...of cobalt is performance enhancing.

The statement of a qualified vet, and a former BHA director against present members of the BHA team none of whom is a qualified vet (to my knowledge). Who do you believe?

He is also a trainer and a professional windbag.

Isn't it just his opinion? Are you really saying that you know that the BHA don't take professional advice on this kind of subject?
Report telepathic • August 16, 2018 10:58 AM BST
So you will be the amateur windbag ?
Report impossible123 • August 16, 2018 11:04 AM BST
Words of a qualified vet any time if it satisfies my intellectual sophistication. The present BHA headed by Nick Rust do not inspire confidence - their high profile defeats/setbacks are testament to that.

If you like telepathic. Personally, I like to think I give an unbiased opinion. I have no connection to Johnston, what about yourself?
Report TheFear • August 16, 2018 11:11 AM BST
It is just an opinion and he did have an equally strong opinion on wind ops saying they didn't work. Skelton is just as successful as Johnston and he seems to love a wind op so who is right?

Whether cobalt works or not some trainers are using something that offsets fatigue - I've been watching racing racing for 40 years and I'm totally convinced of that.

DD..Is this opinion based on any professional qualifications or just a opinion based on "not liking the person" very much.?

You don't need any connection to proffer an opinion on a difference of opinion.

All opinions welcome. This is a forum, and not a fact based convection or conference. Chill!

Mark's gear pi$$es on Cobalt that's why he finds it somewhat ineffectual.

To answer the OP - I would be more inclined to believe the BHA.

As many on here know I am no fan of that organisation but their rebuttal, part of which says.......

"While cobalt is an essential trace element and is naturally present in the horse, when present at concentrations that exceed normal physiological parameters cobalt has the potential to activate the erythropoietin (EPO) gene, which increases the production of red blood cells and therefore may have the potential to enhance performance.
This is a view that is supported by significant academic and scientific research and has been agreed by the international racing community. As a result the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities adopted a raceday threshold for cobalt per millilitre in urine which has been implemented across major racing nations".

On balance, that is enough for me versus the opinion of one vet.

When did Johnston qualify as a vet Years ago i bet. i reckon things have moved on since then an he is not as up to date as the BHA experts
Furthermore if the Aussies are disqualifying trainers for using cobalt then there must be a deal of evidence that it enhances performance

Isn't his son Charlie a qualified vet too? Personally, I believe there is a tinge of a chance of performance enhancing if administered on race day or just before racing, but I'm more concerned about those horses not running on merit ie not trying, or fed loads of goodies (hay/food/water) prior to a race.
Report TheFear • August 16, 2018 2:03 PM BST
this piece seems to back Johnston up:

https://thehorse.com/111559/cobalt-use-in-racehorses/

The team found that administration had no effects on horses’ erythropoietin levels or red blood cell counts (both of which could improve oxygen-carrying capacity and, thus, performance) or any adverse effects at the administered dose.

Very true look at us,I'm currently tinkering with pre workout nutrition and changing my performance so aye imagine what could be done with a horse.

I do not care what they feed them as long as they keep winning; they could feed Mars bars fried in batter, for all I care. I wonder if that would be performance enhancing.

Whenever Mark talks grab yourself a large pinch of salt..or some earplugs.
