Anybody able to assist with a few clues in relation to questions 5,22, and 38. Am willing to assist with any of the other questions as a trade if needed. Many thanks.
Hi, Delta. Your answers do not relate to the questions I have mentioned. I have no idea how charlie Poste or Ryan Moore are linked to the questions in the quiz.

Sorry guys been puzzling over this for the last hour but cannot see any link between your reply and any of the questions I have the problem with. Probably a stupid question but are you looking at this years questions.

I assume that this relates to the fact that I do not use the forum enough for people to want to assist me. If this is the meaning of the reply then perhaps this shows why I do not post on the site very often. Perhaps I have other intrests other than sitting at a computer all day every day. Some people have to work hard for a living and have very little spare time. But thanks for your assistance. Happy New Year to you all.

I'm stuck on 5, 16, 22, 32, 38, so it looks like I won't be winning! All I can offer you Brown Jack is a process of elimination for 22. Bernborough, Count Fleet and Alycidon were all beaten in thier first season, so if the inference in the question is that the horse in ther answer was unbeaten for ages until finally getting beaten by Fanfan then it's probably Marsyas. I have no idea how to find the answers to 5, 32 and 38. For 16 I have checked the winners of every Cheltenham festival race since 1960 and not found any of those jockeys. Good luck mate.

Archie Babe's I believe they were being sarcastic because I make very few posts on the site. Indicating I need to make more posts (Moore Poste). At least there are some people who are trying to help. My thanks go to them and I hope they have a better new year than some others on here.

Oh yeah. How witty. I'm hardly ever on here either. There are two things bugging me about this year's quiz: the aforementioned absence of any of those jockeys from Cheltenham's roll of honour (what am I missing - a charity race? Any pointers?) and that for Q22 according to a pedigree site that seems to list every thoroughbred ever born there was no horse called Fanfan that was a contemporary of any of the answers.

Archie Babe's Q16 try looking at D. Q5 I am probably guessing at that. Q22 Toss up between A and B, as for various reasons I have eliminated the other 2. Q32 Try looking at somebody connected to one of the top northern courses. Q38 eliminate C. Try looking at a race early in the year at the Curragh. Hope this of some assistance.

Thanks, that's good of you. I'd got 32 down to C or D. I don't think 22 can be B as the horse won his first race on a disqualification and lost his second, so I hope that helps back! I've eliminated D for 38. As for 5 - I'm off to Waterstones! Or looking at all covers on Amazon. Fun and games. Again, good luck to you.

jamila14 Sorry about the delay. The questions with choice of answers are as follows. Which horse won a race depicted on the dust jacket of a dick francis novel. Bell-Tent,Sacrilege,Last Fandango,No Bombs. Fanfan was the first horse to beat which great champion. Marsyas,Bernborough,Alycidon(already eliminated the other choice) Think I've now got the other 48. If you don't know thats fine but thanks for offering.

Hi BJ - I can tell you that the Dick Francis dust jacket in question is the one for Twice Shy. Knowing that ought to help you identify the horse by process of elimination.

I've only found Fanfans in 1875, 1949 (Brazil), 1971, 1979, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1992, 2007, none of which tally with the yewarsn of the horses in question. If there was one in 1940 that must be the one. That makes my previouys deduction unsafe! Puts one of the others in the picture.

And Omerts - thanks. But Twice Shy was published in 1981 so I donlt see how it knocks out any of them (except I can find no reference to a horse called Bell-tent). AAaarghh.

Interested to know how you have eliminated the 4th option - COUNT FLEET
He raced in AMERICA in 1943 (as a 2yo) and 1944 only - being beaten several times as a 2-yr-old 0- before first winning - and then winning the Triple Crown the next season.
BERNBOROUGH was an AUSTRALIAN horse - who raced from 1941 (in Queensland)(as a 2yo) until 1946. latterly at Metropolitan tracks.
ALYCIDON was an ENGLISH horse - who raced from 1947 (as a 2yo - beaten both outings) until 1949 - and Champion Stayer
MARSYAS was a FRENCH horse - who raced as a 3yo in 1943 until 1947 - and was Champion Stayer in that period
-----------------------
Although BERNBOROUGH won many races - he did not win what would constitute, "great champion" races - such as the Melbourne Cup, for instance
ALYCIDON was 'Champion Stayer' - But I cannot find a horse called FANFAN in 'Best Horses of 1947' who would have raced in England (in 1947 when ALYCIDON was beaten as a 2yo)
ALYCIDON was 'left at the start' (Tape start) on his 3yo reappearance - However, neither can I find a FANFAN listed in 'Racehorses of 1948'.
As the OP - BROWN JACK - has, "(already eliminated the other choice)" - for whatever reason - that leaves us with ...
MARSYAS - as the most likely choice.
Given that he also was an 'out and out stayer' - MARSYAS would be highly unlikely to have been a precocious younger horse - and thus beaten in an early career race.
As FANFAN has a more French connotation name than that of the countries of breeding of the other options, I feel that MARSYAS would be Favourite on a market on this on here.

