Onlooker,

Check out a horse called Kirkum - ran in two handicap hurdles in March 2011 when officially rated 30. He was 46lbs out of the handicap in the first one at Huntingdon and actually completed in a 3m 1f hurdle. He also had a rating of 10 on the flat.

Don't think he needs to "RE-read your post". I'm sure he understand this quite basic topic.

Spanish Optimist currently has the lowest hurdle rating in the country and, jointly with Sussex Road, the lowest over fences too (also 44).

The only other two horses with a rating less then 50 over Jumps are Flichity (c49) and Lady Jameson (c48).

This may help you, onlooker https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/official-ratings/ratings-database/

For heroic levels of hopelessness under both codes, check out a 6-y-old called Kirkum.

He's rated 10 on the flat and 30 over hurdles.

Which makes him the worst dual purpose horse in training.

Is "in training" strictly true?

That trainer Peter Purdy some years ago had some elderly jumpers rated very low as I recall.

Surely some of the Wilson horses which were 1000/1 every time they ran, must be rated lowly ?

Also what was that maiden chaser who had a cult following, who was always tailed off but had a fan club and ran over 100 times ?

Cedar Falls might deserve the prize. Rated 28. Son of Giant's Causeway and half-brother to a Group 1 winning filly in the US. Started life with Aidan O'Brien, though never made the track with him. Managed to go off just 16/1 in his first run in a handicap over hurdles, despite being 34 lbs oh, but UR'd at the first.

Crookofdevon ran in a claiming hurdle at Perth last year with, according to the RP, a rating of 40. He had never run in a handicap, so presumably had been entered in one. It's hard to see how he deserved his 40, as he only has one completion over hurdles (his previous hurdles efforts had all been PUs), as his one completion resulted in him being beaten 97 lengths by a 120-rated winner whilst in receipt of 7 lbs. His RPR rating for the race was 8, which appears to have assumed that the 113-rated 2nd horse ran to his mark, and the 97 lengths could be taken on merit - so perhaps 40 is the new BHA floor?
Report domino14 July 6, 2018 6:07 PM BST
Nope Ged, no minimum rating, but they tend to have to give a horse a mark it can actually get in a race off.

I've seen horses on the flat rated 10 or so ! In fact I think I even rode a couple once !
