Good film. I was hoping that you were going to say they were showing The Rainbow Jacket, best racing film ever made. Compo stars as the crooked jockey who learns a working class kid how to become a jockey. Robert Morley, who owned some decent horses in real life, plays the grumpy head steward. Was this film that led Willie Carson to become a jockey.

I first saw this film as a pare-teen many years ago and it stuck in my memory all these years; I suppose I identified, at the time, with the idea that events could be somehow manipulated and controlled by sheer intensity. When I recently saw this film on DVD, it still struck a nerve and, as an adult, realized what a strong film it is and why it had been in my memory all these years. Because the file is so old, many of the mannerisms in the movie appear quaint now, but the themes are timeless; sensitive kids sensing parental dysfunction and taking it upon themselves to try and "fix" things. It's interesting to note that John Mills, then a staple in English films, produced the film. I would recommend this film to anyone with a penchant for psychological drama of the old school.

I first saw this film as a pare-teen many years ago ------------ What is a, "pare-teen" ? Only thing I can find on google is ... pareteen is not a valid scrabble word. |

The Rainbow Jacket - 1.15pm this coming Sunday 30th on Talking Pictures
|
|
By:
Great old film at 4.15pm on Talking Pictures "The Smallest Show on Earth". 1957.
When Matt Spenser (Bill Travers) and his wife, Jean (Virginia McKenna), inherit a small cinema, the Bijou, from a distant relative, they are shocked to find a decrepit building that comes with a group of aging employees. Matt and Jean try to sell the Bijou to Albert Hardcastle (Francis De Wolff), the owner of a large nearby cinema, but he gives them a lowball offer. Instead, they decide to open the theater, using a few clever marketing schemes to gain viewers at the expense of Hardcastle. |
