Went to back Vibrant in the photo, was sure he won. Should always go with your 1st judgemnt, market closed, thought that was lucky, as Gerald said, would have been a pleasent surprise. However, it was not going to be that big a bet. Some people will not be happy if they are not paid on the new winner.

BHA gives judges a helping hand after embarrassing photo-finish reversal
By Peter Scargill UPDATED 4:46PM, JUL 5 2018
Judges have been handed a safety net by the BHA following the embarrassing reversal of the placings in a photo-finish at Kempton in March.
The BHA was forced to amend the result of a 1m4f handicap after a re-examination of the photo-finish showed hot favourite Oregon Gift had actually claimed victory over Bird For Life by a nose instead of the other way around.
However, punters who had backed Oregon Gift were left out of pocket with the incorrect result made official by the weighed-in signal being given, while Mark Usher, trainer of Bird For Life, expressed his disappointment with how the incident had been handled.
Since the start of this week the finishing order of races have been verified by the stipendiary steward on duty before the weighed-in announcement is made and the result is official.
While the judge retains final responsibility for results, distances and times, the new process allows a query to be sent by the stipendiary steward to revisit the result.
The two parties can then come to an agreement and any amendments to the provisional result can be made before it becomes official.
Brant Dunshea, the BHA’s chief regulatory officer, said: "Although the initial situation which caused us to look into results verification was disappointing, the outcome – whereby all those affected by the result of a race can have increased confidence in its accuracy – is a positive one.
"I’d like to thank all those who have been involved in the process, both within the BHA and externally, for their assistance in completing this project, which is now in place for all races run in Britain."

It is not the first time Wheeler has been at the centre of a photo-finish farce, with a race at Kempton in March subject to a reversal after he had called the photo incorrectly.
It is an embarrassing episode for the BHA, as less than 24 hours earlier British racing's governing body had announced a safety net procedure with the finishing order of races needing to be verified by the stipendiary steward on duty before the weighed-in announcement is made and the result is official.
Gotta go not up to job clearly.

Amazing after so many mistakes in the past still only one person adjudicating instead of at two (at least) - the banks do that with hole-in-the-wall deposits so why not horse racing.
Let's hope the official concerned was not under the influence of anything illegal. Maybe a trip to 'specsavers' would be adequate.

This is his second mistake in 5 months. Smith was sacked for one mistake. ------------
Fairly sure that - it will be a 1.01 - that if the present 'double-check' system had been in place ....
Then we would have found that Smudger Smith made MORE the just ONE mistake.
In fact - make that - 'No Offers' - instead of 1.01.

Nobody knows - Because he called them so quick - just how many that there may have been -
- But, boy, Were the plenty of potential qualifiers -
- and mistakes such as Wheeler's two latest ones were NOT REVISITED by the BHA, or anybody, in those days.... so they went 'Under the Radar'.

The result WAS changed before the weigh in but damage was still done. Some bookies are under pressure to pay before the weigh in and not everybody hears the amendment. Also, the damage to the reputation and integrity to the sport is immense.

Judge called a photo and then announced Rio as the winner, I went and collected.
It was only just before the start of the second race that a mate of mine who backed Vibrant Chord received a text from a mate saying the result had been reversed.
At no point was their a PA announcement at the track that the result had changed.

lovegod that is almost unbelievable...if that really is the case there must be plenty of people out of pocket.Racecourse need to issue a Statement to justify their keeping quiet.

According to Nick Luck on RUK there was an announcement a few minutes after the race on the tannoy in front of the stand but nothing around the back. Not sure about inside. Extraordinary situation.
As for anyone claiming Dave Smith only made one mistake, everyone knew he was an accident waiting to happen before the incident for which he was sacked. However, I also remember being at Fakenham one day where he was judge and totally messed up by getting down from the judges box before the only horse which had gone the right way around a dolled off hurdle had finished and consequently it couldn't be named the winner and the race was voided. It was very controversial because it was also the last leg of a massive jackpot carry over as it was the Friday after the Cheltenham Festival (3 days back then). His attitude towards it was shocking too as he claimed it wasn't his fault and refused to take any sort of responsibility even though the racecourse commentator (Thommo of all people) had alerted the public to the situation during the race. Would have been late 90's I think and Smith was an absolute disgrace both in his incompetence and his attitude. Should have been sacked after that imo.

There were four of us out the front of the stand and didn't hear an announcement and only knew about it when my mate got a text.
Also Sandown used to have a camera right on the line of the sprint course but this has changed to about half a furlong out.
I wasn't sure I had won as Rio had his head in the air and the other one had his down. Cameraman after the finish was focussing on Rio so thought I had a good chance of getting it and was happy at the announcement that he had 'won'.
