Anybody remember that Channel4 (I think) - may have been BBC2 - documentary on the woman 'Pro-Punter' from London, a few years back.

It showed her, studying Form, in a darkened room, whilst, I seem to remember, smoking using a Bet Lynch type cigarette holder - She was a bit of a gothic-type/bohemian creature, all velvet curtains and the like.

The 'partner' was something of a wierd one - and they seemed an unlikely couple - as I got the impression that they 'batted for different teams'... An impression endorsed when I met them at the races one day.

I remember that one and her rather weird sidekick, but she was never a Pro Gambler although she claimed to be. Documentary showed her and weirdo having afternoon tea at the Ritz (as pro gamblers do....) and also going in a betting shop. She looked like an extra in that film The Great Gatsby. Very unusual, and him ! Most unlikely couple.

I am somewhat astounded that others have not posted that they remember the programmes... they were broadcast late 1980s, or early 1990s.

Not just a one-off - But, I think, it ran for 3 or 4 episodes.

The scene in the Betting Shop was excruciating - Mr Weird did not appear to know how to write out a bet, for her.

He appeared to be her flunkey.

The more I think back - the more I feel her name was Vivien.

Met them at Haydock races - in the Bar - But they were from London.

Somebody must know who they are.

i remember the programme onlooker but can not remember her name.

there was a female pro punter around in the 80s from the south manchester area called jackie paul her dad george was pretty close to alex bird,she lasted a few years at a time when there probably wasnt many who could make it pay full time unlike now when it seems everybody makes it pay,but she like many before and since started laying to people who knew more and went skint in the end.

years ago had a few greyhound with a female trainer... she would not  have a bean on the dogs , here game was the horses  … would not  blink a eye a  grand or 2 on her  nap bet  ..  had loads of accounts...lots got closed

Yes, you are right her name was Vivien and they were from London. Infact I still got the old video recording I done from that documentary. I took a few pics and will put them up - just waiting for betfair 'pending approval'.

Awaiting confirmation from TELL DEL that the 'Vivien Programme' was ALSO called The Racing Game... as definitely vastly different to the Programme descriptions in alun2005 BBC Links.

LOL - Shows what an impression Cumani and Hartington made on me, in the programme, if I predominantly merely remember Vivien and her hapless 'partner'. 

Still at a loss to imagine where they found her - and, even more so, then link her into programmes about the SERIOUS side of racing.

Yes it was definitely called The Racing Game, it covered a lot of sides to racing including punters,and the one that featured this Vivien lady was how a serious gambler operates, and she was claiming to be a pro or semi-pro.... whatever. Maybe she was but that is a bit hard to swallow.

I took 3 pics of her and this weirdo sidekick she had from this old video recording I got..... but still waiting for 'pending approval' from betfair so I can show them. And when they get round to it I will put them up.

Unusual couple to say the least but intriguing. And where they found her for this programme I have no idea.

The racing gets in the way I thought it was a poor meeting the ground not helping had a great time still and loved watching the World Cup final in the town.the best result I had all week was the text from Ryanair on Wednesday telling me our flight on Friday was cancelled,so I used the ferry for the first time and it’s different class altogether better experience,it’s the boat for me from now on.

Agnes Haddock , professional ironing lady who was a total guesser but won over 600 large on the scoop six about 10 years ago .

She's run out of steam since then.

Re that old documentary The Racing Game on TV, featuring Semi-pro gambler Vivien and her companion John. These few pics taken at Newmarket, in this scene she lost £50, she picked 2 horses but only backed one, it lost, and the one she didn't back won. But in another scene in a betting shop she did win £90.

Another part you see her in a darkened room with a cup of tea and a **** burning the midnight oil and studying form. She did have a very shrewd system, she would assess the trainer and give him marks out of 30..... assess the jockey and give him marks out of 10.... marks out of 20 for the distance.... marks out of 30 for the going.....overall form marks out of 40.... recent form marks out of 20. She would then total up and convert to a % figure which gave her a true value chance of each horse in a race. And she will only bet when the price is right, "it's called looking for value"

She did work for W.H1ll once and was shocked when a punter had 6 or 7 big bets which all won...... and they banned him.  When she asked her boss why they had banned him and he said, "We are not in the business of giving money away"

In that scene with her Bet Lynch cig holder, she was in the stand looking at the prices on the boards and giving hand signals to Mr Weirdo in the ring, telling John where the best price was.

There is another scene which shows her having afternoon tea at the Waldorf with John and her dance instructor.

When she was asked what her biggest win was she said, "The most I've ever won in a race, do you really want this, it was a thousand pounds"

onlooker When you mentioned the documentary on here I was pretty sure I still had it on an old video recording. They were certainly a bit of an odd couple, interesting/intriguing. I watched it again this morning, I had only recorded one of the series with her in it. A lot of these old programmes are on YouTube but couldn't find this one.
