Sovereign Debt was our last runner from Tall Trees, as due to financial problems we have had to cease training.

He will be sadly missed, a great man with young fillies. There was no one better to get one ready.

Dandy Nicholls the ' Sprint King'
Sad to see such a decline.

Always remember him winning on Soba in the 1982 Stewards Cup. Listened to the race in a telephone box whilst on holiday in Skegness !

As a trainer could always be relied upon to produce some good priced winners in top Handicaps.
Goodwood was often a prosperous hunting ground.

Nicholls calls time on training career
By Andrew Dietz 9:17PM 8 MAR 2017

DAVID NICHOLLS, dubbed the 'Sprint king' after winning nearly every major Group 1 sprint, has announced he is to quit training with immediate effect.

Nicholls, who partnered more than 400 winners as a jockey, took up training in 1992 and won the July Cup, Nunthorpe and Prix de l'Abbaye.

Continent and Regal Parade struck twice at Group 1 level for the trainer, while the likes of Bahamian Pirate, Moss Vale and Tax Free helped him dominate the sprinting scene for years.

Nicholls, who endured a lean spell in recent seasons, faces a trial in the summer on two charges of sexual assault relating to incidents at his Tall Trees yard in Sessay, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

His final runner was a winner as stable star Sovereign Debt landed a valuable race in Doha last month.

Nicholls, 60, tweeted on Wednesday night: "Sovereign Debt was our last runner from Tall Trees as due to financial problems we have had to cease training.

"It was nice to go out on a high during what has been a difficult time and I'd like to thank all our owners that have supported us."

Former champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa tweeted: "So sad to hear that Dandy Nicholls has had to give up training. #toptrainer #sprintking."

Remember him when he started with Bastiman, all the lads (4 or 5 of them) used to come in the local pub most nights and with my interest in racing I use to have a chat with them,he was the one with a bit of a chip on the shoulder etc, probably helped him succeed no doubt.Bastiman used to send plenty of his fancied ones to Yarmouth and remember him beating Lester in a photo finish there as a young apprentice, think it was called Ruddy Drake (maybe 33/1?)and owned by Reg Spencer of Night Nurse fame.
A good friend of mine had a few with him including organising the syndicate who had Flak Jacket which they had a lot of fun with but my pal always maintained that despite appearing to be a shrewdie in his opinion he was far from it.

was a really good target trainer in his pomp but the recent bad publicity must have hurt the business as well as the rise of competing stables, particularly o'meara - never rated trotter as a jockey so won't miss him but didn't know he'd already retired

blimey - screaming from beneaththewaves

Normally when you look back on events - you fall short by a few years - or a good few years, the older you get ... But in this instance, I would have guessed at thirty years, or so.

Poor Will Pearce - only a few days afterwards - and still something of a mystery - to all except insiders, perhaps.

Maybe he didn't get as much as he needed out of it.

Agree, almost certainly Chapman was a big influence on him, Chapman's record of success with his sprinters was amazing, and Nicholls obviously learnt a lot from him. Always remember SOBA especially, and CHAPLINS CLUB.

I have seen him in the owners bar at Southwell a few times, they stocked a white wine for him which they would not serve to anyone else. He drank it like beer too.

Difficult times for a lot of yards now due to the appalling level of prize money, there must be a lot like him tottering on the brick.

Wish him well in his retirement.

I'll always remember him for giving a charity bet on one his fancied runners - only to see it run like a joke..as another he trained(25/1 "outsider") romped the race! Crooked to the core. And its good riddance to his Mickey Mouse operation.

I remember a big gamble I think goodwood or Epsom n connerton up backed from 20/1 to around 2/1 almighty gamble pulled off
Things change one of the old breed of trainers i didn't back his or avoided races he was involved in so was never disappointed and saved a fortune doing so

It's peoples attitude towards the alleged assaults which I find sickening Dealer.
We'll let the courts decide but this isn't something unheard of in racing just the majority never go forward as they fear for their future in racing.
