Appreciate I am being wise after the event, and I did not back it, but the hoss was top rated RPR and top rated on official ratings (even before the 9lb age related allowance). Sometimes these TopsPeed ratings look simply too bad (OR GOOD!!!) to be true, and often are. No crit intended Onlooker, just an observation.

I follow speed figures and I place layed it.....I knew it all its previous runs it had run in slowly run races where it had no chance of achieving a high figure......when a horse like this runs I always take a look at the pedigree and to be fair she as a lovely pedigree but I just thought it was worth a place lay go at the price.

Poet's Society by just a pound - Not 34 lb 'well -in'
- as opposed to SEA OF CLASS - 34 Lb 'well-OUT'. You would have to back EVERY SINGLE selection - in order to catch a typical 'out of the clouds' Johnston head-scratcher.... and then, you would simply go skint. |

its all price relative imo but that aside the big thing to understand is opportunity cost
just because a horse hasn't posted a big figure doesn't mean it isn't capable of it, it could be it hasn't had the opportunity to do so (been in slowly run races) cardiff understands it imo |

1st winner clear top rated as well
2nd race winner 1lb off top rated (was 50s on here) by all means ignore them or bet with or against them if you see fit |

Wonders - I am in violent agreement with you, but where and how do you have Red Balloons 1lb off top rated. Actually I had a small EW interest but this was not the reason.

red balloons TS 98 (highest in the race TS 99)

posted 76 @ notts and as carrying 8-6 +22 for the 10st adjustment...makes 98

A ha - I printed my York Racecards from RP last night. Shows Oberyn M at 98. Celebrity Dancer and Kodyanna at 97 AND Red Balloons at 91. A lesson here of course is that these are updated overnight. I did know this, but did my bets last night as I was on Grandad and Gardening duty today.
For a long shot, RB was remarkably well weighted on adjusted official ratings and wasn;t too shabby on RPR either. |

Shows what a load of hokum speed figures are if a quality Irish Oaks winner is 34 pounds inferior to anything other than Pegasus ..........

Onlooker
![]() - I like it, it is a neat term to use when folks think you are disagreeing with them, when in fact there is no difference between the two positions. It's conciliatory and non confrontational but you retain your position. sixtwosix - it is not hokum, it is a speed figure, with all the obvious drawbacks that entails. |

six..........if an horse is a hold up horse running in 5 slow run races how do expect it to get a high speed figure..........you then have got to decide whether you think its capable of running an high figure.......I go to pedigree and this occasion should have made me not lay her but I decided that price outweighed the pedigree in such an high class class

As someone that took there own sectionals for years on the turf I can safely say using speed figures over 12f is fraught with danger due to the amount of slowly run races there are. This season I stopped taking sectionals on the turf (wasn't making it pay and was very time consuming) and started concentrating from 5f to 8f using speed figures as my main tool to find bets. Obviously there are still some slowly run races but overall they are much more reliable than over longer distances.

york (Rail movements: R1 & 2 +43y, R6 +36y) newmarket (Rail movements: R4 & 5 +21y) goodwood (Rail movements: R2, 3 & 6 +10y, R5 +13y) ffos las (Rail movements: R1, 2, 5, 6 & 7 +9y) thats just today and how can the courses calculate accurately rail movements its a pure guess what yds they have moved them, speed rating are a thing of the past they have ruined them

Speed figures are surely just part of the jigsaw - as far as Sea Of Class is concerned she had only run FOUR times - far too early to be making too many assumptions .....
|
|
By:
I only use speed figures and ive backed loads of winners that are bottom rated...... by looking at the pedigree of the horse
