Why don't the Racing Post have handicap ratings for French horses?
Is their system way different to the UK?
Is there a site that shows results with handicap ratings for French Racing that we can compare with UK Ratings?
Was on Paris-Turf and couldn't see much there! TIA. Happy

Cheers John. I have Google translate page on it and all, still couldn't figure it out!
Maybe onlooker has come across this in his handicapping studies?
He seems to be an expert on handicap ratings. Grin

Yes I have been trying for 8 years, have found one or two, but no official list, you have to divide by 2 and a bit when you find one9or something like that?) not sure you gotta pay, what a fecking mess of a site.

Looks like a great starting point!
Thanks to koikeeper for clearing the mystery up!
I think the French ones are in kilos so multiply by 2.21 seems to look close.
Do they publish new ratings weekly like the BHA?
Are these just end of year ratings?
At least now we know you can check the French results and multiply by 2.21 and you will be close to a rating.

Same questions for koikeeper if he can help?, just looked at individual horse search but no rating attached where I looked anyway?

Think what we are looking for is a results page like the Racing Post with the French kilo ratings beside the horses name.
Maybe France Galop have this somewhere.

Okay I'll pick a race and see if we can find this horse's handicap rating on the day.
22nd November 2016 at Chantilly on the sand. Race 6 a handicap won by Firouzeh.
Anyone can put a link up to show the result of the race and the handicap rating Firouzeh was racing off.
I have the result page from France Galop and can't seem to see it.
Here's a link.
http://www.france-galop.com/fr/course/detail/2016/P/MlRzSFlWY0VKTzRLVzF0RDdxTzc3QT09

and here's a link for his career.

Okay I'm looking at Kingspone.
Can't see a rating.
Is it that number under values (350) for the Chantilly race?
By:
Roger De Bris
When: 30 Dec 16 13:06
So Firouzeh got a 395 rating and Kingspone got a 350 for that Chantilly race.
How do we make sense of that if one of them showed up in a handicap here?
By:
koikeeper
When: 30 Dec 16 13:07
yes, as far as I know, they seem to get/publish one at the end of the year lol

If I may assist - when you look at the page on France Galop that gives you one line for each race the horse has oontested, what you see under 'Valeurs' on the far right, is the rating allocated to the horse AFTER the race shown on that line.

So for Firouzeh, her handicap mark was raised to 395 after she'd won that handicap on Nov 22nd. The mark she ran off in that handicap is always the number shown under Valeurs for the previous race - in this case 365. And 365 was the revised mark after she'd run in the Nov 1st handicap off 370.

Unlike in the UK, there is no weekly updating - all revised handicap marks are published on France Galop within three days of a race, usually it only takes two days. The other major difference is that no horse is ever raised for being beaten in a handicap, not even if you finish second in a photo.

For comparing the Franch values with those in the UK, I find it easiest just to remember that 300 = 66, 350 = 77, 400 = 88 and 450 = 99. That gives you a pretty good idea of the class of horse you're looking at.

Over jumps 500 = 110, 550 = 121, 600 = 132, 650 = 143 and so on.

If Alan Potts isn't forumite of the year I don't know who is.
Thank you Alan for your help on this matter, maybe now more UK punters can enjoy French Racing a bit more with this data.
You were always a part of my youth growing up as a punter and it's great to hear from you.
I sit here with my copy of Against The Crowd and I salute you.
Many thanks kind sir.Happy

Just to add, that as mentioned above, the official ratings are not shown on the results provided on France Galop. But they are available on the entries/declarations which will appear on the Races page. That gives you a list of meetings, click on a meeting to get a list of races and click on a race to get a list of entries/declarations and on that page, even for non handicap ratings, you will find the current rating.

Bear in mind that handicap marks are not the fetish they are in the UK, as there are only a limited number of handicaps and a horse can have a perfectly good career without ever running in a handicap. There will be plenty of horses in those entry lists that have no mark, because they've never been allocated one.
