Unfortunately, The Randox Health Grand National Festival will not take place between Thursday 2nd and Saturday 4th April 2020.
Following the Government’s new public health guidance regarding avoiding social contact and stopping non-essential travel, and its statement that emergency services are withdrawn from supporting mass gatherings from Tuesday 17th March, we have decided that it is no longer appropriate to stage the event.
Please be assured that Aintree Racecourse operates a full refund policy in the event of any raceday not taking place. Refunds will be automatically processed within 14 working days. If you’ve booked hospitality, our team will be in touch shortly.

Oh well, time for our local bookmakers to close down for good. We had 5 then within 6 months of 2019 became two and the surviving two are empty at the best of times. A part of our high road I've no time or sadness for. For us, they will be gone very soon.

Given the smaller Amounts MATCHED - from 1.18 Downwards -
It is obvious that somebody (quite probably just one person - given the nature of the Price Matches) - Put in a BACK of 'NO' of around £22,000 - and 'got the lot' from around 1.2 down - or even higher.

Must have been the cost of securing the perimeter of the racecourse once Boris said that other gatherings would not get the support of the emergency services.

When the French are in lockdown and the police and army patrol the streets you know its serious and you kind of get an idea of where we will be in time. I don't see the french way being played out here so much with such draconian measures but its inevitable anything that gathers people in one place will be off-limits. The question is how long this might last. For business the economy and jobs it is a very serious matter.

So the racecourse were unable to fund the meeting going ahead? They were unwilling to pay for private services? Is that the situation?
Why would Fairyhouse or Punchestown be any different? Presumably, they will soon be called off as well?
In fact if we can't stage important meetings why not just call all racing off for 6 months?

Do we really want 20 million people watching the grand national and seeing a 4 mile slog with whips out at the end of it and a fatality or two thrown in? Not worth the risk. However, there is no reason the Craven and Guineas meetings can't go ahead behind closed doors, if people can still go shopping or use tube.

Its what you call unnecessary mass gatherings. Other measures will no doubt come in place within a time frame but the National is not something that is important when Public Health England has a duty of care to the public. Transport right now is a hard call because you effectively shut down everything and the whole economy goes into lockdown with huge ramifications

No - it could have gone ahead behind closed doors like other current meetings but once Boris said he wouldnt commit emergency services to other (public) sporting events the security costs of keeping us all out of Aintree via private a security firm proved too expensive imo ...

It could have gone ahead behind closed doors but I think we must await a press release from Aintree first to know precisely what the actions taken were based upon

If this decision has been taken purely in the interests of public health then that is absolutely fine but if it has anything to do with financial implications then it isn't quite so fine. It is a sport that is awash with money.

The decision appears to have been made very quickly as well almost as if it was case of if the Prime Minister says this then it's off. Was there any alternative strategy?

Sorry onlooker, I admit to not looking at the top. So its a range of reasons and not one specific reason even if you can pick what one you prefer. I think it is just an overall better decision to just cancel and wait for further developments

Ooh, that's harsh. I remember at Sandown in the foot and mouth outbreak when you had to walk over disinfectant mats on entry and all the ladies in heels were walking around them.

With all the bad news and so little for people to do, I would have thought that the pluses of having a "closed" Grand National Day (even if other days were lost) for public morale would outweigh the negatives.

where we,re predicted, likely, possibly be in 4 weeks time any person who even thought, game played hiring private paramedics to protect jockeys taking them away from saving lives, should be put against a wall, and shot, imo,or forced to put the ppe on and help in hospital emergency units

Wouldn't it have been a couple of weeks and isn't it a lack of beds and ventilators which is the biggest problem?
Could the system have coped for a few hours for three days if the will was there? You would have to be closer to the situation to answer that question yes or no. Anything else is purely individual speculation.
At the moment the biggest danger appears to be the rugby scrums going on in supermarkets up and down the country.
