About 30 years ago, when BBC used to show the Masters live on Sunday night. Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie were in a play off with some other guy. I was watching on BBC2 and in those days had a telephone account will Billies. I knew Montgomerie would blow it and phoned Billies and asked for £500 on Els. The operative laughed and said "we all want £500 on Els" and proceeded to tell me Montgomerie had been knocked out at the first hole and Els was about to win the playoff. It turned out the "live" transmission was time delayed by the BBC by nearly 60mins; a little white lie they used to get away with back in the day...

Just 1 hour delayed 'live'?! at least now on Sky it's only about 20 seconds!

When Monty played in a Scottish Open, or was about to, his divorce had just become public knowledge, very public knowledge and he was in a sorry mess.
I thought to myself if he is ever to miss a cut this is the time. Not only did I bet him to miss it I inflated shop odds and laid him with all my golf outing mates to massive jeering and derision. He fluffed the first day - brilliant. Different Monty second day but on the 35th he put his ball knee high and, to my gut-wrenching dismay, got it out and two feet from the pin to birdie. The big galoot parred the last, cost me a fortune and rubbed it in by hacking around on the final two days. ![]() |

Think you might mean the US Open regards Ernie and Monty ,Els never won a Masters.
Too many ricks to mention but backing Dennis Smith from all rates from 25 down to 1.05 to beat the Phil Taylor was up there as a sleep loser. |
