Why is entry to the races far more expensive in British racing compared to Irish racing? An example tomorrow at Kilbeggan is 15 Euros, while Perth are charging £25. Both have similar standard of racing going on. Both would be classed as your lower end of NH racing. What's your thoughts on this?
you can buy advance online for a discount and Perth, £61+ k to winners including a £25k race, Kilbeggan 48k Euro with a 12k Euro feature....regardless I fully expect there to be a much larger crowd at Perth than Kilbeggan...
Musselburgh yesterday 10,000 sell out for £50 Ladies Day, Kelso last Sunday 5,000 at more than £25 for Ladies Day so some people are prepared to pay....
however this is the thin end of the wedge in the longer term, the new 'weekend' crowd so sought after by the racecourses have in past three weeks shown themselves up at Ascot/Goodwood/Hexham...putting the best races on Saturdays in front of a largely pissed up crowd who couldn't care less if it was a seller or a G1 is just pure nonsense and will in longer term drive the real racing enthusiasts back to the living room with exchanges/online firms/RUK - racecourses really need to take a hard look at their future prospects and not the short term because all around them the signs are loud and clear...

France 4 euros normally up to 8 maybe at the weekend. Beautiful courses (although food outside main restaurant is low grade) and good racing for about £3 but no-one turns up.

were you there foxy? was surprised to see so many coaches in the car park on telly but on a no-football summer saturday I guess a day out in the sun, getting hammered, being loud and lairy, with possibility to win a few quid for the coke and ale went down a treat...

OK, good to hear of good crowd behaviour, for one of the gaffe tracks I quite like Worcester, something about having a racecourse right in the centre of town and decent trainers such as nicholls/fry/skelton and Jonjo (although his record over past 2-3 years suggests he's no longer decent!) often send good horses. There's aSlug and Lettuce just up the hill behind The Hive, with a couple of great looking barmaids - always look forward to newcastle brown in their company!!

Gordon....the real racing enthusiasts are already in the living room imo I have been lucky to have relatives who owned horses for the last 25 years. I have been up and down the country to many racecourses with the benefit of owners/trainers facilities. On my soujourns into the plebeien facilities i have gradually seen the football crowd types take over and while never actually witnessing first hand any dust ups the atmosphere is threatening and unpleasant.it has obviously gone far worse now and i would think twice before attending a race meeting now especially on a saturday, the expense is also a consideration.

ribotman, there's a small dwindling band of middle aged fogeys who I regularly see at the Scottish tracks so it's not died off yet but probably will over next 20 years or so..i've recently invested in 2 x 5% shares which entitles me (once I've completed the paperwork) to free admission to all the Scottish meetings (bar one or two ladies days!) so may probably go even more often, although I too shy off from the saturday/sunday meetings as a rule unless in members or hospitality areas. the group i travel with went to the saturday of dublin racing festival and are heading to laytown/kilbeggan/navan in september, atmosphere seems different over there..

did you read about the drug arrests at kelso ladies day gordon63, quite a large amount when you consider the event... it seems the " ladies room " was not just for the powdering of noses, i think i read 38 people stopped and searched amounting in 1
yes, not much really when 5000 there but a worrying trend - apparently the biggest find was in a bin in the car park, someone obviously saw the dogs coming and got rid quick!
