Finished up my job a little while back, so I am looking at options. Always been interested in horse racing so was thinking of trying my hand at in-running.

I read the recent RP article about on-track traders paying £150 per day for LIVE pix in a hospitality suite, but this coupled with the life on the road attending hundreds of race meetings each year hardly makes for an ideal lifestyle. They'd need to be clearing £1500+/week just to cover expenses. Are these on-track traders draining all the cash out of these markets? Or is it possible to find sufficient opportunities while playing from home to make it pay?

Any advice offered is most welcome... I'm probably stooopid enough to go ahead and try my hand anyway, but at least I would be going in with my eyes wide open.

Also any pointers on the tools to be useful.. I am testing both BetAngel & Gruss. Just finding my feet with these, but I imagine they will be quite good once I get to terms with them. Unless anyone can suggest a better option?

With regard to feeds, the options available are:
- Betfair Live Video
- Live Video from any other bookmaker
- Racing UK tv or live feed
- ATR
- Turf TV
- SIS
Any suggestions which works best?

I can't imagine anyone here will give you an answer that's of any use to you.

Those who know the answer are already making money IR and why would they want to help someone else to take a share of their winnings?

I guess i'll just have to pay my dues... and keep the stakes small.

It's interesting that an article pointing out how disadvantaged you would be by playing at home should make you want to give it a go.

That's not to say that it cannot be done, but boy is it hard to turn a profit compared to how it used to be.

ATR day not a good one to start
Report Goodfella December 12, 2016 12:31 PM GMT
@stridingedge: Why ATR day not a good one to start?

Are Betfair Live pics more delayed on ATR courses than they are on RacingUK courses? Or is that only for tv pics?
Report stridingedge December 12, 2016 12:37 PM GMT
I was thinking off the tv, I don't know what the facts and figs are for betfair live with atr v ruk.

It's a common theme on here so no doubt someone will help you out with that one.

The earlier you play a race the better though.

Report pablo-fanque December 12, 2016 12:55 PM GMT
use gruss and learn all its features and then set it up to how YOU play

use betfair live video for ATR tracks unless you can get a quicker feed

use RUK on sky

try and learn the markets

good luck

Teambot betfair??? Surely betfair don't bot these markets? I'd be shocked - although it would explain pic delays :)

Are you referring to traders botting in-running markets?

Report mouse muldoon December 12, 2016 1:29 PM GMT
You can use gruss and excel to create a simple bot.
But then someone will come along and copy your bot but apply it without the delay.
Report Goodfella December 12, 2016 1:42 PM GMT
ok, that makes sense. Betfair need to remain completely independent.

IR.... what can you possibly see that others cant??

If marginal seconds on pictures is the only way then whats the point??

Surely just throw yerself into the form book and do the daily grind etc..

IR has no appeal to me cos grinding out tiny profit aint fun

jonjon, it all depends on how play.

If you're backing as they're about to cross the line, then yes you've got little chance.

But not everyone plays that way.
Report roida December 12, 2016 4:59 PM GMT
goodfellas..

if you capable of playing in running before 2-3f out,ie horses running styles, hard pullers etc then you've every chance of making a profit if you're clued up enough...last 2-3F is a massive no no away from track..dont even try.
ruk & live video are your only options.
you are now a goldfish in a swimming pool of great whites.
gl..you'll need it.

Report roadrunner46 December 12, 2016 6:30 PM GMT
waste of time betting IR, leave it to the great whites, more satisfying, relaxing and rewarding reading the form book everyday,
you pick your bets and win or lose on the day, you never end up chasing your losses. with reading the form book you have a built
in discipline if practised everyday, once you have decided on your bets for the day, thats it you dont play the other races.
once you start learning the prices relative to the horses chances, your edge will be your knowledge of the form book, the more
you know, the more informed you will be, the last part will be how you interpret the form on offer. goodluck

Whatever u play,u need a racing bank and a decision on how much profit u want to make,
as for the form book,i have seen punters confused too many times on reversal of form

A couple of years trying this, personally, didn't turnover as much profit,
as setting a target for the day and stopping when you hit it.
Plus life is far more enjoyable, when you're not sat there looking for IR pointers in the 9:05pm at Dundalk

Report pablo-fanque December 12, 2016 7:37 PM GMT
poppy , if I fancied one in the 9.05 at Dundalk , I would still back it regardless of what had occurred during the day profit or loss wise , as I think my profit or loss should not influence the fact that when I looked at what I will be betting on in the morning has or will change due to what I have won or loss the previous few hours .
Report pablo-fanque December 12, 2016 7:41 PM GMT
T-F thanks . I just use gruss with RUK on sky or betfair video for ATR .

Dear Goodfella, the in running market isn't dead. I have made a steady profit for the last four years playing Betfair Live Video (on ATR/SIS races) and RUK on Sky. I use Bet Angel but I know most of the other serious IR traders prefer Gruss. It's tough and you will have periods when you flatline or make very little profit but if you keep your discipline and learn to read a race and how and when to execute both sides of a trade you can definitely make money - in my case I make a decent living. I know other traders who have been making a steady income for the best part of ten years. I'll grant you there isn't as much liquidity as a few years back but there's still plenty of opportunities. Good luck and keep us updated with your progress. The more players and liquidity in the market the better as far as I'm concerned.
