Most bizarre story - OLeary threw his rattle out of his pram the moment his runners weights were revealed in the Grand National.  Was so upset with Phil Smith that he pulled all his horses out including my fancy Don Poli (who I incidentally think was perfectly suited to the challenge for the GN).

Anyway, Phil Smith obviously felt some remorse and after sleepless nights decided that he would alot a mark to Tombstone which was 1lb higher than his Irish mark.  Considering this gift - connections were originally going to supplement him for the Champion Hurdle, but instead decided that this was too good to turn down and have taken the route for the Coral Cup.

Hence, the price collapse and we now have 4/1 fav in one of the most competitive handicaps in Cheltenham.

Sounds like bonkers - but If Tombstone does win... surely this handshaking would question the integrity of Phil Smith and the bullying nature of O'Leary?

It will certainly be an interesting race tomorrow.

Jezki form should not be taken at face value (nb)

"But if tombstone does win"

Oh so only if he wins, righteo.
Report CheltenhamRoar March 14, 2017 10:50 PM GMT
I don't think it's anything got to do with the jezki form, have a look at the supreme novices form of last season, almost every horse has won since, tombstone is clearly a very good animal in his own right

Why is SuperSundae 5 times the price?
Report CheltenhamRoar March 14, 2017 11:57 PM GMT
Shouldn't be, especially on much better ground, I like hawk high at a price for the ultra shrewd Tim easterby

the rating of Broken Soul on 140 shows what a guesser the UK handicapper responsible is
Report CheltenhamRoar March 15, 2017 12:33 AM GMT
Eh well isn't that exactly what handicapping is? Guessing? It's not an exact science.

what about Mick Jazz who runs in the County? think he might be the reason why Tombstone is going for the Coral Cup instead as Mick Jazz cant go further than this

got caught late by none other than Labaik at Navan with Royal Bond 3rd La Martaline a couple of lengths behind in 3rd, was given an "interesting" ride in a handicap at Fairyhouse, Automated was behind him there and won next time out, he runs in the Coral Cup as does the fortunate winner of the race Waxies Dargle

the horse he beat last time ran Cilaos Emery ran 5th in the Supreme there as well and Mick Jazz looks the type who is going to be suited ideally to a strongly run race on decent ground, a couple of similar bridle types from Ireland have won the race in the last few years, Wicklow Brave and Ted Veale and he has a nice weight at 10-11

I backed him at 14/1 last week but obviously wasnt expecting his form to be so well franked, still 10/1 just now but think when people start looking the night before and on the day seeing the form with Labaik, hes going to end up a fair bit shorter

but thats the point... clearly handicapped unfairly - I would have expected him on a slightly higher mark than what he was allotted.. if you take MODUS and TOMBSTONE marks based on what they have achieved and who they have beat says it all...

from a handicapping point of view - Jezki's face value form is not the way it works, Tombstone should be joint top weight based on that performance... and its not very fair for other connections in the race... if Phil Smith handing out perks to keep in favour of owners.

All this colonial wrangling stuff is unnecessary and boring. Lets get a knowledgable Yank in to look at the issue and help us sort a level playing field out for the future.(something similar worked quite well in the real world iirc).

The Jezki Tombstone form (navan & gowran) is not worth a f**k - tombstone ran to 0r151 to bt Jezki
Tombstone will need to improve for the drying ground

B.J. Cooper, the rider of TOMBSTONE (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding was never travelling. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities but he found that TOMBSTONE (IRE) had lost its left hind shoe.
