Every sentence over the tannoy and all over every big screen tonight was about the newly renamed Chesterbet Bookmakers.  Genuine looking bookmakers joints, even different boards to give the impression of different bookmakers and competition.  Joints manned by what look like street urchins from Oliver Twist wearing waistcoats and flat caps Laugh

I suppose when you offer terrible value, wont let punters take a price and try to block any competition that does in fact sound like most people's idea of a "bookmaker"!

Is this for real?, what odds do they show on the boards?
Report wasnot June 30, 2018 12:25 AM BST
They display the current show, less their skim of 10%, on the boards in decimal including stake.  So for example if the show from tatts is 4/1 they show 3.6/1 but as 4.6 so to the unwary they look bigger than the current show.  However, you can't take a price.  You get the SP after the race, less their 10% skim.

Could lead to fisticuffs if someone bets with them under the impression that they're taking a price a point over the show.

I object to 2 things about them.  One is that they are calling themselves "Bookmakers" even though you can't take a price with them and secondly they wont allow any competition.  They have positioned themselves in the very best positions on the racecourse, made themselves look like ring bookmakers, then deliberately starved tatts of punters and wont allow any real bookmakers into those areas to compete with them.  I wonder what the Competition and Markets Authority would make of that?
Report mouse muldoon June 30, 2018 12:39 AM BST
Surely they have to have a disclaimer on their pitches re not being able to take a price? Would be mayhem otherwise.

And a rather large disclaimer at that to facilitate my spotting it after a few ales.

Worst thing I’ve read all week.

Absolutely RANCID

It's time the oncourse bookmakers joined the 21st century and display decimal odds, much more customer friendly and much more open and honest. The new breed of punters just dont ever use fractions and dont understand them especially all the rubbish you see on boards like 12/5 13/5 etc.
Report IanP June 30, 2018 8:56 AM BST
The new breed of punters don't go racing. I would say the vast majority of current racegoers prefer fractions.
Report mmmalushka June 30, 2018 9:12 AM BST
Have you ever asked them?
