...sacked as 1st jockey to Gigginstown House Stud will be riding for the Potts over here except Ireland - Robbie Power will still be on Sizing John. But Ladbrokes are only 2/1 for him to ride Sizing John in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

If so, commiseration to backers of Sizing John,...unfortunately I'm one too.
Report firstimevisor October 10, 2017 6:44 PM BST
Commisereation, why? Robbie Power will have the choice between Our Duke and Sizing John if they both happen to make it to declaration stage. Cooper is top class. Davy Russell was sacked by Gigginstown too remember.
Report doorman99 October 10, 2017 7:23 PM BST
Poor Robbie Power must think what the hell does he have to do! In the semi wilderness for years, gets on some good ones, wins on everything then loses the ride on half of them to an accident prone weakling.  I can't believe there aren't more comments on this, what an utter moron and disloyal cretin Potts of money must be.
Report punchestown October 10, 2017 7:39 PM BST
I would say Power was offered the lot but decided to stay in Ireland and retain his association with Jessie and still ride the Irish trained Potts horses (critically Sizing John).
Report Ibrahima Sonko October 10, 2017 7:45 PM BST
That would makes sense.

Still a shame Robbie wont be on Finians Oscar.
Report doorman99 October 10, 2017 7:53 PM BST
Really punchestown?  Will miss out on an awful lot of winners at Tizzards. Think it is massively disappointing, an absolutely brilliant jockey at getting horses to jump well.
Report punchestown October 10, 2017 8:00 PM BST
Harrington and him get on great and Our Duke among some of her good animals,I suppose you could say he's having his cake and eating it (Particularly as he retains the rides on the Irish trained Potts ones when the horses go abroad).
Report granitjack October 10, 2017 8:14 PM BST
Cooper is shocking. Be interesting to see how long he lasts riding for Potts before patience runs thin....
Report mrcombustible October 10, 2017 8:14 PM BST
Potts regularly sacks his trainers, he will do likewise with his jockeys. A difficult man
Report firstimevisor October 10, 2017 8:46 PM BST
How anybody can say Cooper is shocking is beyond my understanding. He has some CV for a 24 year old. I wouldn't say he's the best around but I havn't seen many better at his age. He's top class
Report carrot1960 October 10, 2017 8:51 PM BST
Shocking way to treat Robbie after his efforts last year. and Tizzard saying the arrangement gives the continuity Alan wants is comical.
Report firstimevisor October 10, 2017 8:56 PM BST
I presume Potts and Power didn't fall out and seeing as Power's main job is with Jessica H, he would be riding in Ireland on Saturdays so I think its understandable enough that the arrangement was never going to work long term.
Report CustomCut October 10, 2017 9:09 PM BST
Power has ridden 12 times for Potts/Tizzard, 8 winners (4 grade 1s) from 2 expected winners going by BSP and yet he loses the rides. Ridiculous. Should have used Cooper midweek and that but let Power ride for him whenever he wants.
Report differentdrum October 10, 2017 9:32 PM BST
I can't believe Power would have turned down the rides. I am not anti-Cooper but it looks a strange decision. Cooper could easily have been second choice both in England and Ireland.
Report doorman99 October 10, 2017 9:49 PM BST
Spot on differentdrum.
Report geordie1956 October 10, 2017 10:03 PM BST
I agree with differentdrum also...the decision seems strange to say the least. The Potts must be hard to please if several Grade 1 successes over a few weeks isn't enough for them
Report firstimevisor October 10, 2017 10:08 PM BST
But how could it work, Power riding the Potts UK horses which would be about 15-20 horses in total?

Cheltenham and Aintree wouldn't be a problem but from now until next March how could it work?

Most of these are Saturday horses. Power is long-term stable jockey to what is becoming a more powerful yard and the horses are flying, and he will be required to ride in Ireland at weekends.

