It was banned (in GB) in 2009. It had been under review since 2005 when Kauto Star fell at Exeter, was remounted, nearly won, but was subsequently found to have sustained a fracture.

Horse welfare - and, probably, public perception, too.
Who knows what injury a horse may have sustained when falling - unless/until checked out by a Vet.
Some of the jockeys are more brave than sensible, aswell - same applies as above - but substitute Doctor for Vet ... although, you could claim that the Vet could do BOTH jobs.
Same in other sports, nowadays ...
Any possibility of a head injury in Football - and the game is immediately stopped...
If the team Doctor suspects concussion - player not allowed to carry on, nor play in another game for a period of time.
The days of a quick sniff of smelling salts are long gone.

I think Silk Trader at Doncaster in Dec 2003 was the last one (in GB) to be remounted and win.
Tropenna was entertaining one Saturday afternoon on TV at Newcastle in 1990 in a 5-runner novice chase...
"Left in lead 1st, tried to run out bend after 6th, blundered 8th, headed 10th, left alone 12th, fell 3 out, remounted"

Seem to remember it happening one day @ Fontwell, where a short price favourite fell, remounted, but couldn't quite get back up on the run in - I think.

It sticks in my mind ronnie, as my brother backed the winner, which i think was a reasonable price and he ended up sweating a bit as it turned into an exciting finish - lol. Loved Fontwell back in the 80's & 90's, going with my Dad who loved it even more. He was always on the ear 'ole for information from people, directly or indirectly like Peter Hedger, Charlie Moore, Josh Gifford. The ring used to be buzzing, full of characters. Those were the days, National Hunt racing at it's best - in my time anyway.

Bob Champion fell on a horse when in a clear lead at a Stratford evening meeting in 1979. He remounted and went on to win. When falling he got a kick in the unmentionables. He went to see his doctor who noticed something else and the rest is history.

Wasn't there a two horse race where they both fell at the same fence and there was a race to remount? I think it involved Mark Dywer & Micky Hammond, possibly at Newcastle though wouldn't be sure of that. I think it was Question Of Sport what happened next?

McCoy - yes, it was at Sedgefield. They both fell 4 out when disputing. 24/11/1989.
2 months earlier at the same track, in a 4-runner race, there were 3 finishers, all remounted, 2 tried to refuse at the last, unseated their riders and remounted; the 3rd horse refused twice at the last having been tailed off. The remaining runner broke its leg approaching the last when just about in front, and was probably the main cause of it all. Andy Orkney rode the 'winner', Grange of Glory - 5/9/1989.

Perhaps something that's been forgotten about Family Business is that McCoy remounted him in his race before his Southwell race as well, to finish 2nd of 4 at Taunton (as the 1/3 fav), though there was no in-running on place markets then.

Scudamore at Chepstow, Jan 1993, 3M nov chase, Capability Brown (8/15) fell 3 out, remounted and still won by 30L. Remarkably, the runner-up was good enough to win by 8L three weeks later at Newton Abbot.

"Led until 4th, prominent when brought down 10th, remounted and left alone 11th, fell next, remounted and continued"
The odds-on fav, Cairncastle, having been left alone at the 10th, refused 3 times at the 11th before giving up.
