Betting and racing as an industry is so 'wholesome' in general of course, in comparison to people scrapping with one another Mischief

In all seriousness though, why are we surprised it attracts this rubbish? I agree though that police presence works though, for sure. The thugs scrapping don't usually bother if there's a copper stood near them.

Wasn't this sort of thing common in the inter-war period at Brighton in particular.

That was the race gangs salmon fighting over the territory as to who would be collecting the protection money. Darby Sabini's gang and the Birmingham mob which was still going on into the 1950s with Jack Spot and Albert Dimes. They would be the ones keeping order at the tracks!

Slippy, Dulwich eh! Bit more salubrious than Brixton, if you live in the village that is.

Did some of our under-age drinking in the pub there,The Crown And Greyhound think it was.

In those days the Police knew how to police. My local was the Dolphin on Sydenham High St.

until one day a bobby stuck his head round the door, walked over to our table, looked us up

and down bouncing up and down on his heels with his hands behind his back, saying absolutely

nothing. He didn't have to. He turned and left and we never went back until old enough.

There was a pub in Penge, can't remember it's name but it wasn't far from the Police Station.

All the under-age drinkers in the area drank there and the police knew that. There would be a

motorcycle cop on the street at closing time. The landlord would shout 'Time boys and girls

please'! The police didn't interveen and there was no trouble.

As for the drunks at racecourses. Most of them arrive p....d and the racecourse serves them

even if they are falling over. The way the bars are set up, few chairs and tables large open

standing areas means that staff have no way of controlling that. The management's quite happy

with the situation The more booze sold the better. As I've said on other threads they aren't in

the horse racing business they are in the catering business. The courses have no-one else but

themselves to blame for these brawls.

I went to Lingfield park saturday summer meetings last year, punch ups are common, the same with newmarket july course, you have low paid staff, walking around with ghostbusters packs on there back topping you up, you don't even need to queue at the bar,
until someone is killed, and IT WILL HAPPEN, the racecourses will carry on trotting out the same old lines of,working with the police, lessons will be learned, isolated incident, bla bla bla...
The only way to try and stop it is,to ban coaches getting into the car park until an 30mins  before the first race, and you can only drink in the bars, no taking your drinks outside, and if you have to queue for 30mins to get a drink, then don't bother, go outside and watch the racing, you don't know what your missing, thats how it use to be.

Football is much harder to police but they manage it most of the time, despite being spread often across whole cities with fans.
Racing fans are all in one place so should be easy enough.

i did not know they were called ghostbusters but yes your right there surely is no real need for them on racecourses and whilst they will not stop the whole problem it would be a start, and yes your right until somebody is killed the same lines will be trotted up.

foxy - I'm sure Haydock and Chester used to be run under the same banner . The difference at Chester is that they pack so many in you couldn't swing a cat or a punch . The first thing I realised yesterday was that Man Utd , Liverpool , Everton , Leeds nor Birmingham were playing .

dambuster - I used to cover the Friday evening meetings @ Newmarket . After the last it was straight to the car park and flee the scene lol . As for someone being killed , it has happened (Racegoer killed at both Newmarket and Newbury back in the 90's)and nothing has changed , just the usual rhetoric .

Personally luv a few drinks when im at the races.
Cider bar at Newton Abbot before and after the racing is great Fun Cool

But that sort of behavior at Haydock is not acceptable.
Shouldn't be drinking if you cant handle your Alcohol.

Easy answer is to take their licences to sell alcohol off them after say a 3rd incident. Happens to pubs.

It's actually quite comforting to know that the literary work of Graham Greene is still appreciated by many Cool

What's needed is a Police presence but, as on our streets, it isn't there. Why? Look to our Government which is interested in only one thing:corporate profit.

I live in South East London roggrain and apart from when I get a tube home and arrive at Brixton I could easily go say 6 months without seeing any police on the streets. Surely, especially on busy Saturday meetings/bank holiday meetings the racecourses could stump up for say 6 policemen walking around the track in pairs to keep order. It would hardly cost the tracks much and it would give the public some semblance of security. I stopped going to The July Course because of the gangs of drunks who had little if any interest in the racing. Just there to get hammered and little else.

What do you expect ? When May removes 20,000 plus police from the force, this is the price we pay !!

They stop round my way a lot and are a great bunch, leave their rubbish all over the place but tbh its best just to clear it up after them and not bother getting in their faces about it

When I was a kid someone tried to steal from them..... safe to say their house wasn't standing after put it that way

these arnt drunken punch ups, these young lads fists are leathel weapons ,they train, there,re on the bags 7 days a week,it always ends with these lads raising their hands in victory like a boxer, at the end of this fight you see the young lad in a white shirt celebrating with his mate because he,s caught the big, baldy bloke in the black suit and tie who was throwing punches at the start, flush in the jaw

the racecourses are useless.

Just take a couple of them round the back and work them over proper.

They won’t come back and word will spread not to f uck about at the racecouce again.

5 minutes work and this won’t happen again.

Make it a rule on a racecourse insurance policy, that all racecourses must have at least 20 police officers armed with pepper spray and stun guns at saturday meetings, otherwise racing cannot take place,or something along those lines.
By:

Yes I read Brighton Rock in my teens Reynard.
The mixture of gangsterism and Catholicism struck me as a bit odd at the time but I am older and wiser now.
That and The Duke's Children by Trollope are the British literary novels that best cover horse racing. That I have read that is. Esther Waters has been sitting on my bookshelf unread for at least 15 years. Whether I'll ever get around to it now is doubtful tbh.

Come racing !! £36 to get in, bags searched for contriband, drunken idiots fighting with a few old guys to police them (security more interested with stopping you going in private areas) and hiked up bar prices.

I would have thought many would want the old Jamaican old holburn legalised, but doubt they were on that yesterday and if they were they wouldn't have been too interested in fighting. I would love to know who the "plenty" are who would want the bravery powder legalised??

As I have said before about Haydock put all the piss heads in the centre of the course and let the proper racing fans watch from the stands Haydock is a great track its just 2 near Liverpool and Manchester I thought it might be bad with Liverpool Everton and Man U not playing betfair chase day in November was bad must have been at least 80% not interested in the racing

As uk courses go haydock is one of my favourites as is Chester but I rarely attend either these days at the weekend due to drunks & threat of violence.as for facts point about police numbers it would help if there weren’t so many police glued to the internet searching for hate crime.
