Rooney bought a couple off no.3 didn't he? But then his brain cogs started slowly whirring and he sussed out that he hadn't made the greatest investment of all time.

Owen introduced Rooney and a number of other England players to Steve Smith at the start of the season after becoming tired of running the team gambling school.

Until then Owen handled the bets, but the sums of money involved became too large and he instead recruited Smith to take care of matters.

Smith set up a private bookmakers called Goldchip Ltd, but it was only last Thursday that he obtained a gambling licence.

Before that, he is said to have been acting as a betting agent on behalf of Rooney, Owen and a number of other players — believed to include John Terry, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand.

Fortunately the current young breed are more into world of warcraft or whatever the latest game is than proper gambling, thus promoting a greater sense of harmony within the squad which can carry our boys all the way to world cup glory

One with a fearsome gambling reputation was "The Goalie" Andy Goram. He used to hire a plane to go to meetings to back his fancies.
He lost £25K one month when he was playing for Coventry in 2001. Both of his wives and many a girl friend kicked him out for his drinking and gambling. His second wife got a court order to prevent him getting his hands on the house sales proceeds fearing he would blow the lot.

Ah! Rix Woodcock! Time to re-post this one again:

goggles15 04 Oct 11 09:01 Joined: 26 Sep 10 | Topic/replies: 770 | Blogger: goggles15's blog
rix woodcock named after the 2 players was a cracker only in what happenend in a mecca betting shop in east finchley in the 80s.

there was a young kid i know who was managing this pokey little shop in the days of boardmen.

anyway he was sitting in the back room when he heard the young cashier screaming so he runs out into the shop the boardman is standing on the built up platform and he  has got his c0ck out and having a five knuckle shuffle over some old dear who is oblivious to him as she is writing out her bets.
there are 2 postman in the shop and one of the horses mentioned on the old extel commentry is rix woodcock and there shouting out give it some woodcock.
he then blew his beans over the old dear.

this story is 100% truthful because i know the manager and he then tells me the boardman got nicked 6 weeks later whilst working in a petrol station and some bird has pulled up and he has run out of the kiosk stark b0ll0ck naked with a stiffy on and shouting let me fill you up

Frank Worthington is one of the greatest omissions EVER!

He never knowingly missed a race meeting at any club he played for.

Dean Saunders loves the horses and the dogs. He sure did when he was at Brighton.

And don't forget Stan Bowles partner in betting crime at QPR, the very talented Don Shanks who when he was broke had a spell as Darryll Holland's driver****-bagman and a very decent fella he is, too.

Dean McKeown rode Kevin and Mrs Keegan's first winner. Was homebred and trained by Franny Lee.
