By Mark Storey UPDATED 6:21PM, JUN 10 2018 Raul Da Silva has been banned for 21 days for violent conduct for hitting fellow rider Jim Crowley in the face in the Goodwood weighing room. Crowley suffered a cut and swollen lip which needed stitches after the incident following the first race of Sunday’s meeting. The pair both rode in the 7f handicap, in which Crowley’s mount, the Patrick Channings-trained Charles Molson, and Medieval, trained by Paul Cole and ridden by Da Silva, were both unplaced. Crowley, the 2016 champion jockey, declined to comment after the incident and was able to ride in the last two races. Fellow jockeys Martin Dwyer, John Egan, Jack Mitchell, Richard Kingscote, two valets, the clerk of the scales, the changing room doorman and the racecourse medical officer were interviewed as part of the inquiry, which did not conclude until after racing. Crowley, 39, has one of the most prestigious jobs there is, as retained rider to Hamdan Al Maktoum, a position he has held since the autumn of 2016, when he was champion jockey. He has partnered 31 winners from 183 rides this year in Britain, his latest big-race victory coming in the Listed Achilles Stakes on Muthmir at Haydock on Saturday. Among the rides he has to look forward to at Royal Ascot is King’s Stand favourite Battaash. Da Silva, 31, has five winners from 62 mounts in Britain this year, and he rides mainly for Paul Cole and Jose Santos. On Monday Crowley is in action at Brighton in the afternoon, while Da Silva is riding at Windsor in the evening. This story is being updated and more news will follow shortly. I've had a look back at the race and there's no incident that obviously might have lead to an altercation. RDS did cut across from his wide draw after the start and perhaps Crowley was a bit short of room momentarily but nothing out of the ordinary that you wouldn't just put down to everyday race riding.

do you remember when Fallon pulled Stuart Webster off his horse from behind
![]() |
By:
Well done Raul wouldn’t have minded having a go myself

By:
he was only ever a kempton specialist, went for it one season and got champion jockey, subsequently got the hamdan job on the strength of one season.
wouldnt be any great shakes in my eyes. |

I seem to recall Richard Hills using his whip on another jockey at the start...can't remember who it was.
By:
Agreed chav. The only thing he has going for him is he’s probably slightly better than Hanagan who was before him. The pair of them useless though.

By:
the benchmark was R Hills there ... nuff sayed ..
By:
a certain m hills seemed to back up the pedigree

By:
the crowley appointment much similar to the roberts debacle for sheikh mo...one good season

Mouse Roberts was different class to any of these mentioned above....excellent jockey.
By:
Mouse and George Moore (remember him ?) were two great 'foreign' jockeys who left this country far too early.
By:
cauthen and asmusson probably the 2 best overseas jockeys to ride here
By:
Well said posy, mouse very reliable, right place right time.
By:
George Moore was an excellent jockey.
By:
George Moore chose to leave after he and his family were threatened by one of the doping gangs. I rated him as second best jockey riding at the time.
By:
Different era and most will probably not of seen him ride but when it comes to best overseas jockey Scobie Breasley was one of the best, the Kid would be the only "foreigner" that I would personally put in front of him

Mouse Roberts a Great Jockey?????.....

Big John got rid of him like a shot.

Da Silva offered a different interpretation of events, and claimed: "Jim came up to me and was aggressive, telling me I was a danger out on the track, and I told him to leave me alone.
"It carried on and two or three jockeys held me back when I was trying to defend myself." https://www.racingpost.com/news/latest/da-silva-banned-for-violent- conduct-after-punching-jim-crowley-in-the-face/334846 |

John Gorton, Scobie Breasley and Ron Hutchinson were my favourite jockeys from abroad. The best was arguably Lester Reiff or Danny Maher.
By:
I would certainly agree that Breasley and Hutchinson were great jockeys who I did see on many occasions and from what I have read Danny Maher was possibly the best of them all. I don't agree that Roberts was not a good jockey either.

Gary Stevens showed our jocks the gulf in class when he was briefly here
By:
I was working in a betting shop when George Moore was riding and the only time we had to check and report bets (other than large £ ones) were those involving George Moore mounts. I thought it was crazy but bookies did seem wary of his expertise.

A clear case of da Silva getting to where Jim wanted to be , going to the first bend.
Jim is not having a great time, and in a bad mood at having to ride on a Sunday. Has a go at da Silva (who is at least 6" shorter) and unexpectedly gets a belt for his trouble. You can be sure that if Franny Norton had executed the same manoeuvre Jim would not have breathed a word to him. Never really got the media love in , about what a great fella he is, that went on when Jim won the title (though he was absolutely deadly on the track that year) . Those that know Jim won't be surprised at yesterday's course of events. |

On the back of Raul da Silva receiving a 21-day ban for striking Jim Crowley at Goodwood on Sunday, we look back at previous incidents involving warring jockeys . . .
Calvin Borel and Javier Castellano Borel and Castellano came to blows after the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs in 2010. Castellano's riding upset Borel during the race and after weighing in he confronted his rival in the winner's circle, shouting: "I'm going to kill you" before being restrained. Castellano then threw a punch at Borel, who was restrained. Borel then broke free and threw several punches at Castellano. Stewards fined both jockeys and gave Castellano a six-day ban for rough riding. Kieren Fallon and Stuart Webster Fallon and Webster famously clashed at Beverley in 1994 in an incident which resulted in Fallon pulling Webster off his horse after they had passed the winning line. Fallon, who was incensed after the pair clashed mid-race, received a six-month ban for violent and improper conduct. The Beverley clash was the first in what would become a controversial career for six-time champion jockey Fallon, who was cleared of race-fixing after standing trial at the Old Bailey, as well as receiving two bans for failing drug tests. Dominic Elsworth and Timmy Murphy Murphy was banned for nine days after a dust-up with fellow rider Dominic Elsworth at Newbury in 2013. Stewards banned Murphy, who dislocated his shoulder in the incident, after finding he was "the main instigator and the main protagonist in the altercation". |

Several previous incidents of jockeys having a scrap after a race, Geoff Baxter was a hard man, once, after an incident with Lester Piggott, he belted Piggott with a right hook. I think Piggott backed off because he knew he would have come off worse with Baxter.

By:
You would like to think in this day and age someone recorded the fight on their phone.
By:
have watched the race a few times now and still cannot see what de silva has done wrong in this race?
By:
Jesus just seen a pic.....Looks a Nasty one.
![]() |
By:
that pic shows it quite clearly,, that nose looks broken, are those stitches in his eye, looks like hes been in an ufc fight ffs.
By:
Shocking Stuff !!!
By:
what has he hit him with, it would take more than 1 punch to do that damage,
![]() |
By:
in a statement, Crowley said: "There was a minor disagreement over a race-riding incident with a number of jockeys not happy with Raul’s riding.
a number of jockeys not happy with raul's riding... sounds like a witch hunt against the rider, no wonder the rider was upset he hasn't done anything wrong |
By:
21 Days???....I would have given the **** 6 Months.
