there were some cracking horses in that field...just watched the nexy year on youtube...Henbit from Master Willie...heard it on the radio but I think that's the first time ive seen it...incidentally just listened to Peter Bromley's Troy commentary..he tipped him the previous evening on radio 2.."I suggest Troy"...commentary great to listen to
Somehow don't think youll be running a quiz about the 2020 Derby!

Wouldn't have the inclination to be honest, probably an age thing, today's crop and indeed those for the last couple of decade's do not get me excited in the same way memories of the old times still can, be lucky if there is any racing before the end of July would be my current guess, so it won't be an issue...!

This is where mostly "lead on" got to with a little input from rooster and AIS

I had thought that with lead on and AIS cracking the identity of the race that the answers would be easily guessed, but maybe I over estimated peoples memories, after all 1979 isn't that long ago is it....?

Cork - I don't understand what you're asking in some of the questions eg. Q7 - which horse refused to race..in a race in which Hardgreen ran?
I'll have a guess at Jellaby - I seem to recall a troublesome grey horse who used to run in his grade at that time.
These have got me fcuked...I think we'll need some clues like 3,2,4 for Son Of Love.

gibberish, by solving the anagrams you then move onto the questions, lead on already answered Q1 which identified that the anagrams relate to the 1979 Epsom Derby which was the 200th won by Troy, all the other questions then relate to said race and runners, the numbers on the anagrams being the saddle cloths the respective horses carried ie no number 10 or 21. Q3 was also answered by lead on

Fack me! Am I slow or what? I can get the odd anagram (I got three...without having a clue) but understanding the question is my biggest flaw Just realised another clue then...they'll be alphabetically numbered as they carried the same weight so that should help a bit.

Yes they are the only anagrams to get and not surprisingly three of them were 500/1 shots which helps explain why they are more difficult to remember as we probably all ignored them on the day. Stoute is correct but Easterby is wrong

I'd say Vincent O'Brien, but I can't remember who he trained in that race...none of them so far ring a bell.
Since you gave me the 'Prince' bit for the second word, it's gotta be Saracen Prince...but I've never heard of it.
Who's the Northern trainer...was it a 500/1 shot you mentioned?
I'm embarrassed for not understanding the thread...that's what happens when you jump in half way through.

No need to be embarrassed, you have answered more than some Saracen Prince and VOB are correct so you have two of the trainers now, and yes the Northern trained horse was a 500/1 shot, the guy who trained it was based in Bishop Auckland

I have a vague recollection that Bishop Auckland was a jumps stable but it's not coming to me - I'm guessing that's not just the Northern horse but the Champion Hurdle winning trainer.

Never heard of him - I'd only been into racing about a year at that point and I can still remember quite a bit, though I can't recall Hardgreen's colours at all.

PS - I got mixed up earlier with Hardgreen about a horse being left in the stalls...was I dreaming about Jellaby or is that correct? I have a very vague memory of Jellaby being riderless in a race
Thanks Cork - no recollection at all.PS - I got mixed up earlier with Hardgreen about a horse being left in the stalls...was I dreaming about Jellaby or is that correct?I have a very vague memory of Jellaby being riderless in a race
Jellaby unseated Brian Taylor when looking all over the winner in the 78 Lockinge at Newbury, Don ridden by Brian Rouse and trained by Bill Elsey from up north being the beneficiary of Jellaby's waywardness

GTFI 8. Lake City! I can remember he was half decent so he definitely wouldn't have been one of the 500/1 pokes and I don't think he was Vincent's either...Paul Kellaway's?
I'm absolutely out of gas on the others...when are we gonna find out?

well done gibberish, can't disclose the trainer as it refers to one of the questions, I will tell you that Paul Kelleway did have a runner but not that one and to put you out of your misery so you do not have nightmares I will reveal one of the unsolved anagrams 2) Chetinkaya, the other relates to a question though, I have to retire now as I am up at 4 but will give all the answers tomorrow afternoon, sleep well...!

Apologies lead on Q7 wording is a little ambiguous it should have said trained a Champion Hurdle winner, so the guy you are referring to is not included in the four.
Tony Shead is indeed correct for Q2, well done
