The all-weather jumps holds some fond punting memories. One of my finest ever bets was Cosmic Dancer over 2m6f on Southwell. 8/1 early and went off 9/4 I think. Also remember Lyn's Return running up a sequence at Lingfield trained by Rod Simpson.
I was at University in Nottingham in 1990 - Nottingham was always a great jumps course. I saw Coulton beaten there at 8/11 or 4/6 where he looked completely asleep in the paddock. A couple of years later I saw Alderbrook win a flat handicap off 77. |

Yes Nottingham was a great jumps tracks royal gait won there the season he became champion hurdler also remember uncle Ernie winning there before chasing home the brilliant remittance man in the arkle, uncle Ernie himself did win at the festival many years later not sure what race he won, earlier in the thread bookmaker numbers were mentioned back in the decade we are discussing there would be 4 rows of them for a midweek jumps fixture at Nottingham.

Last jumps meet i went to @ Nottingham held the running of the city trial hurdle. Champion Hurdle trial
Hcap hurdle won by Broadsword 84 ish?? under top weight trained by The DUke. Also i think on same card was either a novice chase or hcap chase won by Marnik on 1st outing for the legend M.W Dickenson having been previously trained by Neville Crump. |

Geoff broadsword was a strong favourite in the 81 triumph hurdle but was caught by an unconsidered outsider baron blakeney trained by an unknown West Country trainer called Martin Pipe
|
|
By:
MC Pipe won the City Trial Hurdle with Chatam, in 1989, with Jonathan Lower up. Nottingham in February was the perfect track for Chatam - flat, left-handed and soft ground. Under those conditions he was one of the best NH horses of his day. His best run was probably at Leopardstown in 1993, when he ran Jodami to a head at level weights in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, the pair a distance clear.

Screaming did he also run well in our Hennessy?
|

Won it!
I was at Towcester that day. Had ten fifties each way. Got me part of the way out of a right hole. Earlier on, Chatam put up two amazing performances on the clock at Newbury, winning the the 4yo handicap hurdle at the post-Cheltenham meeting by a distance, and a couple of years later a novices chase, again by a distance, both in hock-deep ground. I kept my own speed figures over the jumps for well over a decade, and those were the two highest figures I ever got over hurdles and fences. (I stopped compiling speed figures in the end, when everybody else started to take them seriously; for a hell of a lot of work, they had lost their value; but for a decade they were basically my edge against the world.) |

Just looked back at the horse screaming i had forgotten he won it the race I meant was in 94 when 5 th behind one man on good to soft, clearly he enjoyed running at Newbury,

Above - the Mail's report on Chatam's Hennessy victory.
It's funny now to recall the bafflement and derision that Pipe faced at the time for his use of a mobile phone. Similar contempt was reserved for his use of blood testing, an all-weather gallop, interval training, a weighing machine and an equine swimming pool. |

By:
I still have the same mobile phone I should think it will be worth a few quid one day.

I never really got on with Nottingham jumps Foxy, at the time had to attend 1 in 3, did the absolute minimum, much preferred Leicester , thought it was a proper jumps track attracted some good horses at one stage , sad to see the dross they get nowadays. Can remember a well known wealthy owner helicoptering in one day prob in the early 90's , think the horse he came for was Royal Derbi, the ring was alight that day ,plenty left behind!

Eider chase newcastle coming up soon february in 1998 domaine de prom and improving chaser trained by lavina taylor got in at 10-8 looked a good thing and was 9/1 mid week so availed to 150 ew , my best mate was doing well with barrpn horses also had a word for one of his at lingfield something baby, baby grand ?and was using 7lb claimer lady jockey kimberley hart who on her day was a seriously good rider he had heard they celebrated it winning the friday night before in a night club in northallerton but was told say nothing and be carefull backing it at Newcastle he told me 15 mins before the race by which time hed got a taxi outside to go to nearest bookies and i recall 200 ew at sp he also had 200 ew at sp on course shop split it in 2 100ew. He also backed domaine in the eider 100 ew and i had 150ew on his at lingfield, and another 100 ew on domaine at newcastle, Domaine jumped like a stag and was a serious horse.
Winning quite well but i just remember the commentator say hes fallen on the track so it wasnt clear at the time before or after the line we panicked thinking will the jockey weigh in if hes over the line, the sad truth was he collapsed after the line what a young great horse and id say a grand national winner written all over him only a 7 year old as well. Lingfield i seem to remember she rode a cracker and sp was 16/1 lol we still say why didnt we do the double it never crossed our minds. well all in cash we had to go we just had two much cash on us and that ride home was a memorable one with the winnings bought a gold rolex i still have and friend bought antiques and gold. Just trying to recall the one at beverley were 3 of us alone pulled of a 33/1 into 16/1 a story to that one lol will find the name of the horse the race was the henry needler 5f sprint, will find it .... |

C J 'Butcher' Hill hardly ever trained a winner in his life. He held the licence back then when the yard was getting all that success, but the training was being done by Tony Newcombe, who later set up on his own. Once he left, Butcher Hill reverted to his original form of one or two winners per year. The best horse they had together was Morgans Choice, who won the 1985 Chester Cup.
Know All, The race at Beverley is called the Hilary Needler. This thread now seems to have taken on a life of its own, bit like an over 60's coach trip to an RUK free day! I'll update with the article on February Week One next Sunday morning |

The hillary needler thats it theanorak listed race Beverley night meeting 1997 W kemp trainer horse Filey Brigg while its fresh in the mind .....
We were at York 13th May Filey brigg i seem to recall 12/1 outsider jockey keiren fallon i think 5 runners very small field id backed 2 in the race off it went and Filey Brigg hesitated and was 7-8 lengths behind at the start was still out the back with 1 furlong to go when you could see it running on without been whipped beaten 3.5 lengths watched the replay and concluded if getting away on level terms could have won it but no one seemed to agree and no write up in the press no hard luck story. So watched with interest where next, The henry needler 4 June night meeting a wednesday night with band on playing on cheap side i recall anyway it was 25/1 33/1 in the forecast different ground tonight and w Kemp not known for listed winners J quinn jockey. Went through every runner the previous night and still couldent believe the price if it got away with them it would not be far off, opened 25/1 went 33/1 all around the ring 3 of us 50 ew as we thought would not get a knock back at that then re group to see what happens , i went to leslie steel 50ew he would lay you but he was clever when you said your bet he would say what did you say then youd have to repeat it by which time the floor man had shot off to get the bet away of which he did, bit of a flurry saw it come into 20/1 where we went in again and it went 16/1. The race, it shot out in front kept on, i think it was a short head lol some things stand out and domaine de prom because it died just after the line and this one who was a no chance |
