Not necessarily at the same meeting!

Can't think of any off the top of my head. Am I missing something obvious? Denman had two wins (RSA Ch, GC) and a 2nd (RSA Hdl.) Cue Card has two wins (Bumper, Ryanair) and a 2nd (Arkle) and could obviously go on and win the Gold Cup (c'mon Don Cossack!!) I can't come up with any better than that, though I'm sure other horses which escape me can match that, at least. Prepared to be embarrassed at my shameful lack of knowledge here.

Quiz question chaps - Which horse with a link to a horse mentioned on this thread, won a festival novice hurdle, and returned six years later to fail as a short priced favourite, in a festival novice chase ?
Report ged February 18, 2016 6:13 PM GMT
Quita Que was one of Tom Dreaper's less well known horses (at least, he's generally forgotten now), but in a run of 4 years, he was 2nd in 2 Champion Hurdles (the first time by 3/4 length), then won a Cathcart by a distance, then won the first ever Champion Chase (at 4/9), then would have been a hot fav to win it again the following year, but got injured. His stablemate Fortria took over, and became the new 2 mile chase king.

Saffron Tartan, incidentally, was the overnight favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1959, but was withdrawn as he coughed. He then placed in the 1960 Champion Hurdle (going off 3/1 2nd fav), and then won the 1961 Gold Cup. He was a big horse, who had dodgy wind, who was hobdayed in the autumn of 1959. He also won the 1960 KG chase.

No Kavvie. Ged was correct with the great Flyingbolt - the races that are now the Supreme Novices, Arkle and Champion Chase. He famously came 3rd, to Salmon Spray, in the Champion Hurdle the day after winning the Champion Chase.

I have to say I wrote some cr&p about Quita Que above. He was trained by Dan Moore, not Tom Dreaper. I think that's twice I've got that wrong. The horse went on to win another Cathcart as a 12yo, so he had a fair old Cheltenham record altogether.

What about Silver Fame the Gold Cup winner? He had a prolific record at Cheltenham and won ten times there. Surely he must have won at least 2 Festivals. Anybody able to check him out?
Report ged February 19, 2016 10:41 AM GMT
L'Escargot's Cheltenham festival record...

1968 - Gloucestershire Hurdle (now Supreme Novices) - won
1969 - Champion Hurdle - unplaced behind Persian War
1970 - Gold Cup - won
1971 - Gold Cup - won
1972 - Gold Cup - 4th
1973 - Gold Cup - 4th
1974 - Cathcart - 2nd
1975 - Champion Chase - 7th

In the last year, he was simply using the 2 mile race as a stepping stone to the Grand National, which he won, having finished 3rd in '73, and 2nd in '74. (He also ran in the race in '72, but got put out of the race early on). He also found time to make a trip to the US and win a big chase at Belmont Park. One tough horse.
Report ged February 19, 2016 11:09 AM GMT
Silver Fame won the Seven Springs Handicap Chase in 1948.

That was a race run at the festival from 1930 to 1950. Thomond (twice 2nd to Golden Miller in the Gold Cup) also won this race.
Report ged February 19, 2016 11:15 AM GMT
Medoc II should be on the list.

He won the infamous National Hunt Juvenile Chase (for 4yos, last run in 1958) in 1938. He then won successive runnings of the aforementioned Seven Springs Chase in 1940 and 1941, and then the Gold Cup in 1942.
Report differentdrum February 19, 2016 12:07 PM GMT
Obviously, he doesn't qualify here but Clever Scot won the the equivalent of the World Hurdle and RSA which is the double More Of That is trying to achieve this year. Have any other horses achieved that double?
Report ged February 19, 2016 12:11 PM GMT
Solfen won both races in 1960.
Report ged February 19, 2016 12:20 PM GMT

Report differentdrum February 19, 2016 12:25 PM GMT
Thanks, I had forgotten about A Kinsman. Never heard of Solfen, did he go on to be a Gold Cup contender?
Report ged February 19, 2016 12:35 PM GMT
No he didn't. I don't know what happened to him. He was an 8yo when he did it. He won the novice chase on the Wednesday by 25 lengths at 5/4 fav, and won the hurdle race by a hard fought length the following day at 5/2 fav. Both races had 21 runners. He was trained by Eddie O'Grady's father Willie.
Report ged February 19, 2016 12:48 PM GMT
Another horse worth a mention....

Albergo.

1959 - won a division of the Gloucesterhire Hurdle (Supreme Novices)
1960 - ran twice - ran 2nd in the Champion Hurdle, then 2 days later won the County Hurdle under top weight of 12-5 by half a length as the 7-4 fav. (Owned by Mrs C Magnier).
Report Desmond Orchard February 19, 2016 1:45 PM GMT
Not very British, celebrating all these winners. What about a plucky loser?
Faasel, 2nd in a Triumph then seemed to finish 2nd every other year in all manner of races. He was also 2nd in a big race at Aintree if memory serves?
Report ged February 19, 2016 2:09 PM GMT
Silver Flame has to go on the list.

He also won the National Hunt Handicap Chase in 1950. The Seven Springs (which he won in 1948) morphed into the Mildmay of Flete. He carried 12-7 when winning each of those, and was 12 when he won his Gold Cup in 1951.

Dudley is another for the list. He was a star over 2 miles, once won 17 in a row, and won 3 different races at the festival...

1923 Grand Annual - under 12-7
1927 Amateur Riders Chase - under 12-7
1928 Coventry Cup (effectively, the 2 mile championship. It was its first running.) - he was 14yo
