Nothing special or dangerous about AK. Any starting hand can make you poor. Failure to connect well with the comm cards brings bluffing into play.

As a Professional Poker player, AK is an overrated hand as it's only A high, but it only makes a bad player poor. If you can't get away from AK on a flop, with no A or K on it, then you shouldn't be playing. Also too many people raise too much with AK, and a lot of people call 3 or 4 bets, or even Shoves with AK, and that is another sign of a poor player.

Whilst I wouldn't be as dismissive as that, I did find it a strange statement from a pro player. I agree that the hand is sometimes over played, the state of the table opposition, stack sizes, blind sizes etc mean calling all ins with the hand is definitely a correct call. Towards the end of MTT's the hand goes up in value as shorter stacks are shoving with virtually any Ace.

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em excellent advice You never count your money When you're sittin' at the table very bad advice, ducy? |

You try to ban the AK
I got ten of them stashed With a case of hand grenades Body Count by Body Count on Body Count. I don't think they're talking about a starting hand in poker mind. Off the top of my head I can only think of one other occurrence of band, song, album having the same title and that is: Motörhead by Motörhead on Motörhead. Over to chit chat I think.... |

AK is behind so many hands, the only way you would call an all in with it, is when the aggressor has a short stack.
AK pre has to hit, you're behind any pair, in a flip with most other A, smaller kicker. Very few pro's will put tournament on the line with it. It's one of those hands when shoving with it is far more acceptable than calling with it. Give me 88 - QQ and I'll happily be called by AK all day long. |

Without wishing to be confrontational, you're not "flipping" with another ace smaller kicker, you're a strong fav and while maths will tell you you'll lose a percentage of the time, it's certainly not a 50/50 flip.

No you're not technically flipping agreed, but whilst you are in front, if they hit their second card, you're pretty much screwed.
That Phillips hand is a classic example of poor players; 1 - He limped, never limp with AK - 2 or 3x for pot value, you can always fold the flop. 2 - When the 2nd player raised, he has four options, shove, raise, call or pass. For the size of the raise, you shouldn't pass, but re-raising him is dangerous, either shove to put the player on the spot, or call are the sensible options. 3 - When the guy 4 bets his raise, get out the pot, unless you're willing to go all in, pass. He stupidly calls. 4 - He didn't connect on flop, but even if he did, he should have checked. Betting shows weakness, and the other player picks up on that going all in. 5 - Phillips should have been pot committed and called, he put too much to throw AK away, if he wasn't prepared to call the all in, he should have never led out. |

I always thought that Ace smaller kicker is the hand you're praying that your opponent has.

its 70/30 with AK v Ax
and nearly a coin flip with AK v pp with AK you are only in bad shape against 2 hands pre-flop with say 8s potentially you are in terrible shape against a higher pp but it all depends on stack depths, opposition, position, number of players at table, number of players in the hand, who is the aggressor etc certainly if you are deep stacked and you miss a flop it shouldn't be too hard to lay it down even if you hit top pair you shouldn't go broke with 1 pair deep stacked short stacked = looser play |

No you're not technically flipping agreed, but whilst you are in front, if they hit their second card, you're pretty much screwed. do you mean AK v A9 on A72 flop AK in front and A9 guy sucks out with a 9 on turn or river?? its just bad luck for AK and the AK guy will win more in the long run if the AK guy is a good player he should milk for value and get suspicious if he raised, especially on multiple streets |

He only won $12K for his EPT win so it wasn't such as big a deal as he's trying to make out.
Looking at his record he may have won hundreds of thousands but after entry fees the net figure could well be negative. After travel and hotel expenses it's a big negative. |
