People sell gold coins at auctions why do they do that ?

They have to pay the auction house around 20% the people who buy the coins will only pay the value of the gold ( I am not talking about rare coins just the ones where the value is just in the gold

So my question is why do people sell gold coins at auction when the would get more from a dealer.

I can not work it out am I missing something ?

Report mouse muldoon May 16, 2018 2:59 PM BST
Most people would be sensible enough just to take them into a jeweller's.

I took some in last year and he gave me £215 each, said he was making himself £8 on each.

I tried to sell some of them chocolate ones Laugh
Report mouse muldoon May 16, 2018 3:09 PM BST
There is a cocoa bean shortage, so you might want to hold on to them for now Snipey.

Excited I remember once selling pure muck to girls who were pestering me to sell them a bit of my hashish Laugh obviously I knew they didn't have a clue so I rolled up some muck, put some "impressions" in it, and I told them it was some new stuff that had just come on the market called "golf ball" hash LaughLaughLaugh one of them inspected it for a sec.. before putting it in her pocket and handing me the fiver I was charging Laugh

I suppose same reason why some people buy gold bullion out of vending machines like they would buy crisps,Choco bars, knowing its got a mark up on bullionb you can buy from a bullion trader
Report 1st time poster May 17, 2025 10:10 AM BST
well he,s another ? ,which is even madder, why do people buy sovs for example from jewelers, etc at a massive mark up compared to bullion traders, I suppose at auction you can put a reserve on and hope to get someone at auction/online who wants a sOV of a certain yr
Report 1st time poster May 17, 2025 10:12 AM BST
1966 gold sov for example has a built in premium
Report 1st time poster May 17, 2025 10:16 AM BST
I buy both grandkids a sov every yr and  one when they were born, they,ll do ok with them but now costing me over a grand every Jan, the 1st one about 9 yrs ago was around 180 quid,2nd maybe 200ish ,last Jan's was 517 quid, looks like been higher for me this yr but good for them.keep it going till their 18th or 21st

Same reason people pay twice as much for Nescafe as for Tesco instant coffee or 3 times as much for some branded medicines compared to generic ones. No common sense about money which is why 10 people on the same salary can have such different lifestyles. The most savvy will become a millionaire in 10 years, the least will be visiting a food bank.
Report CagliariG May 17, 2025 11:01 AM BST
Does that apply now sage or 2018 when the thread started?
Report sageform May 17, 2025 11:05 AM BST
Both. Getting harder to get to a £million in 2018 money though.

1,laid city of troy for £155,000
2,selling a winning system for £600,000
3,caught same 2 118kg tuna that someone else caught.

The big Q is, how many of you are backing COT to win the substandard Derby at the most ridiculous odds for a colt who has not grown, looks like a starved hurdler and stuffed because he has not trained on?

In AOB do you trust enough for lightening to strike twice in a sub par GP1 and trust a clothes horse to beat trees?

As far as I am aware I personally own the only method which will produce a long term profit, not a "system" as popularly refered to and devised after 2 decades + of research. My sole motivation for posting on any racing or betting forum is to give the average punter an edge.No more,no less.

My method would be no good to the average or even prudent punter or greedy chancers.I had an offer to purchase it following a trial by 4 individuals on the BF Forum, over a year using it.Bound by copyright etc and proven beyond doubt the worth of it.

The only time I was tempted to sell I had an offer that was £40,000 short of the £600,000 I would accept. All documented and recorded for posterity.I would only sell on condition that the proceeds went to SSAFA,knowing full well that would be the only payoff.

The offer came from a well known tipping operation who continue to rip off punters Nationwide and now coming up to their most lucrative period.

It is still for sale but £600k is the minumum I would consider to part with it on behalf of SSAFA!!
