My thoughts too. Quite a risky proposition to take a short price on a jockey that has been winnerless for 317 days and only had 34 mounts in that period

I am afraid - though it is possible the horse may have "bounced" following its Boxing Day win or maybe today's race came too soon - but nevertheless, I would be inclined to blame trainer error for that loss. If your horse has a reasonable enough chance of winning a race and the best jockey you can reach for is Mattie Batchelor, then you haven't done your job properly.

Conditional jockey K Edgar rode a great race to win on it last time out at Fontwell and was presumably available to ride it again at Plumpton although, for reasons unknown to anyone other than the owner and trainer, Mattie got the call and Edgar was booked to ride the stable's apparent string in the same race which was then declared a non runner.
The trainer is one of the worst in the business but you'd expect to want a winner at his local track.

Mattie is Champion Jockey of the Channel Islands (as at Sept 2016) ... 40 rides ... 11 wins (27.5%), 10 2nds, 2 3rds ... (32.5% placed) ... a record any jockey would be proud of.
And if you haven't already guessed ... "How much does he have in his off-shore bank account?" ... a lot more than most of you ...
He may come over to the racing public as a bit of a fall guy, an image he promotes with all his "cheeky chappie" antics, but below the skin there is a very nice man, with a very shrewd brain for one so small.
Always remember the story, told in our local pub, of when he got his first Jag., he kept getting pulled over because the police thought it was a kid driving it .... only driver to need a booster seat ...

Jersey season is quite short and ends in August or September. Champion jockey of Jersey is a bit like boasting of winning a tallest midget contest.
Mattie comes across as being quite a character and lest we forget he was aboard when Coneygree first started to show his future potential.

Crikey! Now that is a telling statistic if ever there was one.
ps: I would however wish to make it clear I am not inferring Mattie Batchelor is a bent or crooked jockey - in sharp contrast to the other element pertaining to the statistic - he is simply not a very good jockey.
