A friend of mine who is a trader on here also has a Purple account which he uses just occasionally for conventional betting. Yesterday he discovered that the purple account had been hacked and around £800 had been taken using something called Neteller. He informed Purple who are now investigating but cannot stop the withdrawal due to the hacker using neteller. One other strange thing is the hacker actually had a bet on American Football for some reason. I wondered if anyone on here would have any thoughts or advice on this. By the way I can assure people this was not my account if you were already thinking that.

good morning sparrow

cant help you with your question but yesterday i was watching a programme about on line fraud i was amazed how big it has become and in many cases we have no help coming from anywhere ,i am not very well up on technology but the way i see it if its taken from one account and put in another then it should be simple to get back.
Report Trusty December 7, 2018 8:11 AM GMT
It should be very simple really. A customer should be able to enforce that deposits and withdrawals can only come from one account when they set-up the account. This would stop all of these scams. If you change your bank account, then you need to go through a change program that takes 7 days to implement including emails and letters to the account address.

Why they don't offer this already, I am not sure?
Report DenzilPenberthy December 7, 2018 8:15 AM GMT
The amount of personal info we've got to send to some of these companies are likely a hackers dream should they be given/gain access and it's getting worse, including photos of personal documents, bank cards/statements,photo ID's/passport/driving license, household bills and more.

Good morning foxy.........I would have thought so too Foxy but it seems that a facility such as Neteller can take just 12 hours to complete the transfer unlike the normal debit card transaction which takes days. I can only assume that the hacker will have further transferred the money to another account. I have a purple account myself but fortunately have never used it.
Report DenzilPenberthy December 7, 2018 8:16 AM GMT
We don't know how much info the workers at these companies can see and control if able there'll always be thievery.
Report sparrow December 7, 2018 8:18 AM GMT
Trusty, that plan seems to be the right idea to me but people are always wanting these fast withdrawals and numerous ways of doing so.
Report foxy December 7, 2018 8:41 AM GMT
i have had a purple account for many years and so far have never had a problem.

denzel mentioned how much stuff we need to tell these people i could not agree more ,even in every day life you go and buy 1/2 lb of sausages they ask for your email address.

I don't think Purple has Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on login?

In which case I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving £800 in a Purple account.

Timely reminder that BF does implement 2FA, and if you keep enough money on here to care about losing it, you probably should turn it on.
Report sparrow December 7, 2018 10:30 AM GMT
It's made me decide to implement 2FA longbridge.

And I wonder if the 'bet' on American Football was putting money up at a silly price in an otherwise empty market for the hacker or an associate to take using their own accounts?
Report ribero1 December 7, 2018 10:48 AM GMT
Interesting re the American football bet, about 7-8 years ago I rang BF from Cheltenham on champion hurdle day for a bet and you have to give account details, mothers maiden name etc,the conversation must have heard by a scammer as a couple of days later they had to suspend the account as they'd used it to have a bet on an obscure Ice hockey game in the middle of the night taking out roughly £200 from memory but then there was another ice hockey bet for the exact same stakes which lost and the money was back in and the account with no negative equity.
BF never explained anything although I wasn't too fussed as it didn't cost me anything and just had to change passwords etc and obviously never rang through for a bet again.

On behalf of Purple as this thread has come to our attention and it is of concern that it is being discussed on an open forum.

We can't comment on the specifics of an individual account case but can state categorically that there has been no data breach of the site and that 2 factor authentication is available to customers. Customers are responsible for ensuring that their login details are not passed to third parties and are advised to change their passwords regularly.

Our customers can rest assured that their funds are secure.

Many thanks

That is interesting longbridge and I have sent an email to my friend with a copy of your post.
Ribero......Thanks for your response also.

Broadway Joe - it is being discussed openly because others have accounts with Purple therefore it could be a concern to other punters. The same happened with Betfair account(s) over the years and have also been discussed - I swear I also remember the same thing happening and again with a bet on American Football?
Report sparrow December 7, 2018 11:39 AM GMT
That is the point Magic Daps and they seem surprised that we should be discussing the security of our accounts on here. I have a purple account as do many others and this is a serious issue for us.
Report Magic__Daps December 7, 2018 11:46 AM GMT
I have one as well sparrow. My point is the same has happened with BF over the years and has been openly discussed on here too, it isn't as if it is being allowed just to have a go at a competitor, it is only a concern to Purple (as Joe put it) as it is putting them in a bad light. If there is nothing to worry about I am sure he will report on here what the issue was?

I had an attempted fraud on my bank account using an email address I use exclusively for betting related accounts so there most probaly is data breaches at bookmakers.  I don't have many accounts left now but I try to use Papal wherever I can.
Report equine flew December 7, 2018 11:47 AM GMT
I am guessing the American Football angle is because it is a overnight event (i.e. when this sort of thing happens and the user is less likely to notice) and also this event would have reasonable liquidity.

I am sure on the betfair thread, a bet was placed and the money was lost and not withdrawn.   The inference was made, that if the bet had won, the winnings could be withdrawn leaving the original balance and unless you studied your P/L, you may not be any the wiser.
Report sparrow December 7, 2018 11:49 AM GMT
6 posts in 11 years leads me to believe that the purple official may not return to report on the issue.

This is exactly what happened on my account years ago (Betfair). Big bet on Djokovic which luckily for me won.
Winnings withdrawn to Neteller and original stake left in the account.

Now use the 2 Step which I'd recommend setting up if you haven't already.

a hacker can make multiple deposits from paypal and lose the money as you authorised this initially.
