According to the various websites , the conditions were ok for the concert to go ahead but he couldn't get there via plane or helicopter -which begs the question-why didn't he get there at lunchtime rather than plan on an evening arrival.

I agree, I remember a few years ago Newmarket nights had two admission prices, one that included racing and another where you could only gain entry after the 5th race had finished. Then they had seriously bad weather and the concert was called off but racing went ahead as normal. They only refunded those who had the later admission tickets, which I thought was awful, as they were charging like £40 entry for a night meeting that would normally be £20, whilst later admission tickets were £25. Given the later admission price was £25, they should have refunded all people to that value. They got a lot of stick from people and soon scrapped the two price entries.

Eagle-eyed racegoers though wondered why Sir Tom couldn't make it from London whereas the trip north proved no problem for Oisin Murphy who won the 4.45 at Ascot and then travelled from Berkshire to win the 7.30

STJ probably wasn't leaving until 7.30pm to go from London to York, which would have taken less than an hour.
