Life's too comfortable at Daddy's. No get up and go, had a stint at Hannon's turned down loads of rides cause she wouldn't travel. Doesn't matter how talented you are, if you haven't got the hunger you'll never make it in this game. Was stupid her old man giving her a job this year, should have sent her up north and taught her to graft, he can't farm out the chances like O'Brien can for his kids !
My friends have 8 with O'Meara and one with Griffiths. She was offer to ride one in an apprentice race for O'Meara up at Beverley last year, and then another for David in the seller. The one in the seller had no chance but we expected the one in the apprentice to win. Her agent booked her and rung David at 11.30am saying she didn't want to travel to Beverley for one ride with a chance, as Richard takes half her fee and she would get like £50 after deductions and that wouldn't cover her petrol. We ended up getting a replacement rider and the horse in the seller ran well and the horse in the last won.

Fair enough if it's just a hobby for her, I doubt she'll be going hungry.
Hannon's probably wasn't the best yard to go to if wanting to get rides, considering others have left there due to the competition for rides.
I suppose you can half understand not wanting to travel for maybe just the one ride too on a horses the rest of the jockeys in the yard have overlooked, which will probably sum up its chances too.

She would learn plenty of bad habits in the north. That much is guaranteed.

When you're an apprentice you take whatever rides you can get. In the early 90s when I started riding, I would have driven to Ayr to ride a 100/1 shot in a maiden . You can't turn down rides, you have to make contacts and build up relations to get rides.

Never been based up north but Ben Haslam used her a lot in her first season and so did Alan Swinbank. Sadly when she moved to Hannon she expected the world to be given to her and it wasn't so went running back to daddy. She was offered a job with Brian Ellison but turned it down.
Delta for your info Clive Cox trains in Lambourn, Ron Hodges in Somerset and Tony Carroll is Evesham way, none of those three are up north, unless you live in Watford lol.

I understand that domino14 but prize money hasn't really kept up with expenses these days and a lot of youngsters fall by the wayside especially after losing their claim and not getting the chances, when having to ride off levels against more experienced jockeys or they can no longer offer weight off the horse's back like the next batch of apprentices.
It then isn't really financially viable for them to go to Scotland or the northern courses for maybe one ride when going up from Lambourn or Newmarket, especially when you work out what the hourly rate would be from leaving home to getting back home with all of the travelling involved, including you would imagine often having to do the driving themselves and what it takes out of you.
Plus her Dad can still offer her rides and maybe she travels to the courses with him or the stable representative at no financial cost to her.

The fact is when a trainer is told an apprentice doesn't want to travel to ride horses for you, it will put you off using them, when you're an apprentice building contacts is the only way to lose your claim.
Megan will never lose her claim just riding for her Dad, he simply doesn't have the number of flat horses that will provide her winners and so on.
The fact is she doesn't get many rides as she isn't hungry enough, when you're an apprentice it's not about making money, it's about riding winners and getting contacts to help you. When you ride for a yard as an apprentice your trainer takes half your riding fee, but they have to pay for half your tack, and also half your traveling expenses as well. However most trainers are quick to have their 50% and would rarely give you a penny towards your tack and transport despite their agreement to do so. I can't remember ever being given petrol money or tack off Barry for the whole time I was his apprentice, but I often shared rides to the track, or if I knew I was riding up north I would travel up the day before (if I wasn't riding) and ride out for a nrothern yard to build new contacts before going racing. Early in my career it was still 24 hour decs, so you have less planning time than riders now, but you always sort of had an idea where you were going to be riding.
It's a shame Megan doesn't appear to be really hungry to build links in the industry as she's actually a very decent rider and excellent value for her claim.

No grounding is better than away from her dad's establishment to build up her determination, resolution and constitution; best way to develop and progress away from home, as my dad always reminded us of when little.

Yes I totally understood the question domino14 but presumably if she went a long distance for a single ride every day of the week, the "why doesn't she get more rides" question would still be just as valid, wouldn't it?

The fact is, if you aren't willing to take the rides unless they suit you, then you're never going to get more rides.
No one is going to ring her agent and say I have 2 at Carlisle can Megan rides them, agent says, no sorry mate too far for her to go, but I see you have 4 in at Bath, she'll go to ride them if you want !
The apprentices that make it, make a name for themselves, work hard, drive long hours, do 2 meetings a day even if it's riding useless yaks, as you never know when that break is coming.
Megan simply isn't hungry and likes the idea of being a jockey rather than wanting to be one. After a while trainers give up ringing up for rides as they know she wont go there.
Josie Gordan went 3-4 years of getting 1 ride now and then and going nowhere, but she had a breakthrough year in 2015 as she started riding out for 3-4 yards and would go anywhere for one ride, and started getting her name into a number of trainers thoughts, and rides produced winners and then in 2016 she was Champion Apprentice.
There's only one way to make it in this game and that's hard work, you simply put it all in, or you don't expect a career. Too many apprentices come into the game nowadays expecting it on a plate. In the early 90s when I was an apprentice you had like 2/3 apprentices in one yard, you literally fought for any spare ride going !
So finances don't come into it if you want to make it, you don't become Frankie or Ryan Moore overnight. I understand journeymen jockeys or pro's not going to meets for one ride for cost reasons, but there is simply no excuse for an apprentice looking to get on in the game, you'll never make it if you do.
If you rode one horse a day, that's circa 320 rides a year, plus from that ride a day you'll get winners and new contacts and that will get you 2/3 rides on busy days with big fields, especially if you do low weights. Siting at home getting 0 rides, because you don't want to travel, will not get you any rides.
I'm sure that with Megan it is more about the fact she doesn't need to and one day will take over the reigns of her Dad at the yard but the reason she doesn't get more rides, is nothing to do with her riding ability, it comes down to attitude.
