how many horses do you guess would be in training in the uk? a topic that came up over a pint.. the numbers where wildly different

I doubt there is a correct answer.
About 20% of 2-y-os listed at Newmarket in Horser in Training 2004 never saw a racecourse and I checked a representative sample for 5 years. Others have long-term injuries and may or may not come back. You can of course count the number of individual runners in GB over a year which might be more realistic.
