For instance if you were a miler on the Flat would you be a doubtful stayer over 2m at Cartmel or is it a track you could get away with it?

I'm guessing you need to stay or is it the long run in that makes it look like horses don't stay?

Thanks in advance.

@The Fear

I only rode on the flat, but this will a horse stay over hurdles better on tighter tracks and all that is actually a lot of nonsense.

I have ridden 10f horses on the flat who are keen, pull hard and effectively don't quiet see out their races, yet over a mile, despite relaxing better they don't have the finishing speed to be competitive.

The same I have ridden 6f sprinters, who will switch off like lambs and just wake up when you send them.

What I am saying is it's not so much the distance or the track, but it's the horse. If a horse switches off and relaxes it will most likely stay most trips, as it will only come under pressure in the final 1/5th of a race over hurdles in a genuinely run race.

It's why you see some horses running over 6f and 7f in early career end up running over 8-12f later on in their career.

I've seen 1m 4f flat horses not stay 2m over hurdles and also ridden sprinters who have gone on to stay 2m over hurdles.

It all comes down to each individual horse, rather than the trips it's ran over.

thanks for that domino I got lambasted on here last year for suggesting that 30,.40 years it was regular for sprinters to run in 2 mile hurdles at Catterick etc

Red Rum
Report domino14 • August 27, 2018 10:29 AM BST
Indeed Delta a winner of a 5f seller at Aintree on debut (well dead heated) and a two times winner over 7f at two. A useless fact a lot of people don't know is when Red Rum was a 3yo, he was looked after and ridden at home by Lee Mack (the comedian).
Report domino14 • August 27, 2018 10:31 AM BST
It may have been later than a 3yo actually. It's in Lee's autobiograhy, he said when he was an 11yo on his school holiday's he helped out at Ginger McCain's yard and used to ride Red Rum for walks and trots around Southport sands.

would of thought the most important factor which noone has mentioned is shirley depends on the pace of the race.
Report Andrew in Sweden • August 27, 2018 10:53 AM BST
Not sure about staying, but the horse needs to be well balanced, it's like a greyhound track except for the run-in, longest NH one in the UK.

mostly dogs running there anyway..dont often see anything decent.

Or Patricia’s Hope who my Sister Brenda was the kennel girl for when she worked for Adam Jackson.

Not only did it do the Triple Crown (equaling Mick the Millers record) winning the English, Welsh and Scottish Derby’s in the same year but came back the following year and won the English Derby again.

Andrew

That’s a bit of information about me that’s surprised you.

Happysandwich,

I was at White City when Patricia's Hope won on both occasions. I saw the Derbys from Dolores Rocket up to Sarahs Bunny. Not sure if i saw John Silver a year earlier. Best track ever, i was a regular there (lived 30 odd mins away) also at Slough and Wembley.

I had greyhounds at Slough and Reading with Paddy Pierce and Terry Atkins.

Not that wise, Dom. Booked it late and couldn't get a place near the course, but would have gone for somewhere in Lancaster in hindsight.

Would have been better off staying in Kendal or Windermere or somewhere in the South Lakes region, both much closer to Cartmel.

Adam Jackson trained at the Clapton track to win the 1972 race. Clapton trainers were also responsible for 4 winners in 6 years during the 60s

Sandwich, I too was there for the final when Patricias Hope beat the 1/3 fav Super Rory.
Rory esily beat Patricias in the semi, but got murdered in the final.
Rory was the son of my favourite greyhound - Yellow Printer.
Report sparrow • August 27, 2018 1:01 PM BST
Yellow Printer was a fantastic dog also trained at Clapton by John Bassett. Possibly the best dog never to win the English version.

Fair point about the occasional 1m4f flat horse that doesn't stay 2m over hurdles.

In a juvenile hurdle though personally i'd rather have a 60-rated flat horse who stays 1m4/6f than a miler rated 70/75.

The pace of the race is interesting because as someone said to me once they go faster on flat tracks (say like Stratford where they can get strung out) so you still need to be able to stay the trip.

Thanks for the replies.

Correct.

And they were all based at Northaw where stable staff including my Sister had accommodation.

Andrew

The first Derby he won (1972) I was on the rails at the first bend (6 deep) with an Anti-Post slip in my pocket for a £50 Win double Roberto @ 4/1 to win the Epsom Derby and Patricia’s Hope @ 16/1.

The only thing I remember was the odds-on Fav Super Rory went arrse over head at the first bend and my mate banging me on the back shouting “The favourite - they’ve done the phucking favourite.”.

Didn’t know the result until they announced it on the ‘tannoy’ because I was looking straight down the track.

Happy Day’s

Happysandwich,

That was some bet with well over 4K return, a good few bob in those days, well done.

You must have been sweating on the photo Wink

Agreed sparrow, the first dog to break 29 secs for 525 yds.

A smashing story Happysandwich, funny thing is I was looking for some documents a little earlier and came across the Card for my first Greyhound . Many happy memories attached I might add, the night she won her first race was incredible. Myself and my wife and brother were due to attend H.Cross but me and her had a bit of a tiff and she never came. Tessie was out and gone from trap 4 and I screamed the whole race as she won by 6 . Wife got a lovely present, Brother got pissed, and I got one of the best memories of my life!.

It was life changing.

The other funny thing was I had to leave the stadium to find a phone box, to phone my Wife with the news.

Now I'm on your thread trying to win the £50 stake, but that's what happens when one gets old and Senile and your memories on the blink. Laugh

Correct again Sparrow.

We had dogs with John Coleman (who was best mates with Adam) at Claverhambury.
