That has nothing to do with this market whatsoever, as I have no interest trying to bet in this market.

2. We both know why it isn't available?? I certainly do, it's because it is a complete con job, yet you seem to be saying it isn't and and it is fine to offer only one option on a 2 way market. It is disgraceful and shouldn't be allowed.

3. Would you be happy with bookies only laying one horse in a 2 horse race at a 20th of the price as per my example?

Of course it's a con job and where have I said it isn't?  I think no more about bookmakers practices than you do and refuse to give them any business and couldn't care less what they offer. You say it shouldn't be allowed but people on the whole are quite satisfied to continue betting with them and as far as I'm concerned there are fsr more important things to be concerned about than silly bets such as this.

It is not a bookmakers primary goal to offer prices on any event that directly reflect the likelihood of that outcome occurring. It would be much more accurate to say that they offer odds that they want the customer to take to enable the bookmaker to make a profit.
