Not been to Perth, Musselborough Hamilton Park, Kelso, Hexham, Newcastle, Pontefract, Ripon, Redcar, Yarmouth, Fakenham, Chester, Huntingdon, Ffos Las, Epsom, Brighton or Chelmsford. Been to all of the others in GB. As you might guess I live in the south west. I haven't been racing in Ireland but have been to Pompadour, Longchamp, St Cloud, Deauville and Chantilly all in the distant past. Also Finger Lakes!, Arlington, Belmont and Santa Anita in the states, Rio de J. and Sao Paulo in Brazil and Nairobi.

Mad .dog. I am determined to finish the job and do them all,I know what you mean when you speak about the food and drink , what i find most galling is the price of entry to courses for mostly poor racing...Driving in the U.k. can be a nightmare traffic wise , especially the motorways ..

Long time since I've paid full whack to get into a racecourse. Usually use Racegoer discount or more likely their free days. Also have Jockey Club bond so can use part of interest payments to buy tickets for their tracks, ARC's and York. Have now bought a Two Together railcard for me and mate which gets a third off rail fares.

About 20 tracks to go. Was due to tick Carlisle off on Thurs but emergency came up so had to forgo. Thankfully it was a Racegoers free day but lost money on train tickets. Thankfully they've another free day in Oct.

13 of that list, but I've jinxed Wye, Lanark, and Alexandra Park into closure! Have seen numerous others, but not on race days.

Other than that, Punchestown, Listowel and Killarney in Ireland, plus Philadelphia and Finger Lakes in US

I've been to every British racecourse several times - from 2005-2011 I worked for the Tote in a national role and had to go to every racecourse at least once a year. - then Fatfred got his mitts on it and I took redundancy.

Can I count Edinburgh and Musselburgh as two?
I never quite understand why people think so highly of Plumptom. It is compact and has quite good viewing. I was a member there for six years but let it lapse. Too many days of horrible ground despite their attempts to improve the drainage and a poor train service even from nearby Eastbourne especially on Sundays.

I used to like Ally Pally and had a dash across London to there from work in SW18 hoping to make it for the first race.

Gosh oldgit i frequently drive an hour and a half to get to Plumpton. Very good value food and drink and often exciting finishes as horses tire up the slope to the post.
Report blackbarn July 14, 2018 9:06 PM BST
Stephanie - I did Wye and Ally Pally but not Lanark regrettably. Mind you I did Lewes to make up for it.  Little recollection of it mind, aged about 6/7. Went on the bus with Uncle Jack from Barcombe.

Plumpton is an absolute gem of a racecourse, I love my days out there.
Report stephaniebot July 15, 2018 9:32 AM BST
Don't really remember Ally Pally, was taken there as a young child, and that was it. Lanark, and Wye were as a teen, so remember slightly more, but all a long time ago

Oldgit - as you were a member at Plumpton , do you remember 'Tony the Hat'?
Report workrider July 15, 2018 11:19 AM BST
My father R.I.P. told me a wonderful story about a night at Ally Pally, he had done his dough all night and had his last pound on the fav in the last. Standing beside him was a guy who was getting very excited as they came inside the final furlong, remember this was about 1959, the nearer the line they got the more excited this man became. He was jumping up and down as 2 horses crossed the line, one my Dads and the other his, a 33/1 shot. The 33/1 got up to beat the fav and the poor fellow fell over and dropped dead right beside my Dad . Turns out he had £2 on it and the return was huge for that time when money was tight indeed. My Dad decided that rather let the money go to waste he would go up to the bookie and collect his mates money. A sad ending to a night out for one of them but as my Dad said better in his pocket than the bookies...Call it Karma if you like but heading to work in Islington in 1971 my Dad collapsed and died also from a heart attack....
Report Blackrock July 15, 2018 11:23 AM BST
I think the 33/1 punter would rather your Dad had the money than stay in the bookies satchel.

Hurst Park was flat and NH. The Triumph Hurdle and a lot of other top races under both codes were run there.
Report posy July 15, 2018 8:57 PM BST
What a shame it closed down ; it was in a lovely location.

did47 does that imply the Triumph switched to Cheltenham around 1963 ?
Report blackbarn July 15, 2018 10:14 PM BST
Posy - The Triumph was first run at Cheltenham in 1965, with the last race at Hurst Park in 1962.  There was no Triumph in 1963 or 1964. As someone said several big races were run at HP - The Victoria Cup being one, transferred on closure to Ascot.

Myself and the Blantyre boys just speaking about this yesterday, will have to wait till next year..only three 'festivals' per year, I guess due to the distance from the training centres.  would the may, july or august festival have the best racing?

only seven weeks till Laytown/Kilbeggan/Navan - roll on!!

Rider 2324 post is about right.

Workrider

Didn’t go racing yesterday decided to stay in town for the football which was a good decision, got settled in the outside bar in stotts loads of Croatian and Frenchmen wearing there colours and singing there songs it was a fantastic atmosphere not a bad word all day and all night both sets of supporters hugging each other long into the night, the inside bar had Kerry and Galway on in that Irish sport plenty of colour there as well although all green and yellow,.hadnt realised what a big Croatian community there was in Ireland all good fun though I started the day not concerned who would win but by mid afternoon I was cheering on Croatia a great game the best final since 78.

Good morning Gordon

My guess is this place would be right up your street however there is a big danger of not actually getting to the racecourse.
Report Gordon63 July 16, 2018 10:25 AM BST
Morning Foxy - suspect Workrider may have given you inside info!! But you're probably not far off the mark..the saving grace is I'd probably drive from Cork Airport so would be stone cold upon arrival, unlike my travelling companions..
Report foxy July 16, 2018 10:34 AM BST
This is not my first visit Gordon and found it hard to split Galway and Killarney as a party town but after last night I have come to the conclusion in comparison Galway is just a sleepy village.
Report foxy July 16, 2018 10:38 AM BST
By the way it wasn’t just workrider a while ago we spoke about bars in the heymarket area of Edinburgh
Report Gordon63 July 16, 2018 10:47 AM BST
Yes I remember - proper mannies pubs or pubs with good malt whisky selection (Bow bar in Edinburgh current favourite) followed by jump racing stars from Peter Easterby/Michael Dickinson would be my chosen Mastermind subjects!  never been to Galway either, another one for the hopefully long days of semi-retirement, although probably not the Festival unless I can get accommodation in the town which based on past searches requires you to get the Jackpot up at least twice!! the beauty of Festival meetings, you wake up exactly where you need to be, full breakfast followed by stroll for racing post and a few pints before starting all over again..
Report dambuster July 16, 2018 5:05 PM BST
