Important Information
Unfortunately, The Randox Health Grand National Festival will not take place between Thursday 2nd and Saturday 4th April 2020. Following the Government’s new public health guidance regarding avoiding social contact and stopping non-essential travel, and its statement that emergency services are withdrawn from supporting mass gatherings from Tuesday 17th March, we have decided that it is no longer appropriate to stage the event. Please be assured that Aintree Racecourse operates a full refund policy in the event of any raceday not taking place. Refunds will be automatically processed within 14 working days. If you’ve booked hospitality, our team will be in touch shortly. |

Oh well, time for our local bookmakers to close down for good. We had 5 then within 6 months of 2019 became two and the surviving two are empty at the best of times. A part of our high road I've no time or sadness for. For us, they will be gone very soon.

Run it on the Autumn race day Sat 7th Nov ...

Given the smaller Amounts MATCHED - from 1.18 Downwards -
It is obvious that somebody (quite probably just one person - given the nature of the Price Matches) - Put in a BACK of 'NO' of around £22,000 - and 'got the lot' from around 1.2 down - or even higher. |

Just had my anti-post money on National refunded.

Must have been the cost of securing the perimeter of the racecourse once Boris said that other gatherings would not get the support of the emergency services.

When the French are in lockdown and the police and army patrol the streets you know its serious and you kind of get an idea of where we will be in time. I don't see the french way being played out here so much with such draconian measures but its inevitable anything that gathers people in one place will be off-limits. The question is how long this might last. For business the economy and jobs it is a very serious matter.

WHY ARE MILLIONS LIKE SARDINES ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT ,WHAT DIFFERENCE DOESA NYTHING MAKE ,IF YOU DONT STOP THAT ?
By:
So the racecourse were unable to fund the meeting going ahead? They were unwilling to pay for private services? Is that the situation?
Why would Fairyhouse or Punchestown be any different? Presumably, they will soon be called off as well? In fact if we can't stage important meetings why not just call all racing off for 6 months? |
By:
Intercity Trains Packed up and down the UK . Millions on the Tube and other transport , and stopping the national will Help
As for Pubs ![]() ![]() |
By:
Do we really want 20 million people watching the grand national and seeing a 4 mile slog with whips out at the end of it and a fatality or two thrown in? Not worth the risk. However, there is no reason the Craven and Guineas meetings can't go ahead behind closed doors, if people can still go shopping or use tube.

Lads, lads the world is coming to an abrupt end The National will be the least of our problems...........
By:
Its what you call unnecessary mass gatherings. Other measures will no doubt come in place within a time frame but the National is not something that is important when Public Health England has a duty of care to the public. Transport right now is a hard call because you effectively shut down everything and the whole economy goes into lockdown with huge ramifications
By:
No - it could have gone ahead behind closed doors like other current meetings but once Boris said he wouldnt commit emergency services to other (public) sporting events the security costs of keeping us all out of Aintree via private a security firm proved too expensive imo ...
By:
It could have gone ahead behind closed doors but I think we must await a press release from Aintree first to know precisely what the actions taken were based upon
By:
If this decision has been taken purely in the interests of public health then that is absolutely fine but if it has anything to do with financial implications then it isn't quite so fine. It is a sport that is awash with money.
By:
That is a very fair assumption to make
By:
The decision appears to have been made very quickly as well almost as if it was case of if the Prime Minister says this then it's off. Was there any alternative strategy?

The Official Aintree Announcement - is what I posted earlier on the Thread ...
Following the Government’s new public health guidance regarding avoiding social contact and stopping non-essential travel, and its statement that emergency services are withdrawn from supporting mass gatherings from Tuesday 17th March, we have decided that it is no longer appropriate to stage the event. |

By:
Sorry onlooker, I admit to not looking at the top. So its a range of reasons and not one specific reason even if you can pick what one you prefer. I think it is just an overall better decision to just cancel and wait for further developments

theres a company in ireland whose business make up is 30% hand sanitisers and 70 % fake tan.for the next 10 weeks its 100 % hand sanitisers. maybe the aintree executive took their decision with this knowledge.nobody would want the beautiful ladies of liverpool to be on display without their orangeness.
By:
Ooh, that's harsh. I remember at Sandown in the foot and mouth outbreak when you had to walk over disinfectant mats on entry and all the ladies in heels were walking around them.
By:
i meant no offence.we all love the ladies of liverpool and the seffort to make their ladies day one of the best in the world
By:
Ladies day at liverpool is a blast............love the Liverpudlians...........spent years in London didnt even know my neighbours....u socialized with other Irish...........Weekends away were Manchester/Liverpool/Wales and of course gloucester nov/march......the odd sortie to nottingham/Derby if u hadnt got ur oats for a few weeks........in the 90s the North had f**k all but the people were salt of the earth
By:
its such a important fixture behind closed doors was the answer, money talks not worth them going ahead without all the money
By:
lets say theres a limit of 500 people(guidlines)allow 1 owner 1 trainer 1 groom. 1 jockey.. last year there were 129 runners.add photographers security ambulance service .sis tv .vets judge starter racecourse staff. the figures would not add up during the current pandemic.
By:
Poor Liverpool...imagine if they take the league away from them next.
By:
With all the bad news and so little for people to do, I would have thought that the pluses of having a "closed" Grand National Day (even if other days were lost) for public morale would outweigh the negatives.
