I also find it amazing that this has attracted so much publicity. All she wore that differed from the other riders was a scarf under her helmet. I know it is seen as a cultural breakthrough but horses and racing have always been a part of most Moslem cultures.

"there were three PEOPLE in front of me when I started" - Do you mean jockeys? Sad
What do you mean jockeys - you do understand the concept of the race do you? I also find it amazing that this has attracted so much publicity. All she wore that differed from the other riders was a scarf under her helmet. I know it is seen as a cultural breakthrough but horses and racing have always been a part of most Moslem cultures. Because the vast maj of non muslims think women who wear a hijab (or similar) are on the extreme end of the religion, this is of course nonsense and in many cases is cultural and nowt to do with religion. I lived next to an Eritrean family in Bristol who 99% on here would call muslim (by their dress) but they were (very) Christian. In all the interviews i have seen she hasn't mentioned Allah or islam once, only when prompted by the (non muslim) interviewer and don't forget that here most women wouldn't go out without head coverings until pretty recently. |
