Think it was MR SNUGIT he backed and I think he owned it Blue and White hoops with White sleeves. Think it finished fourth. He lost Millions and Millions so the Bookies knew they would get it back anyway. Probably on the next race if it had won.

Led at the Elbow, on the Run-In - then past by Last Suspect - - who only ran because Last Suspects' owner's (Anne, Duchess of Westminster's - also the owner of Arkle) other, more fancied horse, got injured and could not run.
She, and her trainer, the ever pessimistic Tim Forster, did not want to run Last Suspect, as they thought it had little chance of staying, let alone win - but the jockey persuaded them to run, as he did not have a mount.
Mr Snugfit was the last bet that I ever had on the Grand National - never again, for me, after that heartbreak. - and like Ramsden, I had been backing it at all odds downwards since January - not for £ hundreds of thousands, of course ... but enough for it to hurt - and my consequent vow.
As you can see - Ramsden, and myself, were very unlucky that day.

Stearsby was a fine staying chaser for Pitman that won me a tidy some one day as part of a double.
Ramsden won a fortune when Katies won.
as has been said, his life has been a rollercoaster.
Bet he would change little.

rumour has it that he had 50 grand on Katies at 20s when the horse won the 1984 Irish 1000 Guineas
the 80s were the time to be alive.
great days when ordinary folk started to earn some proper money.

this is going to sound harsh, but it is the unemployed, the disabled and the EU national who are having their pockets picked by the tories.
The tories always make sure that enough folk are doing very well in life to not care about the have nots.
as long as most of us get the same chance when we are born, then i am all for us living and dying by our own decisions.
I get more right wing the older i get.

Yes, as said, it was £50k ew, Mr Snugfit, I think. But he was betting five-figures every ten-minutes. Huge profit for Ladbrokes. Terry Ramsden's stable jockey was Ray Cochrane.

The F*** the Arabs story appeared in the Sporting Life column of Private Eye at the time, so it must be true.
As Carrot1960 says, the bet was reported as £50,000 ew Mr Snugfit at the time.
The luckiest bookmaker alive must have been Andy Geraghty, who not only had Ramsden as a punter, but actually got paid too.
Ladbrokes weren't so lucky. He knocked them for fortunes, then went bleating to the press when they wouldn't pay him the return on a cash yankee he'd had in one of their shops.

I remember reading somewhere Tel said he could handle the 57mill he owed the books, but what he couldn't handle was the banks withdrawing his half a bill credit overnight.
p.s. what happened to his minder Wayne, what a bundle of muscle he was.

A little story to tell about Michael that I have put on another thread, he was in the office taking a telephone bet from a massive punter (a stockbroker with long hair who came from Enfield and who liked a good bet)this punter was doing his brains in on the afternoon and evening racing, the last race finished at Ripon at 9pm and the firm had had a good day and were doing the accounts ready to go home when the phone rang and this punter wanted another bet he was told the racing had finished and he said no there's the 9.20 at Wimbledon dogs and he asked for a bet the size of the national debt, all the staff sat in silence as the bet was laid and the dog got beat, as the lady sang those were the days my friends,
screaming was it Michael rather than AndyA little story to tell about Michael that I have put on another thread, he was in the office taking a telephone bet from a massive punter (a stockbroker with long hair who came from Enfield and who liked a goo
"Ladbrokes weren't so lucky. He knocked them for fortunes, then went bleating to the press when they wouldn't pay him the return on a cash yankee he'd had in one of their shops." Paul, When I worked for the rancid firm I was given the task of telling him he wasn't getting paid, not only was he not getting paid, he couldn't have a bet against his winnings. Fortunately for me he didn't turn up to collect. He was punting in cash because his credit had been stopped, but they would still lay him crazy bets. He was punting over a monkey in forecasts and tricasts on each dog race while he was sorting out his horse bets for the afternoon.

Sorry, ronnie rails, you're right. It was Michael Geraghty of course. A long time ago now - another world.
Remember Wayne the Australian art dealer who used to pop up occasionally at that time, using all sorts of front men to lay bets for him? There was one afternoon at Plumpton when Terry Barfoot laid a £50,000 to £40,000 on his behalf about the fav in an amateur riders chase. What days!

bookies were full most afternoons as every left the "office" and spent an hour or so in there.
And if you wanted 2 grand on at 4s, yes they phoned it through, but more often than not it was taken at the requested odds.

What about that other guy who started from broke and won millions from gambling? He didn't piss it away, he invested it wisely and created billions. He became a Gold Cup and Grand National winner and became National Hunt's biggest owner. He paid the most successful jockey in history to ride for him. He built the biggest house in Ireland and built a £100m home in Barbados. He held a large share in Man Utd. Turn on racing tomorrow and you'll see his colours. You will most days. By all accounts he still wins millions through gambling. A filing to a US court last year gave us a rare insight - it revealed he had gambling winnings of $17.4m in America in 2012. He used to have the title 'gambler' beside his name in the rich list.
He didn't do badly either.

Tonight I wanted £2k on on tomorrow's racing. Called Bet365 - waited whilst they referred to traders - you can have £500. Do you want me to put that on for you sir? No thanks, I'll go elsewhere - would rather put it all on at worse odds with someone who will actually take a bet. So went to Ladbrokes - is it best odds guaranteed on the phone? No sir, only online. So I hang up and try to place it online to find out they won't take £2k, just £1,818.
Waste of space the majority of them.

Pjay- yes another legend who is probably the greatest legend in the last 40 years, be plenty of threads brought up of him long after I leave this planet. First time I saw him was about 15 years ago at cheltenham festival, said hi to him and got to say was the most humble man I've ever met who was a hero of mine, had time for a numpty like me and chatted for 5 mins when he could of just walked off! Legend to the max.

Ramsden would still be going if he kept to what he did best....reading the markets. Sadly he got into horseracing and blew the lot.
He had a nice wife until he went bankrupt wherein his wife left him for his best mate.(apparently)
Moral of the story??? Stick to do what you know best..

__________________________________________________________________________________ Ramsden made his fortune transforming investment firm Glen International. At his peak the bond trader, who left school at 16, reportedly owned two helicopters, a Gulfstream jet, 27 cars, a dozen houses, 120 racehorses, a 30 per cent share of Chelsea Football Club and the whole of Walsall FC. But when the Japanese market collapsed in 1987, so did Glen International and Ramsden's fortune. Ladbrokes alone was owed £58m. The fall was swift and spectacular - Glen International is said to have sustained losses of £147m in a catastrophic 41-day period. Having failed to save Glen International, Ramsden fled to the US. He later spent six months in prison in Los Angeles fighting extradition after being arrested at the request of the Serious Fraud Office. Declared bankrupt in 1992 with debts of £100m he was given a two-year suspended sentence for fraud. He was jailed in 1998 for concealing money from creditors which he used to buy a house for his estranged wife and son.
