So long ago that I can't remember but my first winner was Sundew in 1957. The ones I really wanted to win in other years were Wyndburgh and Freddie for Ken Oliver and of course Crisp. How I hated Red Rum:-)

Yes Fred Winter rode Sundew and I was 22 and had been married for almost a year. Something I have said here before. The race was on a Friday then and we had listened to it on a radio at work. There had been a board meeting that day and when one of the directors came downstairs he asked me who had won. I said Sundew and he asked if I had backed it. When I said yes he said that he had been on it as well. His name was Denman! I think that the winnings went towards paying off the HP on our three piece suite. My wife had picked the most expensive one in the shop at £106. The salesman smiled and said that you have picked a big spender there. It moved to several houses around the country with us and I gave it with some other furniture to the couple we sold a house to in 1993 when I retired. Perhaps he still has it.

One whose name amused me was Shelia's Cottage (50/1 in 1947)and some of my uncles backed it perhaps for the wrong reason. During the Edinburgh Festival there was an old bus that had been converted into mobile toilets and parked in under the Castle in Johnston Terrace for the use of people going to the Tattoo. Painted on its side was Shelia's Cottage. Lovely Cottage also ran unplaced in the race that year.

Sparrow. you could have a good night out for a pound. It was 2/3d. For an evening return on the Tube from Wimbledon to anywhere in London. I think that the top price for local cinemas was 2/9d and theatres about twice that. Speedway and Ice Hockey at Wembley was 2/6d. I remember going to the London Palladium on spec to see Nat King Cole and not going in as they only had the top priced seats at £2. London to Edinburgh was £5 return on the train or £3 by bus. I can't remember how much it cost to see Chelsea in those days nut I remember being there in 1954 when Royal Tan won the National and in listening to the race there on my Tranny in 1967 when Foinavon won. Around then they used to have Stand By tickets on flights and late night and weekends it was £3 single to Edinburgh with half price for children.

Nicholas Siver half a crown @ 28/1-I was 15yrs old a neighbour put it on for me - I ran down the road to Civic Radio a local TV rental shop - watched the race through the shop window - no sound but couldn't mistake Nicholas grey/white - I was jumping up and down on the pavement with people in the shop thinking I was having a fit - that was the day I began a lifelong pursuite of 'The Glorious Uncertainty of the Turf' - Good Luck to all today!

6d e/w Highland Wedding in 1967. Backed it 3 years running, so my first winning bet was when it won in '69. As I was 11, I have no idea if my father gave me the correct winnings, mind

When I was 7, my parents gave me the paper and a pin which I stuck on Anglo. They put 6d on each way for me. Untold riches for me - over £1 10 shillings.