It could have worked reasonably well in the past when all the Potts horses were trained in Ireland but I just can't see how it could possibly work now.
Report punchestown October 10, 2017 10:10 PM BST
One can only assume Power didn't fancy the midweek back and forth?,btw Cooper a terrible pilot with just the 20 odd Grade 1 wins.....ConfusedDevil
Report impossible123 October 10, 2017 10:22 PM BST
As long as Cooper stays away from Sizing John in the Cheltenham Gold Cup even in the absence of Robbie Power I'd be a happy person; Cooper is jinx for me eg Don Cossack and No More Heroes on at least two Cheltenham Festivals.
Report salmon spray October 10, 2017 10:31 PM BST
So is Cooper basing himself over here for 15/20 horses ?
Report workrider October 10, 2017 10:58 PM BST
Cooper is a excellent jockey, of course he makes mistakes, and the occasional ill judged race but what jock doesn't .Potts is a hard man to please, so I'd say Robbie made the right choice.British prize money is a disgrace and its hardly worth any jockey riding for £2,000 and risking life and limb for.
Report differentdrum October 11, 2017 9:19 AM BST
If Power couldn't make the trip (for a good reason) then Cooper could ride them. It is about or should be about giving Power first choice. He deserved that. There is little comparison between the Harrington and Tizzard yards. Other than Our Duke what else would Power be worried about missing? I am sure if he came over here for a couple of decent rides he could easily pick up some spare rides.
Report workrider October 11, 2017 9:26 AM BST
Diff, you seem to be missing my point.Robbie could win a couple of Thurles maidens travel roughly 80 miles and win as much as he would doing 500mls and riding more horses putting himself at more risk, simple really. Prize money over there is worthless to any jockey except the top 4 or 5.
Report isleham October 11, 2017 9:56 AM BST
Robbie getting on a bit so presumably didn't fancy criss crossing the Irish sea all the time so sticking to Jessie though not much happening on Saturday in ireland
Report ph. October 11, 2017 10:11 AM BST
loyalty, comfortable in his own skin, proved last season he is more than a journeyman so obviously doesn't possess the ego that many need massaging. I've no idea who takes over after Jessie but he seems an integral part of the yard ( no doubt there are other stalwarts who have assisted Jessie over the years ) and loyalty seems to be a forgotten quality. Taking on Seamie shows she appreciates proven quality and know how.
Report ph. October 11, 2017 10:17 AM BST
if BC regains his confidence and stays injury free for even a season then once again we can have a real jockey on our hands. His confidence definitely went as races warmed up and jumps had to be asked for. Who can blame him? But its a harsh and fierce arena and he definitely lost races last season Giggs expected him to win. He is very good from the front and the Novice victory yesterday was a front running masterclass imo.
Report firstimevisor October 11, 2017 10:25 AM BST
Differntdrum, you're missing a vital point here. Its about the Harrington yard(100 or so horses including the Potts horses) or just the Potts UK horses. Cue Card will still be ridden by Paddy Brennan, Thistlecrack by Tom Scu etc. Power has been with Harrington for 20 odd years. If he was crazy enough to take on a retainer for Potts alone then Cooper would probably have stepped into the Harrington job, and there are some serious young horses there apart from Our Duke.
Going on previous form there's no knowing who Potts will fall out with next.

Sunday is generally the biggest day in the Irish racing week but Saturday racing is strong as well. If you are stable jockey in a big yard you cannot go missing on Saturdays
Report workrider October 11, 2017 10:46 AM BST
Well said Firstime.
Report differentdrum October 11, 2017 12:51 PM BST
Missing the point or just putting a different point of view? I would plump for the latter. What would be very helpful would be a truthful statement from Power. Fair enough if he turned the job down because he didn't want to travel.

Harrington might have a 100 horses but how many of those are quality jumpers? That is the question to ask. Yes, he might pick up a few moderate maiden hurdles on horses that will never rise above that level. Would you rather do that than win a few quid less on a potential Graded horse? At his age you would think it is about winning the big pots. If he has such close ties with the Harrington yard then they are hardly likely to disown him? Loyalty surely works both ways?
Report salmon spray October 11, 2017 2:04 PM BST
It looks to me as though Potts would prefer Cooper to base himself in GB,as he has apparently offered to pay his removal expenses. Cooper is 25,not sure how old Power is but pushing 40 surely. Not an attractive proposition for him particularly as he has one of the bigger jobs ( Harrington ) in Irish jumps racing.
Report jmdc October 11, 2017 2:20 PM BST
Don't forget that Cooper has bagged the Andrew Brooks rides as well.
Report firstimevisor October 11, 2017 2:38 PM BST
Most definitely missing the point.

The essential point being that Power's first loyalty is to Harrington. The Potts secondary retainer acknowledged this fact, Power would ride for Potts but only when not required by Harrington.

About half of Potts string are in Ireland anyway. Its almost guaranteed that Harrington will have runners every Saturday. So how could the retainer work?

It would work, and has worked, fine for the Spring festivals but cannot possibly work through the Winter.

In a nutshell the secondary retainer with Potts/Power was never going to work and common sense eventually prevailed.
