I think the more we see of people like him the more we try to find fault. Particularly in racing when you start seeing the same people over and over it becomes annoying ala Fitzgerald. Nicholls is on the Morning Line very often, interviewed a lot etc.

he is a winner like him or not he may not be having such a good season by his own standards but he has set the bar high and will be back ...........i like his openness on most of his horses

He reminds me of Alex Ferguson from a personality perspective. He is driven to be the best and that makes his character a bit spikey.
He is having a "terrible" season and he will still be the leading English trainer - not bad really.

Wasnt aimed at you reg, just a general opinion, when someone talks about a leading trainer but uses terms that have nothing to do with their ability/personality it is rather juvenile.

because he doesnt believe in what he,s doing himself, wont let himself believe a horse hasnt performed, had a bad day etc, sends them up and down in trip , switching from hurdles to chases and back again , breathing ops, changing tactics soon as they dont win a race

Saw him in the Toat shop at Stratford a few years ago urging a rival horse to fall when clear of one his at an away meeting.
Also at Stratford, having a pop at Jimmy Frost for the ride Jimmy's daughter gave one in a hunter chase (trained by Rose Loxton (?) - a relative)
A thoroughly dislikeable person. Or maybe it's the Stratford air.

When Neptune Collonges won the National his first comments to the camera were something like "that's blown Nicky out of the water now"...regarding the Trainer's Championship.Just seemed out of place and lacking class...certainly don't miss the interviews these last few Saturdays.

I dunno I do remember being gutted when azertyuiop got turned over by Well chief at sandown in 2005 to guarantee Pipe the trainers championship Pipe was a dodgy blighter PFN seemed a breath of fresh air Running his best horses in the conditions races while Pipe was always trying to land some handicap plunge Then Nicholls got a bit grouchy over Kauto Star who I think was always a bit over rated I mean that Kempton handicap mark of 190, Best since Mill HOuse always seemed a load of old hype to me and a bit of a treat given to PFN to keep him happy Keeping all those owners happy cant be easy Maybe he wore his heart on his sleeve over Kauto the subsequent problems with Smith has probably scared a few owners off Anyway its quite impossible in this day and age to compete with Giggy and Ricci Mullins will get first crack on any decent Irish PTP horse and any thing which appears on Equidia TV Interesting to see how WPM keeps all his owners happy. He seems quite a circumspect individual not given to emotion or hyperbole Which is probably for the best as he cant be seen to be giving favour to any side. Either way Pipe, Nicholls, Mullins have all advanced their sport by their dedication and professional attitude Bet most of us wish we could say the same about our punting

You have to divorce personal views from views about his training ability. He's been a great trainer and has been at the top a long time and you have to respect that. As a person he sometimes comes across as very ungracious and prickly.

Whereas Philip Hobbs is thoroughly likeable, and loyal to his wife Sarah and Richard Johnson, Paul Nicholls has had several stable jockeys and two or three wives. He has annoyed one or two photographers and uniquely 'lost' several major owners _ Harry Findlay, Clive Smith and Jim Lewis (THREE Gold Cup winning owners). Not on particularly good terms any more with Highflyer Bloodstock and now primarily uses Tom Malone to buy his horses. I've not asked them but it would be interesting to know what Isaac Souede and Simon Munir think of him. They have horses with Nicky H, Nigel TD, David Pipe, Gordon Elliott, Alan King, WPM, Oliver Sherwood and Harry Fry but NOT Paul Nicholls.

when he started out,I don't think he could of dreamed of the success he's had
You have to dedicate your life as a trainerno trainer is the same(good/bad faults)training is never a givenwhen he started out,I don't think he could of dreamed of the success he's had
Not sure how much losing two, or even all three of those owners is that bad a thing. Must admit, met him a few times, and doesn't seem to be the most likable of people, but then sometimes people at the top of their chosen professions aren't
Was low class though how he decided to retire in the paddock straight after More of Thats world hurdle, it was like..I'm not in the limelight, and it's all about me, me, me.

It seems the people who have actually met him do not speak highly of him , that in itself is interesting to hear. Meat loaf - that's a good point about Sir Alex Ferguson. Most people couldn't stand him but he was a winner that's for sure.

Loads of people fell out with Fergie , players , rival managers , press , footy fans and even upset his own employers over the breeding rights of one of their champion Irish race horse??

The question is why is he disliked on the forum. My answer is that no one has spent any real time with him ( please forgive me those who have spent time in line for a cup of tea with him ) and forumites are extrapolating from snippets of him they see in the media.
At the end of the day he and other trainers feed horse hay and gallop them up a hill and enter them in races. who give a fcuk
