If you are going for PRE- Classic winners running in a Handicap - then ...

The number one has to be SCEPTRE - who, as a 3-yr-old was beaten a head in the Lincoln Handicap- or Lincolnshire Handicap, as it was known in those days - before winning 4 of the following classics.

Carried just 6st 7lb in the Lincoln.

Mrs McCardy also won the Free Handicap.

Triple Classic winner Sceptre ran twice in the Lincoln finishing 5th as a 4-y-o in 1903

onlooker - I looked to check to see if Sceptre ran in the Lincoln the following season and she did finishing fifth.  Apart from her more famous owners she was owned in later life by the Tattersalls (yes them!) Sir John Musker (who owned Shadwell before Sheikh Hamdan) and Lord Glanely (who owned all five english classic winners).   owgamtpphche

If we are going to list Classic winners who ran in Handicaps prior to their Classic success, we will be here forever. One that immediately springs to mind is Peleid, who won the Magnet Cup and finished 4th in the Ebor before winning the Leger.

Only one I can come up with is Jacqueline Quest which won 1000 Guineas and got disqualified placed 2nd and got beat in a class 3 conditions stakes at Leicester priced @ 1/4.

Aurelius went hurdling after being a failure at stud. Was quite classy over hurdles but would have run in a handicap in the 60s I would think.