Do a google image search, and you'll be able to narrow it down! If you're still stuck, I'll give you more help, but you need to do some legwork!
I don't have any old form books or anything, I'm completely reliant in my Google-sleuth skills - but I think I've identified the race. Thanks Omerta. Still got a few to get, so not up with BJ! Good fun though.

BJ, I hate to say it but the report says that "Count Fleet bumped a colt named Vacuum Cleaner and finished a beaten second" - the collision happened at the start of the race. It doesn't say that Vacuum Cleaner was the horse that beat him.

Thanks Headmaster, yes I found that this afternoon too, was going to helpfully post. Still bothered about the Grand National winning jockey to win at Cheltenham Festival. Bob Champion, Maurice Barnes, Eddie Harty or Tim Norman. Can't find results for Spa Hurdle between 1946 and 1967 plus 1971, United Hunts Challeneg Cup (1923-73), Seven Springs Handicap Chase, Birdlip Hurdle, Aldsworth Hurdle, and Geroge Duller Handicap Hurdle. The answer will be in there!

Hi guys! Seems I'm struggling on the same questions as you! :-(
Was wondering if any of you have any further thoughts apropos [5], the horse winning the race on the front of the Dick Francis novel.
As far as I can ascertain, Last Fandango carried Robert Sangster's colours, so it isn't him, while No Bombs ran in the pink and green checks, with pink sleeves and cap, of Mrs Stanhope Joel's Snailwell Stud.
That leaves us with Bell-Tent and Sacrilege. I can't find any record at all of the former so am wondering if, perhaps, it's a fictional horse from the novel in question, meaning the answer must be Sacrilege. Unfortunately, I can't find any details of Sacrilege's racing record, less still his ownership, so am unable to be 100 per cent sure about this. Can anyone assist?!

Like others, aside from the horse depicted on the front of the Dick Francis novel am also struggling with the following:
Name the only one of these Grand National winning jockeys to ride a winner at the Cheltenham Festival. [A] Bob Champion; [b] Maurice Barnes; [C] Eddie Harty; {D] Tim Norman.
Again, any help / pointers would be much appreciated.

Bell-Tent definitely a real horse, as lead on says, trained by Bill Wightman in the mid-late '70s. The Cheltenham Festival race mentioned was the forerunner to the Coral Golden Hurdle (Pertemps) if that helps.

You will still have to take your chance, though, as -
BELL-TENT ran 3 times at Epsom -
Twice finishing second at the August Bank Holiday Monday meeting in 1979 and 1980
BELL-TENT did win the race before SHIRLEY HEIGHT'S DERBY in 1978.
However -
SACRILEGE won that same race before HENBIT's DERBY in 1980 - when trained by Peter Walwyn. ---------
I could give you the Owners and their colours - But I doubt that fellow Quiz competition entrant blackbarn would be too pleased if I did.

Anyone happier to assist now that the deadline has passed? The Dick Francis horse could have been one of three, but I'm pretty sure it's Sacrilege as the silks don't match for Last Fandango (Tony Shead rather than Robert Sangster as someone suggested) or Bell-Tent, who was also owned by Bill Wightman and raced in light blue with a white hoop.

However, further to Omerta's post, Last Fandango definitely carried the Sangster silks in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot in 1981:

Wasn't entirely certain about [22], which great horse was first beaten by Fanfan, though Marsyas seemed most likely to be correct; ditto which race Cameron won the inaugural running of.

Cameron won the 1941 Irish Lincoln under Anthony Barrett. Still guessing Marsyas for the Fanfan question, especially if the foaling date of 1940 is correct. Alycidon was well beaten twice as a juvenile,so bit unfair to ask the first horse to beat him. Last Fandango was owned by Tony Shead (who also had and Tap On Wood) when winning at Epsom in 1980, but moved to Vincent O'Brien the following year when sporting the Sangster colours. I could only deduce the big race winner in "Derby Day" to be Starry Knight (not Starry Night as per the question) based on a still from the movie showing a bookie's board.

I was surprised quite how difficult it was to find the winner of the big race in Derby Day; when I first glanced at the questions, I thought that would be one of the easier ones to find the answer to.
Like you, I eventually came across a still containing the bookie's board – though I must admit I didn't notice the different spelling. In the photo I saw you couldn't see the board in its entirety, but not being able to see any of the other three possibilities on there, I also opted for Starry Knight / Starry Night.
