Raul Da Silva has been banned for 21 days for violent conduct for hitting fellow rider Jim Crowley in the face in the Goodwood weighing room.

Crowley suffered a cut and swollen lip which needed stitches after the incident following the first race of Sunday’s meeting.

The pair both rode in the 7f handicap, in which Crowley’s mount, the Patrick Channings-trained Charles Molson, and Medieval, trained by Paul Cole and ridden by Da Silva, were both unplaced.

Crowley, the 2016 champion jockey, declined to comment after the incident and was able to ride in the last two races.

Fellow jockeys Martin Dwyer, John Egan, Jack Mitchell, Richard Kingscote, two valets, the clerk of the scales, the changing room doorman and the racecourse medical officer were interviewed as part of the inquiry, which did not conclude until after racing.

Crowley, 39, has one of the most prestigious jobs there is, as retained rider to Hamdan Al Maktoum, a position he has held since the autumn of 2016, when he was champion jockey.

He has partnered 31 winners from 183 rides this year in Britain, his latest big-race victory coming in the Listed Achilles Stakes on Muthmir at Haydock on Saturday. Among the rides he has to look forward to at Royal Ascot is King’s Stand favourite Battaash.

Da Silva, 31, has five winners from 62 mounts in Britain this year, and he rides mainly for Paul Cole and Jose Santos.

On Monday Crowley is in action at Brighton in the afternoon, while Da Silva is riding at Windsor in the evening.

I've had a look back at the race and there's no incident that obviously might have lead to an altercation. RDS did cut across from his wide draw after the start and perhaps Crowley was a bit short of room momentarily but nothing out of the ordinary that you wouldn't just put down to everyday race riding.

Da Silva offered a different interpretation of events, and claimed: "Jim came up to me and was aggressive, telling me I was a danger out on the track, and I told him to leave me alone.

"It carried on and two or three jockeys held me back when I was trying to defend myself."

John Gorton, Scobie Breasley and Ron Hutchinson were my favourite jockeys from abroad. The best was arguably Lester Reiff or Danny Maher.
Report sparrow June 11, 2018 6:27 AM BST
I would certainly agree that Breasley and Hutchinson were great jockeys who I did see on many occasions and from what I have read Danny Maher was possibly the best of them all. I don't agree that Roberts was not a good jockey either.

A clear case of da Silva getting to where Jim wanted to be , going to the first bend.

Jim is not having a great time, and in a bad mood at having to ride on a Sunday. Has a go at da Silva (who is at least 6" shorter) and unexpectedly gets a belt for his trouble. You can be sure that if Franny Norton had executed the same manoeuvre Jim would not have breathed a word to him.

Never really got the media love in , about what a great fella he is, that  went on when Jim won the title (though he was absolutely deadly on the track that  year) .

Those that know Jim won't be surprised at yesterday's course of events.
Report acey deucy June 11, 2018 2:32 PM BST
On the back of Raul da Silva receiving a 21-day ban for striking Jim Crowley at Goodwood on Sunday, we look back at previous incidents involving warring jockeys . . .
Calvin Borel and Javier Castellano
Borel and Castellano came to blows after the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs in 2010. Castellano's riding upset Borel during the race and after weighing in he confronted his rival in the winner's circle, shouting: "I'm going to kill you" before being restrained. Castellano then threw a punch at Borel, who was restrained. Borel then broke free and threw several punches at Castellano. Stewards fined both jockeys and gave Castellano a six-day ban for rough riding.

Kieren Fallon and Stuart Webster
Fallon and Webster famously clashed at Beverley in 1994 in an incident which resulted in Fallon pulling Webster off his horse after they had passed the winning line. Fallon, who was incensed after the pair clashed mid-race, received a six-month ban for violent and improper conduct.
The Beverley clash was the first in what would become a controversial career for six-time champion jockey Fallon, who was cleared of race-fixing after standing trial at the Old Bailey, as well as receiving two bans for failing drug tests.
Dominic Elsworth and Timmy Murphy
Murphy was banned for nine days after a dust-up with fellow rider Dominic Elsworth at Newbury in 2013. Stewards banned Murphy, who dislocated his shoulder in the incident, after finding he was "the main instigator and the main protagonist in the altercation".

Several previous incidents of jockeys having a scrap after a race, Geoff Baxter was a hard man, once, after an incident with Lester Piggott, he belted Piggott with a right hook. I think Piggott backed off because he knew he would have come off worse with Baxter.

carrot, it's possible it's something to do with the start where RDS cuts across from his wide draw, as a few of them did seem to get tightened up to his inner momentarily. Perhaps it's been a build up of little things that came to a head?
Report GEORGE.B June 12, 2018 11:41 AM BST
Just seen this quote from RDS, after he'd claimed to the RP that the jocks in the weighing room were siding with Crowley

"Because they're all his friends and he's the star - the champion jockey, and me - I'm no-one, which is why no-one's going to believe me, because I'm no-one."

He insisted: "I didn't have anything in my hand when I hit him."

....Something, though, caused tempers to flare, but unless Da Silva decides to appeal against the decision – and there is no sign of that at present – all concerned may be more inclined to draw a line under it and move on.
